Huh, so one nice thing about SDL is that it mostly "just works". Why did they need to add the Wayland protocols into their source tree, and link with libdecor themselves? I predominantly test my SDL stuff on Wayland and I've never had to even think about that. Is it because they are statically linking maybe?

Steam Deck OLED is just pure joy - the definitive Steam Deck

My Deck has been the best gaming value I've had in a long time. I just ordered the upgrade. >_> I had kicked myself for not getting the anti-glare version originally anyway. Surely I can find a good home for my original. :)

Oh man! Bungie had a Mac port of this in the 90's that I just played the crap out of. A year or two ago I installed this on my RPi and played through most of it. Kinda just pure classic action chaos. :)

Raspberry Pi 5 announced - still tiny, much more powerful

Neat! The Pi4 has been my min spec for developing Veridian Expanse ever since they made the Vulkan driver for it. Though I'm feeling a bit frustrated still that the Mesa version they ship with the default OS is *years* out of date and performs quite badly to the current version. I suppose this means that the v-sync issues will probably never be fixed on the Pi4 too. :( (IIRC it uses a software interrupt instead of a hardware one as a workaround for GPU firmware issues causing consistent tearing under even moderate load)

A little conflicted about what I should do at this point. Like targeting the Pi4 as a min spec has always been justified as "why not?" Maybe the Debian Bookworm OS update will magically fix everything when that finally drops. >_>

Unity apologises for the new runtime fee, say they will make changes

I've been working with on Unity projects as a contractor since 2009. (The editor was Mac only back then!) I don't plan on holding my breath. >_<

I really hope that this convinces a lot of people to try Godot even if it's not the "most powerful" or whatever. It's going to be just fine for a lot of projects. I also hope people start considering that a lot of games (particularly 2D) don't even need an engine... There's so many great tools and libraries out there that aren't all unified up into an engine. Heck, even my nephew made a little game from scratch in Pico8 because nobody told him it was "hard". It doesn't have to be rocket surgery if you aren't shooting for the stars.

Unity introduces new fees for game devs based on revenue and game installs

Quoting: Smoke39What is the relevance of number of installs?
If I was to guess, it's because they are squarely targeting the mobile free-to-play market where installs are high. You gotta remember Riccitello (the CEO) insulted developers as "f*cking idiots" if they don't monetize right. From the context... he meant microtransactions. This was just last year, and that's where he thinks the money is. (https://www.pocketgamer.biz/interview/79190/unity-ironsource-john-riccitiello-marc-whitten-merger/)

Jeez. This is the most Unity-in-202X thing I've heard yet. Remember when they bought that IronSource analytics company? (The one that had an uneasy past relationship with malware?) They released a bunch of financials at that time that made it pretty obvious that they made very little money from the game engine itself. It was all ads, services, and selling user data. This slots right in with that honestly...

Most of the work I do is contracting, and most of the contracting people want to hire us for nowadays is Unity. I've become so tired of Unity's crap. :( The constant turnover and deprecation of APIs, the constant breaking changes, the instability and unpredictability of working with them... Augh! I'm making a game on the side called Veridian Expanse and I'm absolutely _not_ using Unity as I want to be able to enjoy creating it.

Distrobox can open up the Steam Deck to a whole new world

Awesome! My laptop died and I have a pre-order for an AMD Framework coming... soon hopefully? The Deck's small screen isn't ideal, but I was able to get all my tools and such installed and working without too much effort. Thanks for pointing this project out. :)

Yeah, seems nice. Though the wooden panels on their Thelios were a bit of a selling point to me personally. Looks a little bland without it, but at least there isn't gaudy glass and RGB. >_<

edit: Oooooh "compatible with Thelio accents"
