Internet Archive hit with DDoS attacks and hacked with 31 million accounts hit

Quoting: pbI just wonder why did 31 million people need an account on archive.org. Genuinely wonder, because I've been using it (occasionally) for 25 years and never needed an account.
I have an account there because I wanted to borrow a book some time in the past. It's also nice that I don't get the donate pop-up for a while after I donate (you could probably use an extension to hide it, but that's just mean).

Quoting: LoudTechieSince Corona they're actually in hot water about that, because back than they suddenly let everybody at once use these media files(without permission).
Yeah, that was SO stupid, and I really hate that IA poisoned the wells and salted the earth when the lawsuit happened. 'Oh no, they're attacking digital libraries, please stop them from destroying digital libraries, all we do is the same as a library but digital, is that so bad?' And meanwhile they're letting everyone borrow the same single copy of a single book they have. So stupid. And them trying to defend themselves with pretending like they didn't do the stupid obviously illegal thing and then getting a ruling that may prevent others from starting digital libraries is just so terrible.

Still though, most of the IA's works are a massive benefit to all of humanity and attacking them like this is really terrible. It kinda reminds me of those idiots who glue themselves to paintings to protest climate change, and I wonder if all of them are just false flag operators trying to discredit the cause they claim to be championing. ...Maybe I just played too much Deus Ex.

Oh yeah, wasn't Zoom the store that marketed itself with having "boomer shooters"? Man, it's been a while since they launched, hasn't it.

Quoting: tuubiJust out of curiosity: Why would you compare it to Technobabylon? Gameplay is very different, graphical style is different, one is a horror story and the other one is sci-fi... As far as I can tell, there's very little overlap. It's like comparing Dirt Rally to SuperTuxKart.
They're both side-scrolling adventure games, aren't they? It's like comparing it to I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream or Quest For Glory. (To be honest it's been a while since I played through Whispering Willows, so I may be misremembering. According to Steam I got the Sixth Sense on February 12th, 2020.)

Quoting: no_information_hereI enjoyed Whispering Willows when I played it a number of years ago. Nothing groundbreaking but a decent little game.
Same, played through it on Steam and while it has some neat visual designs the game proper didn't resonate as much with me as Technobabylon did.

Nintendo Switch emulator Ryujinx gets shut down

I've gotta say, the little bit of goodwill Nintendo gets from me from their social programs [External Link] really goes to waste when they go after projects like this. Let's hope 5 years from now, when they've moved on to the successor of the Switch, Switch emulators can finally get developed in peace.

Steam Deck - SteamOS 3.6.15 Beta: Zoomer Edition released

Quoting: KlaasI've switched about a month ago and experienced a partial breakage. No chance booting into game mode, due to an infinite logon spinning wheel, but switching to desktop mode worked reliably. But Steam was completely broken in desktop mode as well. I ended up renaming the Steam folder in $HOME – that fixed the problem. Later I moved back my data from the broken Steam installation to the working one piece by piece.

So the issue I had was not related to hardware at all, but to the Steam client since it is so heavily integrated into SteamOS.
I don't know what to say, I've been on the Beta channel since I got my Steam Deck late last year and I haven't experienced any breakage. Maybe Valve does region-based rollouts?

Quoting: BoldosUnfortunately, SteamDeck betas are crippling the device for me quite often (two times within the past two months so far), making the device unbootable

Recovery through factory reset was required to make it work again...
That's weird, I've never had my Deck be unbootable... I guess even with identical hardware specs and the same software machines can behave differently still.

Pocketpair respond to the Nintendo and Pokemon Company lawsuit for Palworld

Quoting: PenglingI'm surprised this was approved, considering that there's prior-art - the 1994 SNES RPG Robotrek featured robots who were kept in capsules and sent out into battle, for example.
Well, the people who work at the patent office can't know everything, so especially when a large important entity like Nintendo comes along I can well imagine they just do a cursory glance at the application, briefly consider if they know anything that would be an issue with it, and just give the okay.

Anyway, my expectation is that Nintendo isn't going to take it all the way to court, they're probably aiming at an out-of-court settlement and if that doesn't happen they'll probably back off.

GNOME 47 'Denver' released with Accent Colours and various System Enhancements

Quoting: tmtvlAlthough the GNOME keyboard shortcuts feel kinda insane to me: Alt+F2 to show a command runner? Why isn't that Mod4+F2? I need all my non-super shortcuts for editing tasks (e.g. Alt+F2 to put cursors on every instance matching a regular expression), so I don't understand when environments pollute the non-super keyboard shortcuts (for another example: Alt+Tab, which I use to complete variable names).
Is there something stopping those binds from being changed?
Unfortunately, yes (at least, last time I gave GNOME a run): I opened the system settings and went into the keyboard shortcuts settings and changed everything that made no sense, but after that when I was working I still found various key combinations that GNOME intercepted (I believe... Ctrl+F7, which lets me edit the most recently recorded keyboard macro, and maybe other things? I must admit I didn't really keep track of it all), and I couldn't find the shortcuts defined in the keyboard shortcuts system settings. I even tried installing the tweak tool, but it doesn't seem to have a section for keyboard shortcuts, so I just decided to call it quits.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualGNOME takes the good decisions from macOS and cuts out the bad ones.
Last time I had to use OSX (I believe it was Yosemite?) I couldn't find out how to display hidden files in Finder and when I looked it up online the advice was to run a particular command on the CLI, and my reaction was 'dang, that's the joke people always make about us GNU/Linux users'.

Quoting: GuestI have to use a few extensions to hammer some square pegs into round holes but the overall workflow of Gnome is something I can't get close enough to in other environments.

Quoting: basedI still dont know if their interface was meant for touchscreen or a mouse lol :p
To me, keyboard. Gnome feels far better and faster than trying to point and click/poke everything.
What exactly is the GNOME workflow? From what I've seen it's basically what I've got going here in LXQt+awesome: workspaces dedicated to tasks, very keyboard focused, minimal distractions,... with the difference that I can have different workspaces on either of my monitors (so I can have my development workspace on my left monitor and my communications workspace on my right monitor) and switch them independently.
