Stardeus is a colony building sim set in space, where you build up your own spaceship to go off exploring and survive.

The developer just put it up for a Steam Free Weekend, so you can download and try the full game entirely free for a few days. If you decide you like it, the game is also on sale with a 50% discount until June 19th. That's the biggest discount it has had to date!

Competition is hot though, with RimWorld - Odyssey just being announced that does a very similar thing but there's still a lot of differences between them. I guess this done mean I can't call it RimWorld in space anymore then.

Stardeus is much more expansive for the space side of things because that is its focus. Stardeus also added ship to ship combat in an update released back in May.

The basics:

  • Build a Spaceship - In Stardeus you will build functional spaceships and space bases that will actually fly.
  • Establish a Colony - In addition to robotic workers that you control, there will be a human colony that you will have to take care of. Or will you?
  • Explore the Universe - Fly your spaceship and take your colony to the unknown depths of a vast procedurally generated Universe.

Stardeus | Release Date: 12th October 2022

I was attracted to Stardeus because of the original setting of post-disaster and having to pick up the pieces, but the game's really kinda left that behind in a lot of ways now.

Still, I should try it again sometime soon and check out all the new systems.

This game looks interesting, but being published by Paradox Arc (a division of Paradox Interactive) is a no-go for me, taking into account what they did with the game Across the Obelisk - it started as a game published by Paradox Arc and later it got integrated with Paradox Interactive and since then the game have tons of DLCs (just like all major games under the Paradox Interactive umbrella). No biggie though, since we have lots of other great games to play nowadays.

As far as I'm aware this is a solo dev who has their hands full just getting the base game finished. So unless something radically changes I wouldn't expect much in the line of DLC at all, besides the art book and soundtrack which seem pretty innocuous.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I really encourage Colony Sim Enthusiasts to give this one a try. The dev is really cool, you literally can watch him work every day (he streams most of it), he listens to his players, he responds very quickly and implements so much, its crazy. He has quite a knack for UI elements too, so this game works really well on the deck, despite the tiny screen. Really good one, and yes, i will buy the rimworld dlc too. Of course i will, the willingless weak minded thing i am. :)
