I just finished playing the "Revision" mod version a couple months ago. It was the fun having not played the base game for probably 15 years. I'm probably not in the market to immediately play it through again, but otherwise I would have been all over this!
I'm sure there is going to be grumbling about if it's graphics-ed enough, but it looks like a nice upgrade I guess. I think the bigger issue will be that it looks like the original game code running underneath. The gameplay and animations are still all going to be very 1999... You can see it in the trailer too. I wonder if it will be well received as a result.

but it also includes the source code as wellExcellent. I've been doing the same with my (in development) game Veridian Expanse. I just dump the source code needed to build it into my resources zip archive. It only adds 200kb to the download size, so why not? Source code is of little use to pirates, and I don't plan on adding DRM anyway. On the other hand, maybe someone will use the source to run the game on some interesting bit of hardware or fun niche OS. :) Inevitably in 20 years when bitrot sets in maybe someone will still want to run it on some future machine too.

Quoting: Fester_MuddIf things like video playback doesn't work OOTB how could anyone recommend this to any new user ..I rather like Fedora for reasons, but I actually wouldn't recommend it to new users for exactly (and maybe only) that reason. I actually had a friend that was thinking about giving Linux and specifically Fedora a try, and I felt compelled to warn them that it's not hard to deal with, but it is annoying that it doesn't "just work".
Steam purchases now clearly state you're just getting a license not ownership

Eh, yeah it made it into the end of the article, but I was going to point out that physical media isn't "ownership" either unfortunately. The benefit is that it can't be remotely taken away from you with some keystrokes.
As a gamedev I'm not enamored with Steam, but as a consumer they are great. I'm just waiting for the day to come when a leadership change at Steam causes it to become someone I hate as a consumer too. :-\

Marathon 1 was good and fun and all, but it didn't age nearly as well as the sequels. Some weird level design that felt like it relied more on the novelty of 3D. I dunno... I feel like Doom aged even worse though. >_>
The Marathon sequels though... Fantastic games. :D

I really like modern Gnome myself, so yeah I just shrugged and held down the super button. I do wonder what percentage of Gnome users know about that though. I suspect not a lot.

Quoting: SamsaiI'm sure there are probably plenty of people that would be annoyed by missing decorations though. There are 2 programs I use regularly that have handwritten Wayland support and decided against using libdecor because "they shouldn't have to". The one dev is even pretty angry about it and says that people should use a sensible desktop environment if it bothers them.

Quoting: Purple Library Guy1: Gnome is annoying for developersWell... Gnome is annoying for a vocal minority that don't like Gnome might be more accurate? Being the most popular DE is going to attract a bunch of ire from it's non fans. (shrug) SDL's Wayland stuff works out of the box with libdecor, and as of a year ago even provides native GTK window decorations. I'm not sure why they needed to do anything to enable it. My experience for the last few years developing SDL stuff on Gnome + Wayland is that it basically "just works". Even though they are statically linking things, I would have thought SDL's build scripts would just take care of the dependencies and such. I've only ever dynamically linked it though, so maybe not?
