So. Here's Valve, trying to break the cycle. [...]
It seems that Microsoft is also trying to break the cycle, seeing the increasing number of people being p*ssed off by Windows 11 (like I was with Windows 10)
Ah, so this is what they wanted to say...! :D

: What do you think about the Steam Deck?

“I'm still waiting to get my hands on a devkit, but from what I've gathered it is running LINUX, so that means all the ports, we've done for the Nintendo Switch (Unavowed, Primordia) will be easily portable to it.
I wonder what he means by that exactly. Is he saying at an OS level they are similar (I don't know what the Switch's OS is based off of) or maybe the various APIs are similar/the same like how Vulkan is available on the Switch or maybe other reasons?
I'd guess the combined experience of putting to Linux as well as to a handheld will help a lot.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyFor me, while I get their point, I think it's shortsighted.
My point (well, in an other thread) is a different one:
Yes, Proton is the crutch that makes Linux gaming walk.
Until now, I don't see it helped native Linux gaming,
but it might - or might not - later on.
But either way, it's still a crutch.
I won't take it 's The Golden FLOSS Solution to the problem.

Quoting: IvancilloI don't like all of this emulation things.

Valve clarifies how they test Native Linux or Proton for Steam Deck

Quoting: headless_cyborgI'm curious about Rise/Shadow of the TR because their Feral native ports are IMO perfect so they should be the way to go.
They're good ports but not perfect. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is still receiving updates that Feral hasn't added. They could go back and update all their games, but it's probably not profitable at this point.

Wine/Proton is an open source solution, while Feral's wrapper was not. Dare I say this is a better solution?
Dare whatever you feel like.

But Wine/Proton is an open source solution... using a proprietary API to run closed source .EXE and .DLL files on Linux.
Which does not sound too great in my ears.

IMHO, it's a "better than mostly nothing", but not a "Wow, FLOSS!"

Quoting: CFWhitmanActually, the one time that I have tried the native port of Tomb Raider (2013) on an NVIDIA card (GTX 1650), it seemed to run fine there for me also (tested near the middle of 2020). I generally would expect the Vulkan based ports to run fine on NVIDIA. I've seen a number of claims about Feral ported games, especially old OpenGL ones, not running correctly on NVIDIA cards, though.
Didn't meet a problem with any Feral port I played, always native, always on Nvidia.

1 week from release, Steam Deck hits well over 640 Playable games

Quoting: BelvarHow is Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order marked as playable when there is still the huge fps drop bug when entering the menu? Do they have a secret unreleased proton version for the steam deck?
How "huge" is it? I'd say e.g. a 10 fps menu(!) sounds playable.

Thanks Liam and James!

I truly believe that even if the amount of players that play on non-Windows systems are significantly less, it doesn't mean we shouldn't support LINUX and OSX, because those players are equal to my eyes and deserve the same amount and support.
I guess this kind of enthusiasm is what we need in our position for native versions. It's a labour of love, not mainly labour for money.

Strangeland's porting was an experiment in terms of, we had little to no time to test it out properly.
I wonder what set the time constraint here?

Thanks to James, I got a decent pile of shame of adventure games (as I'd call it) now, with so little time. :)

The issue surrounds what version they will pick for Deck Verified when games have a Native Linux build.
I'm unsure what the implications of these tests are.

Is it only the compatibility badge?
Unlikely, you would show a game as been fully compatible due to say Proton, but run a different version by default on Steam Deck?!?

Does it define the default being run on Steam Deck?
Well, I guess so.

So, most important:
Do these tests define what is run by default on a normal Linux PC?

Quoting: rustybroomhandleDoes Feral get any money if people buy it now already?
They said they get money as soon as the port is announced.

Optimal for them would be buying from their website, though. You get a Steam key there as well.
*edit* But it's not yet available there.

Tomb Raider's Linux port from Feral Interactive delisted on Steam

Quoting: Cyba.CowboyIt's no big loss... Feral Interactive do horrible ports, and having a low-quality port available for Linux-based operating systems sends the wrong message to new Linux gamers.
The Feral Vulkan ports they have been making for the last couple of years are the best ever made. Proton can't match it. So that statement is pure nonsense.
Bulldust. I have a number of their games and their ports are "average" at best.
When it seems other people have better experiences with the same object, you might try to look if anything could be improved on your side. Of course, bitching around is always a possibility, too...
