News - DOOM: The Dark Ages needs workarounds on Linux with AMD GPUs, a fix has been merged into Mesa
By jarhead_h, 17 May 2025 at 3:19 am UTC

Considering that it appears this installment of DOOM doubles down on all the things I didn't really like from Eternal while slowing you down and forcing a defensive playstyle, I'm really feeling better and better about making this one into a Steam Summer Sale kinda purchase. In like, five years.

Still running a 5900X/RX6800XT combo on a 4K screen. AMD claims they don't plan to do a XX80 or XX90 series GPU with RDNA4 but I frankly don't believe it. At the very least we'll get a tweaked version of the XX70 series sometime next year.

Until then I'm still slogging through Eternal's DLC and honestly it's more of a chore than it is enjoyable.

This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.
A pity it isn't. For some things, if not most, simple HTML interfaces would be perfectly sufficient, if it weren't for the "design" and of course, "telemetry".
All I'm getting is a blue butterfly, and that was that.

Your JavaScript is off, to use the BBCode options please turn it on. Commenting will still work without! :)
and thank you for that.

News - Minecraft will finally let you craft saddles instead of hunting for them
By Philadelphus, 16 May 2025 at 7:16 pm UTC

I don't play Minecraft, so this is all seeming very weird to me. "Can't craft saddles" on its own just seems like a bad oversight, and like surely there's a mod for this, right? But then it's supposed to be OK because you . . . hunt for them? So like, you stealth up to a wild saddle and put an arrow through it before it can get away? Um, sure. Can you breed them? Catch some wild saddles and domesticate them, end up with a herd of saddles in your corral?
Mostly it was a cool new thing to search for when saddles were shiny and new, but I think making them craftable is a good move. Before if you wanted saddles then you had to go search or fish for them (regardless of if you wanted to do that or not), and if you didn't care about using them but liked exploring or fishing you eventually ended with a ton of them, all useless to you. Now people who want saddles can just craft them, and explorers can get more useful raw materials. (And yes, mods that made saddles craftable and ones that introduced ways to break them down into raw materials have both existed for over a decade now.)

News - Steam Deck sales still going strong over three years later

I went with a steam deck due to the first rate Linux support, Extra features, And solid battery. Many of these Windows handhelds are on paper more powerful but lack trackpads (which should be key for desktop control), and have worse performance on battery. Seems like gaming laptop situation where they are portable but need to be chained to an outlet.

News - Denuvo will lock you out of games on Linux, SteamOS, Steam Deck if you keep changing Proton versions
By hwertz, 16 May 2025 at 6:08 pm UTC

Screw Denuvo and all digital rights restrictions (DRM) systems. That said at least it's 24 hours, I've futzed with Proton versions but I don't think 5 in 24 hours. And remember, if Denuvo breaks or they shut down server or something, you paid for this game and it's your right to have a working copy, feel free to go to the high seas for it at that point.

By Kimyrielle, 16 May 2025 at 5:15 pm UTC

Even if you add a compile option to enable/disable your Deunvo integration (like is commonly done with Debug/Release builds), and you get a performance difference, all you know is that you have a performance difference, but crucially you don't know why.

Well, if I compile the game without Denuvo and that's literally the ONLY change made, and I get a performance difference on the same machine used to test, I think it's pretty safe to say that the cause of the discrepancy is indeed related to Denuvo.

Due to the way Denuvo is integrated in the game, what I don't know is if I integrated it in the best possible way and whether or not the performance impact can be lessened by moving some of the integrity checks elsewhere.

At the end of the day, it's pretty ridiculous of some people to claim that Denuvo doesn't impact performance. It executes complex code that without using Denuvo, would not get executed. The performance impact of such systems is always greater than zero. The big question is whether or not it is noticeable enough to be a problem.

Judging by not being compatible with the older games saves nor mods, I would think those are on a new engine.

Now comes the question: are they as bugged as the originals? Because those are notorious for the amount of bugs they have.

The FAQ says no, but I am going to test a save file from the original games

News - Denuvo will lock you out of games on Linux, SteamOS, Steam Deck if you keep changing Proton versions
By Cloversheen, 16 May 2025 at 3:43 pm UTC

I know the BS Denuvo is spreading, but the latest example that comes to my mind is Jedi Survivor. It was just a terrible stutter test, totally unplayable, even on high end hardware, before they removed Denuvo.

It's the third game I personnally witness where there is a major performance/experience boost, when Denuvo is removed.
The thing is, it is not just a "Denuvo: On/Off" situation. While Denuvo is a complete product, you have to integrate it into your game. How you do that will affect the result. Even if you add a compile option to enable/disable your Deunvo integration (like is commonly done with Debug/Release builds), and you get a performance difference, all you know is that you have a performance difference, but crucially you don't know why.

