Ziggurat, An FPS Dungeon Crawler Now On Linux And It's Good, But With Issues
By drmoth, 16 August 2014 at 7:26 am UTC

Actually, bought it and I haven't seen any visual bugs yet, except on my Intel HD4000 but that was fixed by updating to latest oibaf ppa (mesa 10.3). Also tried it on an Nvidia GTX660, worked fine.

From the developer:

QuoteBTW, I'm fairly sure we're the only Linux/Mac game made on Unity that properly supports Xbox 360 gamepads, including vibration. Why I'm so sure? Because Unity sucks at gamepad input and we had to code all gamepad input ourselves, and make it work on Linux and Mac.

this swayed me to buy the game. If there are bugs initially I'll just patiently wait for the updates!

GTX 645 + i7 4770 720p resolution

High and medium specs stick right at 30 FPS (assuming this is due to V-sync) give or take a frame.

Low specs fluctuated between 70 and 45 somewhat wildly.

I'm glad you mentioned the resolution thing, I didn't notice it ran at 1080 by default :P

I was interested in the game until I read this.

That's only if you do very well! I'm as good as the next FPS guy, and it took me quite a while to figure out how to pass one "level" without dying.

I'd also like to say that I've had NO graphical glitches on my Intel-only Ubuntu laptop.

It's actually a bit odd that the Linux version of Papo & Yo isn't on Steam. Steam achievements work if you have the Steam client running while playing the Humble Bundle version, so I don't know what's keeping them from putting it up on Steam.

i know it is OT, but it really wonders me how http://www.weareminority.com/papo-yo/ could go unnoticed by game sites. wouldn't even notice this one if i didn't check humble store and saw it on sale (not available on steam, just standalone linux version).

still, beautiful game as this and you can't find single news of release on Linux? steam really spoiled us

practically only announcement one can find googling is official one and this video

GOL Cast: Spraying And Tagging in Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Testing Initiative

Thanks for the preview. I'm currently playing Portal 2 for the first time and this looks like something I might enjoy playing in the future.

The speed and jumping gels remind me of Nihilumbra, but that being a 2D platformer and this game being 3D of course make the gameplay experiences very different.

A New The Witcher 2 Linux Beta Appears, Improved Performance
By Coloneil, 15 August 2014 at 7:45 pm UTC

Almost playable on my intel HD4400 800x600 all settings to minimum :D. Finger crossed for the "Major performance improvements are expected in the near future through the work of AMD and Intel driver developer teams." Anyway 4$ for a good game even very badly ported (Thanks eOn) is still a good deal, I'm just hopping that we will have a real portage for the third one ;)

Major Steam Client Update Released
By Metallinatus, 15 August 2014 at 5:26 pm UTC

Quoting: Half-Shot
Quoting: MetallinatusI wish I was.... last year I was still using a HD 3000 series card and it wasn't veeery powerful but the mesa drivers worked fine with it at least (and there were not even AMD drivers for it anymore)....
Then I bought a HD 7000 series card released last year and, well.... this is how it looks like with mesa.
Catalyst worked (without direct rendering) for one day and then broke Cinnamon.
PS: this is a fresh brand new install of Mint 17 because Catalyst already broke my system last time.

As a result, my underpowered notebook is my saviour once again.
I have a 7000 card on the git drivers which are a tad buggy and from my testing I have NEVER seen that. But to me that looks like a hardware fault and you should get it refunded right away.

If you say so, that is good.... I think.... the little problem is that I bought it in the beginning of the year during my trip to USA.... so refund is not quite an option for me.

AMD Working Closely With Khronos Group On Next-gen OpenGL, Gives Mantle Access
By Half-Shot, 15 August 2014 at 4:59 pm UTC

Quoting: Segata Sanshiro
QuoteMy first thought is that AMD are fighting a losing battle on both the CPU and GPU front, being quite clearly second best at both.
I would agree with the GPU side of things (especially on Linux), but with lower-end CPUs AMD clearly trumps Intel.

