NVIDIA might have more open drivers in future on Linux
By Ads20000, 23 March 2017 at 12:53 am UTC

Quoting: EmazzaThey might have patents implementations that they have to work around (because they have integrated them under NDA) and specific optimizations for games, basically loads of secret sauces they don't want to open yet...

Patents implementations yeah (I'm guessing relating to the graphics cards themselves and the manufacturers of those graphics cards?), but specific optimizations for games? They're not charging for these drivers are they? So why not open them (if the latter reason is the only reason), unless they're planning to charge for them in the future?

Quoting: GoldpawGood to see an initiative like this! Still, I won't personally be using it unless they reimplement ALSA-support in their browser.
Dude, it was never removed, it's just not enabled by default. It's only a compile option away.

Quoting: GoldpawI'm not going to change this, install pulseaudio or start having to enable/disable Jack every time I need to hear something in a browser. That would seriously cripple my workflow.

Pulseaudio can be run as a Jack client: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Examples#PulseAudio_through_JACK

This is kinda bloaty and stupid, but Pulseaudio is rather small on memory. Every non-Jack application will work perfectly fine this way. Jack applications still have low latency through Jack directly.

And if it works, it aint stupid. :)

Uh-oh. This may apply to me too then.

I'm curious - what FPS are you seeing?

About 12 FPS with everything on low/ultra low/off and bloom turned off and 5 FPS with bloom on. This is on a GTX 970 OC where Total War Warhammer runs fluidly so there's definitely something up with the game.

It will be good if they upgrade Tomb Raider, Life is Strange, Mad Max, Deus Ex Mankind divided and Hitman to Vulkan...

And if they port Bioshock 1 and 2 to Linux like they did with the Mac versions, and release them as separated games, I will buy them again...

Ama's Lullaby, a point & click adventure with hacking plans Linux support

Quoting: AryvandaarThere are plenty of unity games that don't have Linux support.
Right, I imagine that you still need to make some testing to see if everything works with the Linux release (maybe some devs don't want to bore with that). But for this game, it would be a shame with all the hacking/command-line stuff to have no release on Linux!

In all fairness it really shouldn't be up to a user to deal with this. We know they don't have keys that let Feral get paid. Again, this is only an external porter problem. All others are fair-game as far as I care.

First The Whispered World Special Edition, then the possibility of a few more coming to Linux. Please be Chains of Satinav, Memoria and The Night of the Rabbit. I would love to be able to enjoy those with Linux builds.

Well anyway, a Massive Thank You to all those involved in porting this. :D

Quoting: slaapliedjeI think it'd be great if laptop / desktop manufacturers could go back to the good old days of not supplying an OS with the computer, so that we could put whatever we want onto it.
They stopped doing that because Microsoft used to charge manufacturers for a Windows license even if they shipped without Windows.

It ultimately doesn't matter because it's easy enough to wipe the drive and install whatever you want.

Metal is lame being Apple only, and Apple are lame in not supporting Vulkan. That's about it.

just my 2 cents..... about the supported games by Mesa, (I have a rx460, but no long ago a 260x)
Grid Autosport, works flawlessly tested also on 260x never had any crash.(mesa 12,13 and 17)
Company of heroes 2, works flawlessly only tested on rx460.(mesa 13 and 17)
Tomb Raider, some random crashes, might be some problem with mesa 17, but nevertheless 100% playable finished it not so long ago, there was a performance regression on Mesa 13 but seams fixed on 17.
Shadow of mordor, haven't played it that much but seams ok with mesa 17.
Dirt Rally, works flawlessly on low-medium settings, not one single crash, there are some performance improvements with mesa git.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, never had any crash with mesa 17.

Technically, I think that really only matters for external porters.

That's how probably it is, in fact there is just a Windows icon on titles such as Shadow of Mordor, Borderlands 2, Mad Max, etc..
While many other are listed with a Linux icon (Saints Row, etc..).
