News - Starship colony building sim Stardeus gets a free weekend and big sale
By Nezchan, 14 Jun 2025 at 2:59 pm UTC

This game looks interesting, but being published by Paradox Arc (a division of Paradox Interactive) is a no-go for me, taking into account what they did with the game Across the Obelisk - it started as a game published by Paradox Arc and later it got integrated with Paradox Interactive and since then the game have tons of DLCs (just like all major games under the Paradox Interactive umbrella). No biggie though, since we have lots of other great games to play nowadays.

As far as I'm aware this is a solo dev who has their hands full just getting the base game finished. So unless something radically changes I wouldn't expect much in the line of DLC at all, besides the art book and soundtrack which seem pretty innocuous.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

News - Steam Deck and SteamOS hit 20,000 playable games
By Liam Dawe, 14 Jun 2025 at 8:17 am UTC

The total amount of PC games literally cannot be counted. For Steam, 140,096 according to SteamDB.

And no, Windows actually cannot run them all, Windows does have its own compatibility problems too. Far less, but issues do still exist. Not sure why you're pointing it out though, we all know the hill Linux gaming has to climb here.

By Philadelphus, 14 Jun 2025 at 1:18 am UTC

I just hope they did not steal many ideas from Stardeus.
The spacegravship stuff in this expansion is basically making the highly-popular mod Save Our Ship 2 official (minus some things like ship-to-ship weapons and combat), and SOS 2 was around years before Stardeus released*. I doubt Tynan needed to look elsewhere for inspiration.

*Or at least the original SOS was, I don't know exactly how far it goes but I know it was a fairly early mod.

This is a great number for marketing purposes. I am always surprised at how many of my 250 Steam games just work on Manjaro. However their should be a quality rating like Great | Good | Just Okay.

News - 3DMark are planning a Linux version but no date for it yet
By Mountain Man, 13 Jun 2025 at 9:14 pm UTC

Telling Linux users to dual boot so they can benchmark their hardware in Windows is a strange suggestion. We want to benchmark our operating systems and not just the hardware. I'm not sure how someone who specializes in benchmarking software doesn't understand that.

News - Steam Beta adds controller support icons for game capsules on SteamOS
By chr, 13 Jun 2025 at 9:13 pm UTC

What are "game capsules"?
Icons in the shape of capsules communicating information about game features/status. So... game capsule icons? I guess the similar term "badges" does not get the specification badge icons, if it is clear enough from the context.

News - SteamOS massively beats Windows on the Legion Go S
By chr, 13 Jun 2025 at 8:46 pm UTC

@Pyrate
Linux has exactly the same issues as Windows & I think it's usually caused by the firmware (e.g. it got better on Lenovo ThinkPad or HP EliteBook devices after a few firmware updates). Unfortunately S3 often isn't even implemented anymore.
I don't know any of the details, I just know it doesn't happen for my laptop (Dell Inspiron i5 gen 8).

In fact, and this is another thing that came up when I was flexing on my friends; I don't believe I heard the fan noise of my laptop, not even once since I installed Linux on the thing a year ago. When it was on Windows, it would randomly spin up the fans like crazy, usually when I'm away form the computer too, like what's up with this thing ?
I'm glad you've had this experience, but it is always super easy to misjudge probabilities in case of anecdotal evidence (aka stories). In my case my Dell Latitude 5289 with Linux turns on in my backpack. And my Tuxedo Aura 15 gen1 (laptop sold with Linux) randomly spins fans like crazy every time when turning off or going to sleep. I'm pretty sure I've gotten worse battery life as well, but not sure which laptop - and ultimately not confident in these stories.

That said, I still strongly prefer Linux over Windows, because I think my digital systems should not rely on trust for an entity whose sole purpose (like for any capitalist company) is growth at any cost.

The other part is that every system that would be running Linux can right now already be tested by installing Windows dual boot

Oh yeah, the guys who wanted to test the performance of the Legion Go S could just boot Win11 to see how it performed with SteamOS... wait... wait, wasn't there something?

One of the developers shared some more info in the Steam comments.

Yes, there is going to be a Linux version. If it was ready, it would be out. It is not and it is decisively harder project than the mac version as it has far more tests and features. That is part of the reason why we tackled mac first. The other part is that every system that would be running Linux can right now already be tested by installing Windows dual boot, while Macs cannot really do that (well, you could have run iOS version, but it was decisively not optimal way to test the systems and it ran against platform vsync cap on high end macs).

I feel like some of us should bake a celebratory cake and tag @Steam and @ValveSoftware in a picture of it
But THE CAKE IS A LIE emoji

In all seriousness though, 20K games is extremely impressive emoji Remember that PS4 only had 3,500 games, and Nintendo Switch only has 6000 titles. Both consoles have existed far longer than the Steam Deck though