I don't think its fair to say that. The Linux drivers are still pretty close on Windows for performance but what people ALWAYS fail to realise is that there are many other factors to choosing a GPU other than performance per watt or per currency.

  • If a new Xorg came out tomorrow, radeon would be supporting it from day one.

  • If xfce-wayland came out tomorrow, radeon would run out of the box on it.

  • If nvidia came out tomorrow and stopped supporting, even if it is theoretical, there would be no obligation by them to release code or do anything.

TL;DR Preformance!=Best

And yes that was fanboyism, not for AMD but for Linux and FOSS. I couldn't care less about catalyst either, but I damn well want mesa to take over.

Cities Skylines, A City Builder Announced From Paradox & It's Coming To Linux

Having a decent city builder on Linux is essential. The only other decent city builder out there (SimCity is no longer considered by anyone with a brain or dignity) is CitiesXL, but with the demise of the developers, the game never got updated and will never get ported. This looks pretty good from the trailer, hopefully it will be far better than the mess that was Cities in Motion 2.

Paradox is really a great developer. It was the first major developer to commit to releasing all games on Linux (even at the same time as the windows release) and makes the best strategy games out there, that make Civ 5 and others look like a children's game in comparison. They have been intent on taking away all my free time since I bought the first Victoria game in 2004, have probably spent thousands of hours on their games, now they're going to take away even more precious time with a x0city sim.

AMD Working Closely With Khronos Group On Next-gen OpenGL, Gives Mantle Access
By Segata Sanshiro, 15 August 2014 at 4:14 pm UTC

QuoteMy first thought is that AMD are fighting a losing battle on both the CPU and GPU front, being quite clearly second best at both.

I would agree with the GPU side of things (especially on Linux), but with lower-end CPUs AMD clearly trumps Intel.

If you look at the FX-6300 and the i3-4130 (both priced the same), the AMD has a passmark of 6359 while the Intel has just 4816. The FX-8350 has 9024 and the i5-4440 has 6500, despite being newer and more expensive and has roughly the same score as the FX-6300 despite costing nearly twice as much. Really, for gaming AMD is the better choice, and getting the more expensive i5 and i7 CPUs (where Intel performs far better) is complete overkill unless you do heavy video editing, etc.

Even if you get one of the best Intel cards, gaming performance is almost identical to those two AMD cards. The myth that you need an i5 or i7 for gaming is simply untrue, that £70 FX-6300 will give you nearly identical gaming to a £230 i7:

Hopefully that doesn't come across as fanboy-ism, I have no loyalty to one or the other, just like to spend money wisely.

I used to think the low playtime in this type of game was an issue, but then I was playing Luftrausers the other night and realised that it's the same game over and over and all you're changing is how your plane looks/flies/attacks. The rest is identical.

I still managed to play it for hours without bothering. It's randomly generated each play through and spectacularly slick. Not going to compete with MetroLL, but still a viable way to lose an evening.

I did double check. Like I said I checked with the developers directly, and their facebook page links directly to it. End of.

Comparing something to Phoronix like that doesn't give your arguments any more merit guys, so cool it with the flaming of other sites.

The developers of the game in question are pointing people to our source, so if that doesn't say something to you then...you're being pedantic as you don't like the site itself.

Using news from golem is like using news from phoronix. I would always double check if possible.

Anyways Spellforce 3 is great news. I loved Spellforce 1.

Also if the thing about The Guild 3 is true, then I hope it will be a bit like a The Guild 1 remake, because The Guild 2 was bs :/

The official facebook page for Spellforce linked to golem.de, that makes it a reputable source this time around considering the developers themselves tell people to go to it. So, I'm more than happy to use it.

The link you gave doesn't seem to mention any platforms anyway.

I picked this up yesterday for $3.99 on steam. It runs quite well(ultra specs) on my desktop with Nvidia 750 TI and runs decently with med specs on my laptop that has a geforce GT 445M.

It seems to crash after an hour of playing though, but go back in after crash and I was good to go for another hour. The auto save feature is a god send because of this. Steam cloud saves work well.

says there will Aquanox 3 and the guild 3. Yet no mention about linux there.