They always hide this behind "other updates", but I've not seen such day an light difference, in other update contexts.
Releasing something to production is expensive and time consuming (for both developer and user), so you generally don't do it just to try one thing, and instead bunch several things into the new version.

If on the other hand there was a beta version that specifically is just to test Denuvo on/off, then that is a different matter, they are much cheaper to release and can contain just one specific fix.

(edit: for the record, I've not seen any convincing evidence that it actually works and delivers more revenue for the devs, so I don't advocate for denuvo in any context.)

@Mountain_Man

This is a common complaint, but as far as I know, it has never been conclusively proven. It's mostly just anecdotal with people seeing bad performance and blaming Denuvo because "This other game without Denuvo works just fine!" which is hardly definitive.

While this is still anecdotal, I heard people complain specifically about performance gains from using versions without denuvo on specific games (be that pirated copies which were able to remove denuvo, or official patches that removed drm altogether). Though, it may also depend on specific game and how it handles data loading from disk?

It seems when you reinstall a prefix from scratch, game drm often consider it a brand new PC so denuvo thinks your using it on multiple PC's.

It's all very backwards way of thinking and quite surprising denuvo still has this problem. I've known about it before and have hit it the issue once in the past.

Yeah, pirated copies have been shown to have slightly higher framerates. There was also the Village debacle which caused massive stuttering and fps dips, but Denuvo claimed that it had been implemented incorrectly. Whatever.

I don't boycott Denuvo-encumbered games because of framerates or inconvenience. I boycott those games for two reasons:
1. The money used to buy Denuvo is astronomical and could have gone on Developer salaries, or Q&A work instead.
2. The publisher is treating me, their customer, like a criminal that can't be trusted.

That second point is the main reason. Publishers who choose Denuvo are basically saying "we don't trust our customers". Meanwhile, the people who pirate the game (once it's cracked) HAVE A BETTER EXPERIENCE. When a grey-market item is better than the paid-for experience, you know exactly what the seller thinks of you. You're scum, to them.

And so they're scum, to me.

I think the reason for Denuvo's popularity among publishers is really that it's the first ever DRM system that's for all practical purposes undefeated.

Denuovo is regularly cracked anywhere from hours to weeks after a game launches.

But issue I always had with nucleus co-op is the audio. Since you're running two or more instances the audio basically doubles and sounds wrong
In theory you could redirect the audio output of the instances on different physical outputs of the PC and each player could listen to the correct audio with headphones?

Bit late, but I when mentioned the... let's call it intel that's been leaking from the company/group there was more than just the money angle that got widely reported. Locally, we heard complaints regarding the current (inexperienced since promoted way too fast, possibly incompetent and otherwise unpleasant to some) leadership. Yeah, they laid people off, scaled back, and started turning a profit eventually, but at least for a while another story that was making the rounds was that GOG just wasn't a nice or stable place to work at or just plain be at, and that it felt largely directionless to the people inside. That last part we could see from the outside for a number of years, IMO.

So, Alpha Protocol and Croc are basically the first clear signs of any kind of legitimate vision after those financial woes and assorted unpleasantness reports. The marketing is probably also intended as that, but I dislike it too much to call it "vision". If they want to reaffirm their mission statement (from before pulling a KFC with their brand name), this is a terrible way to approach that problem as what they're doing advertises precisely the opposite of what they think they're advertising. I won't budge on this, call me cranky all you want :)

As to the other points: I wish I had your optimism, and I hope you're right :)

It was always odd not to be able to craft saddles and often times I'd just not bother with horses in general cause of it.
It was meant as a reward in the earlier veraions but it is strange it continued on all this time till now.
I think most players just put in a cheat for it anyway if they couldnt find one, or maybe just me cause I very rarely found a saddle or a horse together for most of my play sessions, least till villagers selling items abd in turn saddles was a thing.
Guess we'll see more gold horse armor mods for avm little while tobcelebrate the change heh.

Game isnt really released till Denuvo is removed.
I'll just wait for the game and its DLC to be in a bundle for cheap then wait for Denuvo to be removed whats the rush?

Part of why I skip on Sega games Im excited for too but they dont always remove Denuvo so I wait for a steep steep discount instead then forget tbe game exists.

They lose an earlier purchase from me and Im sure they dont care so hey I dont care either, dont need to buy the game anytime soon, buh bye.

Plenty of indie boomer shooters to play anyway.

Also Doom Classic still holds up well and I do prefer it over the new Dooms, even as I play it for the epteenth thousandths time.

Try Reelism 2 mod its infinitely fun.

Not using something like ProtonDB is the right way to go for Valve. Ordinary customers want to play, not tinker.

I get what you're saying and you're not wrong... But I've seen a LOT of games where Steam claims they don't work or hasn't given them a rating, but ProtonDB rates them as working with little to no effort.

That's the sort of games I'm talking about.

The games you need to tinker with is a different story, and for that I agree it should be a separate project.
