Developer Evil Empire who did lots of work on Dead Cells and made The Rogue Prince of Persia have announced they're taking over future development of Brotato.

In the Steam announcement they said the original developer Blobfish Games want to make some new games, so they're moving on. This is where Evil Empire comes in, with a plan for lots more. Evil Empire have already pushed out a first update with a new Gobbler enemy that will steal materials with another small update planned to arrive in late October.

A lot more is to come, with plans to be announced later to gain feedback from players. Basically we'll get "more content for the game, more often" but they're also "aware that too much content can bloat a roguelike, so don’t worry, we’ll be considering each addition carefully".

Some of what they want to do includes "regular updates (and betas of updates), plus we’ll also be doing other things like quality-of-life additions, various improvements and bug fixes. Maybe even a DLC".

Patch notes for the latest release:

Content

  • Added the Gobbler enemy that steals materials
  • Added the Gobbler's Hat item + its challenge to unlock it

Fixes

  • Fixed challenges being duplicated when using retry-wave
  • Fixed Burning Spread stat and Damage against bosses translation in Simplified Chinese
  • Fixed Giant Belt description in Simplified Chinese
  • Fixed German translation for the Padding item
  • Increased precision of stat gains. Getting 5 Harvesting with 80% reduced Harvesting gain now correctly results in 1 Harvesting

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather see the original developers declaring Brotato finished than handling it to another dev team. But it seems most people prefer this quasi live service model nowadays, so maybe that influenced their decision.
