September 2023 Steam Survey: macOS and Linux dip but Linux remains above macOS
3 Oct 2023 at 5:31 am UTC

Quoting: Fester_MuddIn any case, Linux has come such a long way now that gaming is a true choice in the ecosystem. These little dips up or down don't mean much.

macOS is going away as a gaming platform, that's sure. Let's see what happens when Chrome OS (also Linux btw!) gets Steam without flags and out of beta (so usable as default in select Chromebooks which you buy from shelves in store).

Steam Deck keeps going strong
Yeah yeah 😁

Interesting that Mac is getting more and more AAA ports than ever. There is only one catch: you will not find them on Steam but on the Mac App Store as exclusives.

Weird. I have played it on my PS5 but stopped after 5-6 hours. It is kinda boring Sony adventure template with typical Open World “features”.

Linux user share remains above macOS in the latest Steam Survey

Well I dunno, my 2 cents:

I have a PC with RTX 4090, MacBook Pro 16" M1 Pro (Apple Silicon) and Steam Deck.

The Steam Survey has popped two times on my PC, once on my Steam Deck but literally zero times on my MacBook Pro, which I own for almost 2 years now.

Also many "casual Mac gamers" (if they can be described this way) do not buy games on the Steam. They are just usually buying games on the Mac App Store. Sure, there are also some "serious Mac gamers" who do use Steam, they install Crossover or use Parallels Desktop. However they are minority.

And keep in mind one thing. Apple sponsored ports are usually Mac App Store exclusive like Resident Evil Village.

So... yeah.

Quoting: Alm888Steam Deck Verified. Linux is not supported.

A nice example that "Steam Deck support" /= "Linux support".
Exactly what I have said long ago, glad I am not the only one.

The Linux market share appears to continue rising with Ubuntu winning

Quoting: helloCLDIs it possible that the apparent increase in Linux share is due to Windows users dropping their desktops/laptops entirely and going purely mobile? Meaning that Linux users aren't increasing, it's just the number of people using a web browser on a desktop or laptop is decreasing across the board?
Yep. As a former teacher I can say normies don't care about Linux or OS alternatives. They just use what they have on their machine.

And especially nowadays there is a big shift towards mobile devices, smartphones. I know plenty of people who do not have computer at all and they are pretty happy with their smartphone.

The whole PC market is shrinking and the most people live and use only the browser. OS doesn't matter in that case. Similarly the more people are just using their smartphone and browser there.

My 5cent, I can be wrong of course.

Steam Play Proton 5.0-8 has released (update: 5.0-9 too)

Quoting: Xaero_VincentThere appears to be a nasty new issue (probably introduced by a change in the EA Origin client) that breaks any game on Steam that uses the EA Origin client via Proton or Wine.

I hope this gets fixed soon so I can play Mirrors Edge: Catalyst that I just bought.

So it might be the case I can no longer play Jedi Fallen Order ...

The Linux market share still appears to be rising

Quoting: GuestMaybe more devs working from home on their own Linux machines, freer of corporate constraints ?
I might live in the bubble, but the devs around me are happily keeping their Windows 10 and trying WSL2...
