Sanctum 2 FPS/Tower Defence Hybrid Now Has An Open Beta On Steam
12 Apr 2014 at 7:16 am UTC

A tip for downloading the beta: switch to the beta before downloading anything. I downloaded 700mb of non-beta, got a missing executable, and had to download 1,2gb again.

Natural Selection 2's Direct3D HLSL to OpenGL GLSL Parser Open Sourced
28 Mar 2014 at 5:21 pm UTC

Unity has a similar, open-source compiler (derived from mesa): https://github.com/aras-p/hlsl2glslfork [External Link] . Unreal uses the same codebase, but they aren't publishing their proprietary branch at all.

Here's a good overview of cross-API shaders: http://aras-p.info/blog/2014/03/28/cross-platform-shaders-in-2014/ [External Link]

Octopus City Blues Game-Like Adventure Game Available For Pre-Order

I've also been burned by game-like things with weak gameplay.
Pro tip for those in no hurry: use the positive/negative review filters on the steam store page. If there isn't anything negative it's probably too early. Read a bit of both until you know which way you lean. Try to buy good games less often rather than meh sales you may not care to finish.

Stranded, A Sci-Fi Point & Click Adventure Now Out For Linux, It's Odd
20 Mar 2014 at 12:25 am UTC

So Ren'Py can be extended to do point and click, that's new.

I've only played Katawa Shoujo [External Link]. Maybe the first chapter of Analogue [External Link] too, enough to know that wasn't going to be a very cheerful story.

Epic Games & Mozilla Give Sneak Peak At Unreal Engine 4 In The Browser

If UE4 relies on shared memory parallelism that part will be very hard to port, maybe with a compiler hacker reimplementing memory barriers as IPC between webworkers.

The Last Tinker: City Of Colors, Adventure Game Arriving On Linux This Summer

Yess, platforming.
Handling looks a lot like Psychonauts: rails, automatically grabbing bars, a stomp-punch.

CRYENGINE from Crytek Announces Official Linux Support Ahead Of GDC

Plus, hands-on demos! That's a vote of confidence for their Linux performance.

Defense Grid 2 is happening and coming to Linux!
9 Mar 2014 at 3:35 am UTC

This Defense Grid post-mortem [External Link] (via Kickstarter updates [External Link]) gives some really good reasons to target Linux: their first release got screwed by Microsoft (on delays and price points), they managed to release to Steam instead, and worked on Valve's CS:GO later on.

Fight The Dragon Hack & Slash RPG Hitting Linux This Month

Looks lovely, and I like their priorities: short coop sessions (though I hope solo will be good as well) and a really usable level builder.
