Sony buy up KADOKAWA shares to become largest shareholder of the FromSoftware parent company

Quoting: KlaasThe name of the Sony president has to be the Japanese equivalent to Mäxchen Müller in German (i.e. a generic placeholder name).
You think so? When I think of good old 'John Smith' type names in Japanese, it's always gonna be something like Tanaka Tarou/Touka, or Suzuki Shinichirou/Sakura, or Yamada Yasuo/Youko, or something like that. I don't think Totoki is a very common name.

Steam Replay for 2024 is live to show off all those hours you played
19 Dec 2024 at 10:28 am UTC

My working through my backlog is quite noticeable: played 90 games, gained 248 achievements, and played 42% classic games and 53% recent favourites. Also interesting to see 63% of my playtime is on the Steam Deck. I would've expected it to be more, but I guess I haven't got my Deck as long as I thought.

KDE Plasma 6.3 will have much better fractional scaling

Quoting: legluondunetHow is KDE plasma behavior today? Is it enough stable for a daily use and gaming ? How is it resources consuming ? I prefer light DE and keep resources for gaming.
As long as you have only a single monitor it's more-or-less fine. If you have multiple monitors it's kinda garbage. I've also noticed a bug where after running an application which would under X11 disable compositing, under Wayland it disables the blur effect and it doesn't get re-enabled. But yeah, I'm using 2 monitors and I just have to use Awesome because otherwise the experience is crap (workspaces switch on both monitors at once, applications have a bad habit of opening on the wrong monitor, applications don't reopen in the same position,...).

Humble bring back the excellent Beamdog & Owlcat RPG Bundle for a limited time

The only games this is missing to be a 'best RPGs, like, ever' bundle would be the Pillars of Eternity and Shadowrun series. I would highly recommend these games for RPG fans, but they probably have them already.

EA pledge another 23 accessibility patents for public royalty-free use

Quoting: tuubiIf the world were sane and software patents were not a thing, none of this would be necessary.
I'll take 20 year patents over life+95 years copyright any day of the week. Also I do think there's at least some level of creativity involved in making software, so I don't think the 'software is discovered, not invented' thing holds water. That said I'll agree that patent trolls and defensive patents are clear signs that the patent system could do with improvement. I just don't know how you would improve it without causing patent offices to need entire legions of employees to be able to do their job properly.

The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2025

Quoting: BlackBloodRumHaha, let me just say as a Gentoo user with a custom built PC, it's not about being '1337' it's about having control over how things are setup. Some of us just want the simplicity of doing it yourself. Quick applying of patches, able to modify the software easily, etc, etc.

It's just convenient.

What you're meaning to refer to, is arch users. We don't get time to post how 1337 we are, we're too busy compiling our software.
A couple of months ago I decided to try and give Gentoo another spin (in the past I bounced off kernel configuration because I couldn't manage to get a working kernel), and this time I got a working system installed... and then I bounced off before I got X set up because I got sick and tired of waiting for the compilation times. Maybe some day I'll give it another shot (although I've actually kinda got my eyes on Guix), but for the moment I'll keep flipping between Arch and Tumbleweed.

Ah, but with Gentoo it's easier to manage the compilation flags of the software you install so you can squeeze out more performance, so that's better for the 1337 g@mers with the custom built PCs with water cooling and all that nonsense. Joking aside, I think Tumbleweed might also be good for someone who just wants to play games as you get up-to-date drivers and everything without having to do the scary big update dance every couple of months (plus it makes it easy to set up automatic backups).

Best cheap Steam Deck / Linux games in the Steam Autumn Sale 2024

Quoting: kernelkidI would also recommend to anyone who enjoys FPS games, if you don't own F.E.A.R, now is the time. Its only a buck on GOG or two bucks on steam. MUST BUY if a fan of genre.
I'll second the First Encounter Assault Recon recommendation. I never really cared much for cover-based F/TPSes, I tried HALO and it didn't grab me at all, but F.E.A.R. really worked for me. Something about the gunplay reminds me of classics like Unreal Tournament and Quake, even though you're a lot more limited in terms of arsenal.

Another FPS I would recommend people check out would be Hedon Bloodrite, which is currently 25% off on GOG. It's built on a fork of gzdoom (fork's called hzdoom), and it's a real blast. ...although I must admit that I'm not much of an FPS player, so my recommendation should be taken with a grain of salt. Try the demo first, I guess, that's what I did.

Quoting: NezchanBut I'm thinking Arcanum, which is at a temptingly low price of less than CDN $2, and maybe Psychroma, which looks intriguing.
Arcanum is so amazing, but you kinda have to accept it's a bit older and has that typical Troika/Obsidian jank. Of note: if you decide to try a persuasion build, don't expect conversations to suddenly have a big **PERSUADE** disclaimed option. The persuasion options are regular conversation options which are always present, they just don't work unless you have the skill (and sometimes the stats) to make them work.

Picked up Palworld. Gonna have to back it up before the Nintendo lawyers take it down.
