Quoting: LoftyBut wait, you need this 'exacting' 41+ char number string and sometimes we will even add a 'dash' then a point and a few numbers on the end (oh and also need the right kernal btw.)
I seldomly use git versions, but I think that means that at that commit, (a commit is a code upload, meaning that someone sent code with that hash)...at that commit, the driver looks fine.
this is useful info, for people using the development tree of the driver to switch to that point in time where that commit was uploaded and to have a semi decent experience out of the driver.
As the usual caveat say, "don't try git versions be warned it may eat your hamster" :P , (that's why I say "semi decent" your millage may vary sometimes git versions run games better than the stable ones)
Thank you for a respectable answer

note to self, gits eat hamsters...

Proton Experimental gets upgraded, Forza Horizon 4 playable and Origin Overlay works

just a nit pick here but:

(requires AMD GPU with latest mesa-git drivers (known good mesa-git commit: `899dd8e60a5228c4506400d621ef6b5abfe5e32c`)).
It's probably based on a logical hash of some sort and not a random number. But is it expected for users to stare at such a long and exact number strings for mesa versions ? like could it not be simplified, or is this heresy to even suggest for mesa/AMD users. Isn't there already enough technical babble for new users on Linux using AMD with MESA,AMDGPU,PPA's.
But wait, you need this 'exacting' 41+ char number string and sometimes we will even add a 'dash' then a point and a few numbers on the end (oh and also need the right kernal btw.)

Asking as an nvidia user who simply looks at a version shrugs and goes yup that's driver 460.74 and gets on with their day.

Im going to get schooled shortly on posting this

edit: i did  ^

Piepacker is a new online multiplayer platform for retro gaming

Quoting: RafiLinuxParsec was good but no way to host on Linux. Steam Remote Play is OK but does not work all the time the last time I tried. Hamachi was been more and more difficult to get new ppl get on with. RetroArch's MP is also OK but does not work all the time. I also tried Antstream but did not have the library of games that I own and played all the time when my ppl and I were able to get together.
Pretty much the exact same here.

Steam remote play is a no go for me unless they change how it works, seen as it seemed to to trip up with my (very basic) firewall on both pc and router. Not to mention steam link that now requires the internet to stream locally on your LAN, so that's useless to me also. It would be nice if they opensourced the client and removed the effective DRM.

Retroarch is an amazing application but i find myself not using it as configuration is endless, especially when you trash your distro and find yourself going back to the drawing board (🤭). Retroarch is best on a dedicated machine like a RPi, setup&forget so it's always just pick up and play.. or just buy one of the dozens of those things that are already setup.

Quoting: Liam DaweMore and more of this will come, and in some ways it's probably the eventual future (like it or not). Piepacker are jumping into this now with their idea
So, im not too hyped about cloud streaming for a variety of vaild reasons, but for retro gaming i think it's a neat idea. Not only for the remote multiplayer but for having a platform for saves, achievements and everything ready to go at the touch of a button. And this should actually work for me unlike steam.

(Now, if we could only get reliable cloud streaming of those pesky AAA DRM infested shooters i can't play on Linux via steam, id have all my gaming needs covered

Quoting: Loftyforeign interference ?
What do you call foreign when the subject at hand is Linux kernel development?
Actually a good point. I hadn't thought of it like that.

il stick with my first thought on the matter.

System76 announce COSMIC, their own GNOME-based desktop environment for Pop!_OS

Quoting: randylFor one thing I don't feel like I really have a lot of choice when it comes to Gnome 3. And I don't know how to say this without insulting other DEs, but to me only Gnome and KDE are robust enough to even consider.

I love Fedora but have come to loathe Gnome. I like a lot about what it could offer, but the team and their decisions and need to control their users experience drive me bonkers. I want Gnome to look and behave how I want it to not how they, the Gnome team, want me to. I finally gave up on them because nearly every Gnome update broke Dash to Panel, the extension that let me make my DE look and feel how I like. This is a great development for System 76 users in my opinion. It doesn't solve the Gnome control freak issue for anyone else, but it's good for S76.
I've been waiting for KDE to actually work well with Nvidia, and it's coming along, if not very slowly. Fortunately at work we don't even use desktop environments for the servers. We remote in. I know I could roll Arch and not have to deal with any DE, but I don't want to put that amount of effort into building and maintaining my desktop.
If they are so robust then why (in your words) aren't your preferred choices ready for you to use in the way that you like ?

Robust definition: strong; able to survive being used a lot and not likely to break / synonym sturdy
Is XFCE not sturdy ? MATE is that not sturdy ? they seem quite so. LXQT .. that's a lightweight QT environment and it feels pretty sturdy (what about i3 / Awesome, BSPWM). And cinnamon desktop, well seen as it is default with the much used Linux Mint id say it's pretty sturdy and robust.

Im Not trying to get into a desktop environment war as (that would be dumb) everyone should use what suits them, but the two DE's you mention being the only robust options for yourself are the two in which most people would historically claim are the least robust.

I think it's fair to say that every DE has it's bugs, 'features' and occasional instability. No DE is perfect.

Quoting: Liam Dawemost GNOME apps updated to GNOME 40 but they're sticking with the previous Shell version due to it being a big change

Just as an FYI for anyone testing or running something like Arch which recently got the Gnome 40 update. The much used but out of action 'dash-to-panel' extension has now been forked to Gnome 40. It's still WIP but it appears to work okay 🙂
