Quoting: CheesenessWell, yes and no. I think there's an insinuation in that last video that DF are going to be trying to collaborate with the ResidualVM developers. If that ends up happening, then that's potentially really positive and hopefully will lead to making sure that ResidualVM supports this new version of the game from day zero, and that's a little exciting.Let's say fair. Double Fine is unique studio, but I seriously doubt that they're going to swap their own proprietary engine to something else. I also doubt they'll going to use formats/features compatible with engine from 1998.

I doubt there is something worse than closed source proprietary Wine that not likely will share their codebase with mainline. More of proprietary wrappers it's not something Linux need for sure.

Quoting: killxdenAlso the eON wrapper is still under development for Linux, if you want to help improve it for future eON ports, then help the devs. No, thanks. I better go pray their company go bankrupt. :woot:

A Developer Of Unity3D Also Speaks Out About OpenGL

Game developers just trying to sent some signal to everyone include AMD and Intel to make them fix their crappy drivers. And yeah if MS distribute crippled AMD legacy drivers this mean it's AMD allowed them to do so.
1 Jun 2014 at 11:46 pm UTC
Quoting: berarmaSo Windows is shipping with graphic drivers that have OpenGL support stripped out? MS has always been very smart when it comes to protecting their interests.Correct. AMD drivers and some Intel drivers bundled with Windows lack OpenGL support, but main problem it's fact that player can't easily replace update AMD and Intel drivers and this have nothing to do with MS.
Quoting: berarmaThe current anti-OpenGL campaign seems to be in the very same line. Developers complaining that it's OpenGL's fault that MS strips OpenGL support out from their graphic drivers, how absurd that is?If you try to look around you'll notice that MS don't give a shit about PC games and there is no "anti-OpenGL campaign".

PS: Other problem I forgot to notice about OpenGL games.
There is a lot of people who don't understand what hybrid graphics is.
They might even updating drivers, but only for AMD/Nvidia and not Intel because they don't even know what integrated graphics is or *THINKS* that every game using discrete graphics. As result many many games keep running on Intel graphics with drivers from 2011 which mean instant crash for OpenGL game. :><:
There is per-game profile for Nvidia Optimus and AMD Dual Graphics, but those mainly for AAA games only and most of indie games will never get such profile.

Quoting: Nikolaj HansenAfaik, steam can also upgrade, or suggest updates, to your systems gpu. This isn't working for laptops especially one with AMD.

I suppose there was few thousands of topics related to old drivers and possible more. Even if game will print large text with "UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS" many people wouldn't do that anyway or will do that wrong.
Unfortunately there is large list of problems with driver updates you don't know about:
And outdated drivers just don't work. They expose GL, but will crash all the time because there isn't really tested support around.
When it's come to games like PA where people paid their money for they'll going to complain and ask for help. If this was F2P title player who met such problem will just go and play another game.

I've never met a Windows gamer who doesn't update their graphics drivers, have you?Yes, a lot. You know I support players of Planetary Annihilation for about a year and here is my personal sub-forum on Steam:

Seems strange that someone who games on Windows wouldn't update the one thing that could really change their experience. Especially since on Windows things like the Nvidia control panel actually tells you each time there's a new update. There is multiple problems with way you thinking. Unity3D it's middleware, the engine which target for extremely large audience so they have to be sure their engine working on any crappy laptop.
Unfortunately there is large list of problems with driver updates you don't know about:
- Some users just unable to update their drivers because they don't have admin account on Windows. It's can be work laptop within company workgroup for example.
- AMD mobility drivers fail to install 80% of times.
I even wrote multi-page how-to about updating this peace of crap:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/233250/discussions/2/558749190925676183/ [External Link]
Some laptops just not supported by official drivers!
- Intel allow vendors to deny usage of automatic EXE installer with "not validated for this computer" crap. Installing drivers from ZIP isn't f*ckig easy:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/233250/discussions/2/558749190911446231/ [External Link]
Even with detailed instruction many players might spend hour on update it and I doubt if someone's grandpa will able to do anything like that if he need to install some casual game.
- Windows 8 ship built-in drivers for AMD legacy GPUs and some Intel iGPUs that DO NOT HAVE OPENGL SUPPORT. For AMD you can't even replace them with one from official website, manual installation, again:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/233250/discussions/2/648817378357910399/ [External Link]
- On some rare laptops (many of them with Nvidia 3XXM) you just can't update drivers due to changed IDs. You have to patch BIOS to make update possible.
- This is just portion of issues...
And outdated drivers just don't work. They expose GL, but will crash all the time because there isn't really tested support around.
Not many people would be buying an actual graphics card not use Windows in-built drivers now would they?Unfortunately there is a lot of people who aren't as tech savvy as you. It's not OpenGL fault, but GPU vendor fault (especially AMD), but developers can't just reject this.
When it's come to games like PA where people paid their money for they'll going to complain and ask for help. If this was F2P title player who met such problem will just go and play another game.

Quoting: GuestThey promised both DRM-free and Steam versions and this is what I demand. DRM is an anti-feature and I won't believe in any technical excuse that forces it's implementation. They promised DRM-free to Kickstarter backers and not anyone else. ;)

Game also don't use any middleware that might cause problems with porting.

Quoting: mannyso if anyone tried it on windows, does they have good OpenGL support or is more DirectX oriented? At moment it's using Direct3D with D3D10 feature level used, but some bits inside executable show that engine have OpenGL renderer.
Game also don't use any middleware that might cause problems with porting.
Quoting: GuestA version that can't be played offline looks more crippled to me.Might be for you, but most of people fine about Steam because it's can run games offline. In same time inability to use online multiplayer it's kind a sad.
