I have the whole of EA on my ignore list. So I won't see this one anyway.

So basically Nintendo lowered themselves to the rank of a patent troll.
I remember Gnome being targeted by one. The patent was literally hand drawn with a few lines. And it was something stupid like this moves there.
A crowd funder was started and Gnome won. And they made a counter claim to put this patent back in the public domain. Which was granted.

Ah. The community comes to the rescue again! This kind of thing is also done in the PS3 community. These devs analyze the network packages and reverse engineer the protocols used by the game.
I believe one of these projects is called psone? You have to ask for access when using an emulator but that is not required when playing on original hardware.
All you have to do is enter an alternative dns server address. This leads the game to their server instead of the original.

This hasn't reached my country yet, but I'm almost ready to pull the Internet plug. It's a shame of my Steam library. But my GOG library and my physical Playstation 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 collection is a nice alternative.
As for the online services as Steam, so long and thanks for the fish.
