Stuck on unpacking game resources screen in endless loop for me but I did not try 9.0-4. version mentioned in the article, just experimental and hotfix.

News - Fedora proposal to drop 32-bit support has been withdrawn
By Cloversheen, 5 Jul 2025 at 1:23 am UTC

To put it a different way, no doubt they exist today, but if Fedora and Ubuntu were to stop having them, at what point would Flathub or whoever be saying "man, these things are a pain to maintain, we should drop them"? Why is the effort different, and who in the Flatpak world has the workforce and motivation to put it in if it's being claimed to be too hard for major Linux distributions?
Agreed, and this does not even address the elephant in the room:

Flatpak is Red Hat.
Flatpak is FreeDesktop, FreeDesktop is Red Hat.
Fedora might claim to be independent from Red Hat, but not really. In theory yes, in actuality no.

News - KDE Plasma will continue having an X11 session, as Kubuntu switches to Wayland by default
By RavenWings, 4 Jul 2025 at 7:13 pm UTC

@Brokatt: Well, on the plus side, at least I learned quite a bit about Linux right from the start this way ^^ The biggest factor in all this always was the fear of having to go back to Windows if things don´t work out. I don´t expect or need EVERYTHING to run smoothly from the start, but there is a certain amount of stuff that just has to work with no or little effort for me to feel "at home" at a OS. Since I switched to X11 I feel pretty comfortable and I love how much you can actually make Linux your home compared to Windows.

News - Proton 10.0-2 gets a small release candidate update for Linux, SteamOS / Steam Deck
By Caldathras, 4 Jul 2025 at 6:41 pm UTC

You know, it's a funny thing. Every time Wine or Proton move through to a new major version, it breaks my prefixes and the games won't launch. I have to roll back to the previous Wine/Proton version to get them running again.

There's something to be said about Liam's advice on not using Proton Experimental or System Default as your default runner setting. Stability.

@Vortex_Acherontic
If the game is on Steam, simply run it from flatpak Steam and it will keep working. If they are not on Steam, then run them via Lutris, Heroic Games Launcher, Minigalaxy, Faugus Launcher, Cartridges, Bottles the choices are endless they all have the 32bit runtimes made available to them. This way nobody needs to package said application as a flatpak.
Provided that the launchers' 32-bit runtimes are not dependent on the upstream 32-bit libraries, I think this would be a great solution.

I've already had success with both Steam's and Lutris' runtimes to get finicky native games to run. I assume this is what you're alluding to ...

News - OpenMW 0.49 arrives to enhanced Morrowind and they're looking to support later Bethesda games
By Caldathras, 4 Jul 2025 at 6:23 pm UTC

This excites me and makes me nervous at the same time. I'm always happy to see a new version of OpenMW.

The last time they did a version update (0.47 to 0.48), the launchpad PPA deleted my installation and wouldn't let me reinstall 0.47, even using the GitHub installer. That was Mint 20.3 when it was still under active support.

Now, I've got 0.48 running on Mint 21.3. Upgrading to Mint 22 resulted in OpenMW failing to run, so I fell back to Mint 21.3. If the PPA tries to upgrade to 0.49, will I face the same problem I did with 0.47 to 0.48?

When you look at the PPA files, there is literally only one file for jammy (22.04) or noble (24.04) -- the core executable and other dependencies are not listed.

I'm seriously thinking about dropping the PPA altogether and just using the GitHub installer.

Down with Gacha games.

Meanwhile, there's one thing I have been failing to understand for a couple decades now. So, once upon a time, dates were usually written with the month as a word, or an abbreviation. Like, "Oct. 12, 1972" kind of thing. But back when things first started getting computery, there was a shift to doing dates in all numbers so computers would be able to understand them, because computers were stupid like that, and primitive, and stuff. And this influenced even non-computer stuff--even in an analog form you're writing on, there's typically an assumption that you'll do it that way. But this has serious drawbacks--people aren't consistent in how they order year/month/day, different countries have tried to standardize on different orders, and dates done with just the numbers are ambiguous, leading to errors and misunderstanding. At the time, the sacrifice was probably necessary.

