Valve Looking For A SteamOS Engineer
By MayeulC, 23 July 2014 at 1:01 pm UTC

I'm feeling too young, for once. I would love to work on this, and think I have the required skills, but I'm not even done with my studies yet :(
Anyway, an open letter to whoever will accept this job : make an awesome integration with XBMC, please.

Warhammer Eternal Crusade MMO Will Gain A Linux Version
By MayeulC, 23 July 2014 at 12:34 pm UTC

QuoteBoth ranged and melee weapons have equal emphasis — as in the iconic battles of Warhammer 40,000. Combat begins at a distance with guns and heavy vehicle-mounted weaponry before progressing to bloody blade-on-blade action with brutal executions.

You wrote this two times :)

It seems promising, and I would really enjoy a good Warhammer MMO. That said, good MMOs are hard to produce.
I too like the single purchase system. The last MMO I played that had this system was Global Agenda, but it went free to play (I won't mention TF2 here ;)).
I may be dreaming, but I would love to see the other Warhammer titles ported, like the original Dawn of War strategy games (Dark Crusade, etc...), as well as Warhammer : Spacemarine, and the Dawn of War II games. But that would be a lot of work, and I would understand the use of a wrapper for the original games.

Quoting: wolfyrionseems a very descent engine...

I am thinking to start exploring game engines on my vacation and to try to make at least a very tiny game.
what game engine would you recommend for amateurs to make a descent looking game in Linux ?

Unity?
Leadwerks?

anything else that doesn't require much of coding...??

you can't get better answer than this one

Halfway Turn Based Strategy Released For Linux, It's Good
By Plintslîcho, 23 July 2014 at 6:13 am UTC Likes: 1

The game is simply beautiful! Fantastic graphics (I love the art style), very nice soundtrack and the gameplay is easy to handle but hard to master. Right from the intro Halfway has a great atmosphere. I haven’t played much yet – so far I only have a team of three characters – but what I’ve seen has already convinced me: Halfway is worth any single cent. In fact, I think at roughly nine Euro the game is a steal. I’m really enjoying it.

QuoteOne thing that does bug me also bugs me in a lot of other games like Halfway. Your soldiers have terrible aim! I've repeatedly been two squares away from an enemy with ~70% accuracy and missed, and this happens a lot. Trained soldiers my arse!

True. That’s a gripe I have with many turn based games. Halfway just isn’t any different in that respect- unfortunately.

QuoteWhat I do love though is that it's much more forgiving than games like XCOM, as your soldiers don't die
...

don't die? So what happens then, do they fall unconscious and are just out of that particular battle?

Correct, they fall unconscious and are out for the rest of the battle. After the battle, they also have only limited HPs, which makes any following encounter considerably tougher. If the whole team is taken out (which can happen easily) the player has to restart the mission again.

I think the developers choose this way because Halfway is pretty much a story driven game and the characters are an essential part of it.

I think it's always useful to note whenever a game uses Air. Has anyone had success/problems with this game?

Clockwork Empires From Gaslamp Games Should Be On Linux In August

Quoting: HamishLinux was a target platform from the word go though - it might be pushing the line a tad far if we start demanding same day release for Linux even for the likes of "Earliest Access".

Then I probably misread or don't remember well, I thought they had no plans for Linux, and the game seemed pretty interesting to me, that's why I was disappointed.

Where Kerbals Fear To Tread, Kerbal Space Program 0.24 Out Now
By Rutine, 22 July 2014 at 12:43 pm UTC

Well, I don't know whne my last Kerbal mission was, but it must have been long ago, there seem to have been lots and lots of changes, that's great !

Quoting: oldrocker99It's a wonderful thing for me that I have so many games for Linux today that I have this problem! Back when I started using Linux in '08 there was one commercial game:Neverwinter Nights. Then the Humble Bundles started, and things began to look up. Now, with Steam, there's a surfeit of riches!

Almost the same for me, I did not even knew Neverwinters Nights was on Linux, so no commercial games for me at the beginning. Then, World of Goo came in one of the Humble Bundles, and Majesty HD in the Ubuntu Store, and... so many more now !

Star Ruler 2 4X-RTS Released On Steam For Linux
By MayeulC, 22 July 2014 at 12:42 pm UTC

The first one was a really good game, I especially loved how the propulsion mode was fully newtonian, and how you were not forced to stay on the ecliptic plane (IIRC). It was a hard game to master, though, with so many things to keep an eye on, and an not-so-good looking UI. But it was definitely a good game. I hope they will solve the bits which were annoying, while keeping microgestion systems like ship design, planets infrastructures, etc...
One thing that annoyed me was this microgestion thing, too : you can't really avoid it. It's fun, but sometimes, you would want to do something else, and you are forced back to it.
I think they should make more things optional, while letting the user dive deeper into customization if he wants to.
They should aim for somewhere in-between Sins Of A Solar Empire and Star Ruler 1, (maybe they could allow optional customization to go beyond SR1 in terms of customization, like, let's say, control the buildings placement on the planet, while keeping this as an optional feature).

I must admit, I didn't know they were about to make a sequel, but I am very pleased by this. And, due to overheating problems (which should be solved soon), I couldn't gather any information about this sequel. So, please disregard any comment I may have made that are not relevant.
One last thing : I hope they will open translation to the community. IIRC, French translations were awful in SR1 (maybe there were no translations at all, I can't recall)

not sure how one leads to the others, I assume you mean decent port ? but then so was DoD (no idea of he helped on that) so all should be fine.

Dredmor is a great game, so It's likely that their 2nd game will also be good.

Quoting: ShmerlWhat is SteamOS compositor? Does it use Wayland in any way?
It's based on xcompmgr, but has (as of a while ago) 4200 lines of additional patches.

I'm not sure, no do I think that it works with wayland [yet].

So it is using X.org. At least it's good they aren't trying to reinvent the wheel and make their own display server (like Ubuntu does). Hopefully they'll turn it into Wayland compositor when the drivers will make it possible.

Maybe it'd be easy enough to mod it so that parts dropped with chutes opened are considered to rescued?
