Quoting: TheBossYou may think it's overreacting, but I will keep pointing out developers that do stuff like this.

Do stuff like what?? Tone it down a little, maybe.
Tone it down? Cheeky.

I think you're fully aware of what I am talking about: Developers who state Linux is a platform right up until release, then release without Linux support and don't mention it anywhere. Forcing me and other users to chase them up for answers.

I will continue to point out developers that do it, as the majority appreciate it. We also have people who like to know what happens with games that we previously covered.

When did we suddenly start expecting day 1 releases by default?

We're 2% of the market, and like it or not, whether intentional or not, GOL represents the face of that 2%. And if you go about this thing with all the grace and tact of a British tabloid, it does a huge disservice to us all.

So yeah, tone it down.

The "majority" you speak of is debatable too - did you take a survey?

If GOL is the "face" of the 2%, then I will continue to point out developers who do shady things. And I will continue to be happy doing so. I get annoyed by it as a potential customer, and as someone who reports on things based on the word of these developers.

I feel like I'm repeating myself here. The Steam store and everywhere mentions Linux right up until the release. It releases and the Linux mentions are removed, and no communication until quizzed on it.

If you feel like me chasing down developers who bait and switch isn't worth your time, I really don't care.

On my old PC I had to use boot-repair every single time I installed any Linux distribution, grub would never install and boot correctly.

With this new system I had to reset the motherboard to get Ubuntu to boot and work properly, as the manufacturer put Windows on to test it, even though I selected the No OS option. That took me an entire day to figure out, had to phone them in the end. Apparently something to do with UEFI, I don't quite understand it, but he was right. I held down a button on the motherboard to reset it, then Ubuntu was fine.

There are lots of niggling issues.

Quoting: scaineThanks for the update Stesen. Can I ask a couple of questions, since your update still leaves me with some uncertainty - mainly because you keep inferring things should work, but if you don't know, I don't see how you can expect us to pledge.

So my two questions are: 1) how does the Linux build work right now and 2) Can you confirm that Linux builds be available at your $50 tier "Rook"?

Given your response, if you were on Kickstarter, you'd probably have my money in the near future. Sadly, I don't trust Fig, but best of luck with your campaign.

I have to echo this post. I would also very much like to know if the Linux build has even been tested yet, and if it will see regular tests.

I would hardly call that upfront, that's an old post before this campaign was even a thing, that linked first post states:
QuoteCan't guarantee a day 1 Linux release, but it will be something we'll be looking at from the start
Yet this campaign said Linux/Mac was day-1 in the FAQ, I email them, it gets edited with no reply to me.

I consider that a bit shady personally.

If it does come to Linux sometime, great, I will play it. There's no way I'm funding it now though.

Update: After posting this, they actually changed their FAQ. It no longer states Linux will be a day-1 platform.

I guess they got my email.

You can't hide my quotes :).

Will be interesting to see if I get a reply to my email, would like to see the situation cleared up.

QuoteWith the cross-platform capabilities of Unity it won't be a problem.

I don't want to be too cynical, but I think I've heard that before.
Depends how a developer has planned for it. Middleware is most often the problem.

Looks like Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is being ported to Linux by Feral Interactive

There was a time for a lot of us when Windows was all we knew, or what we mainly used, or even now dual-boot as we like the idea of Linux but it's not just there yet.

Wine comes in handy for all of those people, and it's quite a large amount of people in reality.

Having older games ported means it's more native games that don't need to be configured with Wine, it just makes it easier, and any future sales can be properly counted for our platform. For dual-booters, it would mean one less game again to reboot for keeping them on Linux for longer.

Wine is an amazing bit of software, and I think people who totally shun it are a bit silly. There was a time when it was really all we had. You don't need to cut out your favourite series of games just because you use Linux thanks to it.

Any porting company will be fully aware of any crossover with people who already own it, they wouldn't go into it if they didn't think it would be worth it.

We're talking about a positively received game, and a popular series coming over to Linux natively, what's not to love?

Quoting: subIs this a Winelib port or the Windows game packaged and preconfigured in Wine?

Runs in a WINE sandbox.

Thanks!

I'd really appreciate if Liam could add that bit of information in future articles of "uses Wine" ports. :)
At least when that information is available or he has access to the game.

Imho Winelib ports are actually not really a bad thing (for old games at least) while just packaging the
Windows binary is quite *meh*.

I am only able to do this for games I own, I do not own this game and Topware don't give me keys to any of their games. Can't write about what I don't have :)
