Quoting: strypeyI'd be interested to know how they identify GNU/Linux, and which distros.
Open a Shell and run the command: cat /etc/os-release
Then you get information like this for Ubuntu14.04.4 LTS:
crazy@zbox02 ~ $ cat /etc/os-release
NAME="Ubuntu"
VERSION="14.04.4 LTS, Trusty Tahr"
ID=ubuntu
ID_LIKE=debian
PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS"
VERSION_ID="14.04"
HOME_URL="http://www.ubuntu.com/"
SUPPORT_URL="http://help.ubuntu.com/"
BUG_REPORT_URL="http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/"
crazy@zbox02 ~ $

or this for openSUSE 12.3:
crazy@zbox03:~> cat /etc/os-release
NAME=openSUSE
VERSION="12.3 (Dartmouth)"
VERSION_ID="12.3"
PRETTY_NAME="openSUSE 12.3 (Dartmouth) (x86_64)"
ID=opensuse
ANSI_COLOR="0;32"
CPE_NAME="cpe:/o:opensuse:opensuse:12.3"

Quoting: strypeyThere is a possibility that computers are misidentifying themselves for various reasons.
No, there is not! The survey is done by the Steam-Client and runs directly on the OS. You will have to use Wine if you want your Linux count as Windows :). Also you can verify the data before submitting it to Valve.

Quoting: strypeyor the GNU/Linux user community needs to build a free code alternative to Steam, SteamOS, and Steam Machines.
Hmmm... all of them exists in some way already :)

Quoting: whitewolfguyDoes SteamOs add a percentage to this data?
No, as far I know they are still not counted. So hopefully there are few millions SteamOS User which haven't been counted yet :)

Quoting: Comandante oardoA lot of people is using Steam on Linux via WINe, How the statistics of the Steam Hardware Survey recognize those accounts?.. As Windows XP users? As Others?
Good question, I also have this doubt.
Wine counts as Windows. Which version depends on how you have configured Wine. You can see as which Window version it counts in the survey data which Steam shows you before you send the survey.

Quoting: seveni don't know anyone who uses steamOs, i honestly think not alot of people use it
Most everyone who buys a Steam Machine?
Wouldn't be so sure. I played around with it for almost two weeks before I replaced it with a regular Linux Distribution. Most people I know with Steam Machines have done the same, and replaced it as well after a few days. It has to many flaws.

GOL SteamOS & Linux Survey results for February

Still quite a lot of people use Wine, and it's not surprising since there's still a vast amount of games we don't have. Hopefully as more games get ported this will go down.
Doubt that! As I'm using Wine to play older which are very unlikely to be ported.

Quoting: lucifertdarkWow a 20% drop between December & February of people who bought games on Steam, that's not a good sign for Valve.
It looks like Humble picked up most of the slack. Linux gamers are just more savvy about DRM-free.
Those that prefer DRM-free rather go to GOG nowadays, Humble isn't first-class on that anymore. Sad, but true...
Humble has become another cheap Steamkey-Reseller and had some nice bundles over last month. So I'm not surprised that Humble went up.

The problem with GOG is that it misses lots of native Linux Builds which are available elsewhere e.g. on Steam for a longer time already. Then they have to improve their Linux support. I'm kinda surprised that this "joke" of Client hasn't been ported yet. Sorry, but my support for GOG has dropped to almost zero.

New Linux & SteamOS gamer survey for March
1 Mar 2016 at 4:02 pm UTC

The last question about the Steam Machine doesn't make much sense.

The quesion is: Did you buy a Steam Machine?

"Please vote honestly, do not vote Yes to make it look good, as that helps no one. Tick any that apply to you."

There is no yes!

Answers are:
Steam Link
Pre-built Steam Machine
Built my own (only SteamOS counts here!)
No
Planning to
Still undecided

I guess my Zotac counts as Pre-Built then.

Minecraft 1.9 released, the one with better combat
1 Mar 2016 at 3:42 pm UTC

The Minecraft developers has finally done something about the boring combat in Minecraft
Boring? It was a lot of fun esp. if you play Panem-Like Games or build your own weapons (e.g. cannons) and so on. Even Arena & Capture The Flag worked fine. If that is boring then you still have tons of mods, which adds different combat styles and weapons.

BTW: Anyone has an idea where can I get the Modpack "Magic Farm 2". I have installed FTB, but it seems "Magic Farm 2" is gone :(. In particular I'm looking for the included Mods, which created the insane Dungeons with End Bosses, new monsters, RPG Elements and new spawners & traps like the TNT-Zombie-Spawner or the 360 Degree Arrow Trap.

Quoting: PeciskI really don't understand why people keep making big deal out of Nvidia/AMD situation. Yes, currently, AMD is lagging behind.
AMD is lagging behind for over 10 years. They making lots of promises and have delivered almost nothing!

Earth 2160, the RTS game looks like it's getting a Linux version on Steam
4 Feb 2016 at 9:12 am UTC

Quoting: TheBossIt's obviously not an issue if these updates on SteamDB are from today.
That is not how this works. If a company request insolvency proceedings then it doesn't mean that ALL activity stops from this point on. Target of these proceedings is to get the company back on track and liquid again. Only if the company is in to bad shape then it will be terminated. However as part of these proceedings not so profitable activities can and will be canceled, which could affect the release of Earth 2160 for Linux. But we will see what will happen.
