I climped the tower. Nice ending.

Quoting: liamdaweSure, you can paypal if you like [email protected]. I should add that back in.

Liam, is this still valid? If it is, could you add it to https://www.gamingonlinux.com/support-us/ to make it look official and also help me (and others) find it? I prefer one-time donations through PayPal, and I'm not sure I'll find this information buried in the article history again when I search for it in a few months. Thanks.

I got a feeling the time of when the VR sets will support Linux will be related to Vulkan.

Well Vulkan is also the German word for volcano, maybe they think it sounds "badass"? *shrugs* By the way the window manager from gnome is called "Mutter" which is the German word for mother....

Not all things comes from germany. Mutter (englisch) = Murmeln (german).

Thank goodness, it's not just me! :D

Like all games that can't well convey what they are and what they're about, Heavy Gear Assault makes me uneasy, setting off my CAVEAT EMPTOR alarm.

I'll just wait till this one fully matures, I think.

Saints Row: The Third Linux port report, better than SR2, but still needs improvement
By apocalyptech, 15 April 2016 at 2:03 pm UTC Likes: 1

Quoting: apocalyptechThe game must be, I dunno, compiling shaders or something when that's happening, because in all cases, the second time through playing it, there's always basically no stuttering for me. The opening cinematics of both SR4 and SR3 were basically not watchable for me on the first time through, but then on the second time they play totally fine.
So yeah, I'd tried out SR2 last night as well, and basically experienced the exact same thing, though I had more latent stuttering in SR2 than I've seen in the other games, so the performance there could probably use some more attention. I'm guessing it's just got to compile-and-cache some things during the initial runs, and can read from that cache on subsequent runs.

Anyway: IMO the performance on SR2 is fine once you get through those initial periods of lag. I've only played for an hour or so, but it was running great by the end.

Stealth game Shadwen from Frozenbyte to launch in May, Linux should be day-1

I always though "welp" was an exclaimed version of something akin to "oh dear". See also: yoink, gah, urk, eek, etc. :)

Quoting: tmtvlWelp, guess I'd best quickly inform them that the demo is completely non-functional on my machine, might delay the Linux port by a day or two.

What does "welp" mean? I see it all the time these days, but can't understand the difference between welp and well. Is there one?

"Welp" at the beginning of a sentence like this has a bit more of a resigned tone to it. More like "We're in this situation now, might as well get on with it" than "well", which at least to me has a "time to get down to business" in a more proactive way.

As a stand-alone word, "welp" has a connotation of "there's nothing more to say", thus the "p" providing an abrupt stop to the more open-ended "well", which is typically a little more drawn out. This is the more common usage, far as I know.

Actually 'Chronos' is the Latinized form of a Greek word; and it could be spelt with a 'K' without conflicting with the original spelling.

In Greek the word is spelt with an 'X', not with a 'K'; but 'K' is a 'Greek' letter, so you could say it carries with it some of the original flavor.

Though, sure, it's probably a reference to the 'K' of the 'K'hronos group.

Though seriously, why is it spelled with a 'k'? The word obviously derives from the Latin "Vulcanus" -- the Roman equivalent of Hephaestus; and in Latin the letter 'c' accounts almost exclusively for the 'k' sound.

I mean, if the 'k' were at the beginning, I would've suspected intervention by the KDE e.V.; but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I assume the word "Vulcan" is copyrighted by Paramount. But being a lifelong Star Trek fan, I habitually type "Vulcan" and have to consciously remember to type it as "Vulkan" in this context.

Having tried to play the demo and getting less than stellar results (the tutorial videos gave me a blank screen, so I wasn't able to learn what things did), plus what I saw of it on the livecast a while back, this is definitely not a day-one purchase for me. I won't be surprised if it requires several patches following the launch.

Saints Row: The Third Linux port report, better than SR2, but still needs improvement
By Username already taken, 15 April 2016 at 11:54 am UTC

Quoting: Xpander
Quoting: Username already takenI'm pleased with SR3. It works well with a PS4 controller even though the prompts show Xbox buttons. The frame rate is solid 60 at medium settings 1080p on my system (vsync enabled):

i7 4790k, 32gb 2400Mhz ram, GTX670 with proprietory drivers, Mint 17.3 Cinnamon.

you seriously can't be happy to run it at medium (which makes the game look like sh**) with the hardware you have.
this game is old and i expect to run it 60+ 1080p on high or ultra settings with midrange GPUs and up
You're right, it would be nice to have decent framerates at higher settings. The last time I played the game was on PS3, which I think was 720p30 - now I'm seeing it at 1080p60 which is a nice improvement already. I'm easily pleased though and was glad it worked well after reading bad things about the SR2 port. Looking forward to future performance improvement updates for SR3 though.

I'm glad they addressed this. The overlay is a big feature of Steam. Having said feature come with a 20% FPS penalty would knock much of the shine off the shiny new Vulkan API when using Steam.
