Rust has now sold over 30 thousand copies on Linux
By jo3fis, 21 July 2016 at 9:16 am UTC Likes: 1

I bought it cheap probably back in 2014 sometime on a sale, it always ran so badly and had lots of bugs I could never get into it. It was early access so that didn't shock me. I fired it up the other day and they have certainly made a lot of improvements.

Still not sure if it is my kind of game haha, what I do wonder is how long it will stay in EA for. Does anyone know if he has any sort of rough release window planned?

To me, it looks like a sloppy recreation of Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl with cell shaded graphics. They didn't even bother changing the name much.

Bought this game back in Q1 2014 and have played over 700 hours since then, last time played rust yesterday.
Game runs as it should, it's Unity game and Unity has bad performance no matter what operating system it runs on.
One of my playgroup has similar hardware as I have but hes running on Windows with same graphics settings as I and we're getting pretty much same fps.

Worst problems I had when ran Rust with AMD card, 7850, which isn't best gaming card especially on Linux.
I kinda understand that they don't test Linux client that much as they test Windows client, there isn't rly that much testings since Unity itself should handle it, but ofc it's annoying af when they release buggy client where e.g. keys get stuck right after first key press etc.

What comes to this bullying simulator gameplay, it's one of a kind.
If you don't have any social or other problems to team up with strangers, you have mental problems and you slack in terms of moral, this game could be your favorite game.

I think that he also needs to pay some taxes and probably steam wants a cut from these 19.99 too

Anyway I didn't know about the hate towards us but i don't care too much since i'm not interested in this game.

But it's really sad to hear that, in my opinion a developer makes a Linux port pointing on future sales and not pretending to fill the wallet after a month.. if the game doesn't sell well on Linux is because people stick with Windoz (or because your tweets sucks).
But this may change in the future (not sure for his tweets)

Quoting: GuestSo this game is a third-person action RPG? Is it similar to something better known?

I guess some here don't know it, but Overlord is a very well-known popular game. It is sort-of an RPG, but not quite. The main gameplay hook has you commanding an army of minions to do your bidding, but not in the way one might command RTS troops. It's more a "point there, attack that" sort of deal. And it thrives on humour with the lead writer being none other than Rhianna Pratchett.

I didn't knew all of that...

I didn't buy the game and, if the port doesn't work, I won't buy it.

It's not the first time I read about horrible ports here, a wiki page about them may be useful...

I'm so glad I didn't bought this game on the summer sale. I wasn't aware that it's developed by that asshole Garry and I was looking for a survival game. Luckily I bought 7 Days To Die instead

An update on this game. I did buy it on sale, and promptly discovered that it wouldn't run. The culprit is Ubuntu 16.04's fault as well as the (silent?) devs'. I am able to run it an a 14.04 VM, but

I shouldn't have to do that.

I started a trouble ticket about three weeks ago, and have heard nothing at all. Another Steam user reported that he couldn't get it to run under Fedora or Arch or Ubuntu 16.04.

This from a company which has supported Linux for quite some time. :><:

If he was writing the entire thing from scratch, including the engine I'd understand him being less than appreciative about the 34,000+ Linux buyers, but he didn't, his support for Linux was the press of a button & for that & £20 we get abuse & we're supposed to just smile & take it, or perhaps forgive him & be all sweetness & light, well I for one do not forgive or forget.

I will NEVER buy anything from him or his company even if he does apologise, which I seriously doubt is ever going to happen & if it did would NOT be sincere on his part.

The only reason I have that cluster called Garry's Mod in my games list at all is because it was FREE!

Five years ago, back in my dual-boot days, I bought it, (still in my Steam library) and expect to see it appear in my Linux library Real Soon Now. Having played it, it's not really my cuppa, but I should give it another try, I suppose. Hardly a AAA game, it's still pretty unlike most everything I can think of. BBB, maybe?

Quoting: TheRiddickHe really should have replaced those frogs and flies with Samurai warriors of sorts. Think the biggest complaint was the game was almost all flies and frogs. LOL

It really, REALLY was!

But once you got past the first 2/3 levels, it got fun.

Quoting: ElectricPrismI know like 10 people who use Linux and guess what? 0 of them play Rust - they all play Ark.

The reviews have been mediocre and kept me of any of my Linux Gaming Clan from buying, and also - the anti-linux remarks from the creator have turned me off to ever buying anything from him.

I am coming up on 1,000 games and Rust ain't one of them.

@cxpher - yup, they could have made $80-100 just off of me alone (I do a lot of gifting.) Had he approached it ahead of time like hey guys I'm going to release numbers later so give us all the support you can :)

That would have been a hit.

But now he's got us like a dog rubbing our nose in the numbers after many of us boycotted him due to his arrogance.

And like a abusive boyfriend just expects people to "go with it", this defective behavior might not bite him in the ass today or next week or in a month, but someday arrogance and aggression lead to a fall.

But seriously, he should apologize for distancing the Linux community. I'm 100% dead serious. Why should his mistakes lead to him being hated when he can just say sorry and then we can forgive his ignorance and arrogance.

Quoting: MblackwellI had thought about buying it at some point in the future until he made a lot of anti-Linux statements. I'm sure there are a lot of other Linux users of a similar mindset.

Yep. I took it off of my second-class wishlist the instant it was clear what he really thought of us. I am actually surprised the sales are as high as they are, considering that they were only at 8K at the time he started talking shit about us.

@Nyamiou - this guy gets it. Some sales may have been discounted and many others may have not been counted at all due to wrongly being assigned to windows.

I think I bought 30 games this month all from my phone for my Steam Machine.

Quoting: AnxiousInfusionBefore we proclaim that Linux users earned Facepunch an extra 700K, let's remember that a huge proportion of those sales were probably at a discount. I would be willing to bet the true figure is several hundred thousand dollars lower. And that's not a Linux problem, PC gaming in general is huge on price cuts and seasonal sales.

Quite right. And I would also add that Linux sales can quite easily be counted as Windows sales by Valve if for example you've bought the game on your Android phone or on another computer and you haven't played it in the two weeks after purchase.

Why would he say it wasn't worth it? At 20$ the Linux sales amount to more 600k$. I doubt porting a game built with Unity3d would cost more than 100k$ at most, which means half a million dollars extra profit.
