Editorial: An open letter to Valve on why they should keep on embracing Linux

Quoting: liamdawe
Quoting: jarhead_hQuite frankly I think that if I were Valve reading that I'd be pretty pissed.
Eh? Not sure why you came to that conclusion. I fully agree with BTRE here, especially the point on taking even a 1-2% cut if a developer does a multiplatform game. Not just to help foster Linux games, but to support a healthy developer community to give them just a little more support for branching out.

Have absolutely no clue why you would think Valve would be "pissed".
Easy, isn't it? Saying someone else has to pay a price for your decisions. If you want developers to earn more from making games for you, why don't you just pay more yourself?

System76 reveal the Thelio, their new custom-built Linux desktop with three versions

Quoting: Purple Library GuyMost computer cases are ugly as sin. Just wondering--are you saying it's ugly because of the woodgrain or despite it? Personally, I really think it's past time design in computers got over the whole "We're so hypermodern and futuristic" thing, so the woodgrain is kind of welcome.
The wood grain definitely doesn't help, but I'm mainly talking about the "black monolith with a white button" look. Add some relief, dangit. How do you even open the DVD drive on those things?

And the light wood variant is the most kitschy thing I've seen since the '70s.

I mean, it's ugly as sin, so if I bought one I'd have to buy a proper case as well...

...but I so want a Sys76 with an AMD GPU.

Steam Play thoughts: A Valve game streaming service

Game streaming will never be worthwhile, the video compression just ruins everything.

System76 shared some more details to clear up some questions about their open hardware manufacturing
30 Oct 2018 at 9:47 pm UTC

Announcement: we're releasing an open source PC!

Clarification: well it's technically not completely open source...

...Gee, who could've seen that one coming? Almost like that has happened before.

Egosoft to launch X4: Foundations on November 30th, hopefully with a Linux beta build

All I want is to have the immersive docking mechanics from X2 again, I really missed those in X3. All the other stuff doesn't matter too much for me, I'll just do delivery runs until I can afford my own freighter. I just love piloting a huge ship and letting the computer deal with shooting down any pirates I run across.

Steam Play set to get DXVK 0.72, Wine fixes for .NET and windowing issues
27 Sep 2018 at 12:30 pm UTC

Quoting: lqe5433Wine is only working with X.org, and X.org will be replaced with Wayland really soon, so I don't see the point of this. Games should use SDL2 on Linux, or Wine needs to use Wayland.
Wayland is the main reason I keep a close eye on native releases. As soon as sway reaches 1.0-beta I'm switching full time.

Valve have released some interesting statistics about controller use
27 Sep 2018 at 1:12 am UTC

I've got 3 controllers I switch between depending on the game:
A) My Steam controller, which is my absolute favourite as the haptic touchpad is so much more accurate than a normal analog stick. Being able to use a modifier to repurpose the left touchpad to a number dial is massively handy as well.
B) My PS3 controller which works very well with xboxdrv for certain games (Dark Souls) that have don't pick up SC and have problems with my third controller.
C) My Gioteck VX2, basically a knock-off PS1 dualshock controller with turbo feature, which I pretty much only use in RetroArch.

I don't think I could use an Xbox controller as my hands are pretty symmetrical, one of those asymmetric controllers seems like it would be alien to use.

SC Controller driver and UI version 0.4.5 is out, last release for a while

Yeah, the CoC literally says maintainers can, quote, 'ban temporarily or permanently any contributor for other behaviors that they deem inappropriate, threatening, offensive, or harmful.' As well as: 'Representation of a project may be further defined and clarified by project maintainers.'

I can see how some people might disagree with a text that basically gives maintainers carte blanche to ban whomever they want at any time.