But for a long time now it has been perfectly possible for computers to handle things like a date format with a word in it. Like, really no problem. And the result would be more human-readable and less ambiguous. So why do we stick to doing it the stupid way?!

Woah, I thought this project was dead! emoji Glad to see it's still going strong, though I hope the VR version is just as stable with all these new features, since it's been my dream to play this game in VR.

Guide - How to get Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 online working on Linux, SteamOS, Steam Deck

I own both of these games and a Steamdeck so I might give this a swing at some point. I stopped playing FPSes after BF4 and moved into MOBAs, but my Steamdeck is usually just an emulator for my stack of SEGA and PS games and it's good to give it a workout sometimes.

News - GeForce NOW on Steam Deck really can be a game-changer
By ToddL, 4 Jul 2025 at 3:02 pm UTC

I actually like using Geforce Now for games that can't run well on the Steam Deck because of performance or anti-cheat reasons. Also, before they came out with a native app, I set it up using the steps that many website were using at the time that relied on the browser to make it work.

When I have time, I'll have to try the native app when I have time to set it up and see how much better it is compared to the setup I was using.

News - THE FINALS to get new kernel-based anti-cheat, devs say it will still work on Linux, SteamOS, Steam Deck
By ToddL, 4 Jul 2025 at 2:42 pm UTC

They just won't be using kernel-mode on Linux, same as now, because it's just not a thing.
@Liam Dawe
I hope it stays that way because the last thing any Linux/Steam Deck user wants is to get the rug pulled under them when the cheating gets overwhelming and they have to resort to using kernel anti-cheats on Linux/Steam Deck. For now, I like that they're still supportive of Linux/Steam Deck despite not officially developing for the platform.

News - Steam Hardware & Software Survey for June 2025 is out - here's the latest for Linux and SteamOS

Relative numbers are all fine and dandy.

But it's in the absolute values I find most satisfaction.

The growth from 0.75% (2018) to 2.57% (2025) should be considered also compounded with the growth from 90M MAU (2018) to 150M (2024 - can't find data for 2025).

Graphing the absolute numbers would show an even steeper growth curve.

Another thing to note and make users or possible customers aware of might be that now ALL items/keys have an expiry date beginning with this bundle (in the strong assumption that this is not a one time exclusive):

Must be redeemed by July 1st, 2026 by 10:00 AM Pacific Time.

Where previously this was only done for selected titles (probably where the publisher forced them to do) but now it appears to be their.. choice?

UOOOGHHH

I was so afraid it would have anti-cheat but thank god much like Shadowverse Worlds Beyond and Uma Musume it just works on Linux!

That's very great news. I don't need to work on the Waydroid emulator setup anymore. I can just play the game. I hope other gacha games launching on Steam follows this. I know a LOT of people are worried about their favorite gacha games on Linux, and a main blocker of their transition to Linux.

News - GeForce NOW app for Steam Deck has arrived
By Boldos, 4 Jul 2025 at 9:19 am UTC

I hope (probably forlornly) that this is the start of many such apps being better supported under Linux, simply because the SteamDeck is driving engagement. It would be amazing to see Spotify, Netflix, Prime, Paramount or Disney creating apps like this, ideally through Flathub, that provide a better Linux experience, and even better if they support the Deck's controls in gaming mode.
To pour some gasoline into the discussion... emoji
We actually DO have an official app for Spotify. For years now. As a Snap pack in Ubuntu... emoji

News - Fedora proposal to drop 32-bit support has been withdrawn
By Eike, 4 Jul 2025 at 8:12 am UTC

The problem is not how to get 32 bit libraries onto the users' systems.

That works all fine natively or in Flatpak or however.

The problem is how to get/make/maintain the libraries in the first place.

Ubuntu people said (6 years ago already!) that the environment, tools and the libs themselves are brittling.
