F1 2017 released for Linux as Feral Interactive’s first Vulkan-only title, here’s a port report

Quoting: BeamboomThe whole problem here is that we call these releases "ports", when they in fact are "wrapped". Nobody expects a game run in Wine to be on par with Windows performance. We should apply that same expectation on these games.

They are not ported, the source code is not "translated" to run natively. They have had added an extra layer so that they don't NEED to be ported. This is a crucial difference.

And from THAT perspective, these releases are pretty damn impressive. They are like Wine on steroids, with a 100% smooth experience and pretty darn good performance.

They just are NOT ports.
As long as there are no Windows binaries inside - and I never heard of that for Feral ports - you're wrong.
Using a source wrapper is still a port. While WINE uses Windows binaries.

Quoting: 0aTTYou and some others do not understand that not all people have the luxury to use several OS. I just have not the time and I'm very grateful to Feral now and again to get an AAA title for my platform that I have to use. Between 10 or 20% of the time I play maybe, the rest of the day I have to do something else unfortunately. And I need Linux for that. Sometimes I only play 15 minutes in between. I can not boot my entire working environment every time.
I'm glad because I've got the luxury to not use several OS nowadays, thanks to Feral and others.

Thanks!
This might influence my next GPU - and monitor - choice.

Maybe you could write a GoL article about your experiences?

Quoting: EikeIs G-Sync working well under Linux? Last time I looked, the G-Sync requirements mentioned Windows only...
Works great for me. Especially since an update a few months back where some problematic games suddenly started working normally with it as well. It's been in the Linux drivers for three years now, so it must have been a while since you checked.
It's still like this today:

Desktop Requirements:

GPU:

G-SYNC features require an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST GPU or higher.

Driver:

    R340.52 or higher

Operating System:

    Windows 8.1
    Windows 8
    Windows 7

But then, it doesn't even mention Windows 10, so...

I doubt this.

As hardpenguin pointed out below, it's a stunning 90%.

Windows 10

Some people claimed it might have been CS:GO, but PUBG seems more likely:

F1 2017 system requirements for the Linux port have been revealed, NVIDIA & AMD supported

Quoting: aejsmithI would strongly recommend installing newer drivers (384.90), using NVIDIA's own installer if necessary. We have known issues on older drivers.
You've got to be joking, right? Installing drivers... from a website? Not having to deal with that, ever, is one of Linux's greatest joys.
I share this view, and in your situation, I wouls install driver 384.90.2 from Debian experimental.

Quoting: EhvisI just found out that the new NVIDIA 387.22 driver added G-SYNC support to Vulkan. Just in time for the F1 2017 release. Makes you wonder if that is coincidence or whether they were waiting for a Vulkan only game to be released.
