Obsidian: Developing For Linux Was Not Worth It
31 Aug 2015 at 11:27 am UTC Likes: 2

Brennecke went through a surprisingly long list of issues that, even for a veteran studio like Obsidian, proved to make Linux a less and less desirable platform to create games for. Outside of actually learning to develop for Mac and Linux, something that Obsidian had to learn as they went along, there were much more daunting challenges, with fixing bugs being one of the most arduous.
"Fixing bugs was the most work"

Was this the guy's first software project or what?

Fixing bugs is pretty much to be expected to take the longest of all development of a big software project, and that's not anyhow specific to Linux or any other platform in particular.

Arma 3 Public Linux Beta Soon, Being Used As An Evaluation

The way I am reading it, it sounds like that if this beta doesn't work out too well they will do a different (hopefully native) port instead (but obviously much later), but maybe I am just optimistic.

The New Starbound Update Has Arrived With A Great Trailer, Huge Update
25 Aug 2015 at 4:10 pm UTC

Quoting: wolfyrionSo we have Terraria , Starbound, Crea... anything else :o ?

All seems the same to me :S:

Now which one you suggest to play?
Starbound is a much much deeper, more complex game, but it's nowhere near gold-released, which people don't get. What you can play is just basically still alpha, not feature complete, not properly balanced, not done. You can go and play but you have to expect the game will feel unfinished, because it is.

Meanwhile Terraria is confined to much smaller scope and it's very simple in comparison, but quite "done", filed out, neatly packed and ready. They still make updates but the game is already a coherent, relatively balanced experience.

So, if you want a honest opinion for what's best to do - play Terraria right now, and wait for Starbound to be truly finished, regardless of how many years it could still take.

I'd definitely like to see proof of that, along with your specs, posted on the forum.

Regarding Feral's status as a good/bad porter, as you said, it's all relative. Some people are satisfied with performance lower than they'd get on Windows. Others aren't. And obviously, Nvidia users will be happier with them than AMD. It's all about your perspective and your expectations.
I don't mean to oppose you or anything but could you provide any examples of game ports where the Linux port performs significantly (not few percent points that are well within margin of influence of different background system load) better than on Windows?

As far as I know, lower Linux performance is to some degree inherent to the lower quality drivers (including the Nvidia binary ones) as well as to quirks of OpenGL itself. This all will hopefully be remedied by VULKAN but for now I feel like it's a tad unfair to blame game porters for Linux performance being somewhat worse (of course, significant performance drop or any instability shouldn't be excused).

Lol, nope. This is the worst porter ever.
I haven't seen any but great ports from Feral, mind elaborating on what makes you say that?

Mercenary Kings Now Available On Linux And A Few First Thoughts On the Game
22 Jul 2015 at 7:40 am UTC Likes: 1

Instantly bought, I have been really wishing for this game to have a Linux port.

In a way it's kinda sad they decided to specifically release their Linux port inside of a zero dollar tier of a Humble Indie Bundle, on top of that one that doesn't really have any Linux games in the higher tiers.

I myself overcame the urge to just nab it for a single $1 and got it for $10, but almost all Linux users who want that game will do exactly that, and the Linux sales of the game will look very bleak again.

When game is put into zero dollar HiB tier, it's sales are pretty much over, I am afraid.

Shadow Warrior 2 Announced, Seems to Be Getting a Linux port
11 Jun 2015 at 4:28 pm UTC

Quoting: rea987So, that is a sequel of original Shadow Warrior. Why the hack did they not name 2013 prequel differently then?
I don't the 2013 Shadow Warrior is a prequel, it's more of a reboot and this is a sequel to it.

The Steam Hardware Survey For May Is Here, It’s Not All Doom & Gloom
3 Jun 2015 at 9:43 am UTC

Quoting: subI hope rumours are not true that Newell just came up with Linux/SteamOS/SteamMachines to put pressure on Microsoft.
As Win10 seems like it will get good reception and "lacks" all the stuff Newell was afraid of, some people argue Valve might abandon Linux sooner or later. After all, SteamMachines missed the fantastic "Win8" time window to take off - and that sounds reasonable to me. :/
I kind of doubt Valve would just ditch it due to their investment in Vulkan.

And as long as Microsoft has it's own app store, they are still a monetary threat to Valve, and afaik Windows 10 still has an (albeit optional) app store.

The Steam Hardware Survey For May Is Here, It’s Not All Doom & Gloom

I wish Steam had a statistic of the sum of people running it on the various platforms at any given time, and how many of them are playing games.

For me, the survey only seems to happen when I am installing steam, and I usually just skip it, and I am pretty sure so will a plenty of other Linux users.
