What Subset Games (FTL, Into the Breach) think of Valve's Steam Play

Some interesting thoughts here, people. Thanks for the kind words. I had hoped to write a little summary for GOL readers as I usually do, but unfortunately, I've been absolutely swamped (with working on games that support Linux directly, for whatever that's worth ^_^).

I see some concerns about my perspective that it's healthier for the Linux userbase to grow organically and slowly. It's fair to have different perspectives, but I'm disappointed by the assumption that I'm being cavalier rather than considered here.

FWIW, I consider the growth we've had over the past 5 years to be notable and positive. By many measures, that in itself can be considered a "success." I look forward to a world where Linux is the dominant desktop platform across the world, but I'm also in no rush to get there. I feel that there's more room for a positive future from grass roots driven growth (which I spend a huge amount of effort on) than most alternatives, and the other nice thing is that barring any crazy shifts in copyright perception/law that threaten F/OSS licences, Linux, BSD, and other F/OSS licences will by nature outlast their proprietary competitors.

Beyond that, unsustainable growth in any domain is typically unhealthy. Bubbles suck. We don't need one here, and we certainly shouldn't see one as essential to the survival of our platform - if any perception in this is naively dangerous, it's that one. As I said in the article, big influxes really aren't a great thing to specifically strive for.

In my eyes, it's naive to view this metaphorical race as a sprint that we can afford to exhaust ourselves in instead of a marathon that we can't.

Also, "who're" is totally an acceptable contraction :D

Quoting: Werner"Proton is Steam client only and thus it's not ideal for general use or for the long-term."

Proton is not Steam only or did i miss here something, you can use proton without steam, but most of the time it doesn't make sense to do so, because wine + dxvk,...... does the same.
And who said that others are not allowed to use proton in there projects, i couldn't find anything which says only steam is allowed to use proton. But maybe i am totally wrong here :)
It is possible to build Proton yourself and/or run it outside of Steam. Whether distros decide to package it, and whether other distribution platforms decide to ship it remains to be seen.

The same goes for the "Steam Runtime," and maybe here's another point that the ups and downs of names come into play. If the SR had been called something else, would more distros have shipped their own metapackages that made distro-specific versions of those libraries available? I often wonder whether that was the initial intention behind the SR and Valve's approach toward allowing/encouraging distro-specific packaging of the Steam client.

I forgot about that question! At least we have Jedi Outcast [External Link] now via a source port :)

Hand of Fate 2's big combat overhaul is now out and it's damn fine

Don't forget that this update also includes a new faction for endless mode, the tree-like Briarfolk (full patch notes on non-combat related changes can be found here [External Link].

This stuff is also related to the exciting modding things we mentioned in the previous announcement for this patch (covered on GOL here. We (I work with Defiant from time to time) just updated the SDK to work with Unity 2017.4.2f2, which has an editor build available for Linux [External Link].

It'd be really awesome to see more Linux based modders out there, and I'd be happy to spend some time showing anybody interested the ropes. For anybody keen to get into the community, myself and other developers can be found in the HoF Discord thingy [External Link] along with a few other modders.

Hope everybody enjoys the update!

I helped test this one a little bit before it came out. Looking forward to playing with my fellow Linux users in the future when I have more time to play :D

Thanks to all of the site's editors past and present, as well as the community for helping being passionate about Linux and gaming on Linux.

Here's to 9 more years! :D

Does this coincide with the frame rate drops you've experienced? I've not seen that happen with the release build or any of the pre-release builds so far - I think I've sunk maybe 15 - 20 hours in all up.

If you crank all the settings down, does that make a difference (turning off AO and AA if you haven't already will probably give you big gains)?

If there are specific places in specific levels where you're noticing significant frame rate drops? If so, it might be worth reporting these so that Revival can combine them with other reports when considering future performance optimisations.

Quoting: slaapliedjeSweet! Anyone test the Saitek X52 Pro and/or a Vive with it? Pretty sure this one had VR support...
This is the first build of the game to use a version of Unity that has VR support on Linux. I haven't had time to unpack my Vive and check whether it's enabled/works or not yet though.

Super happy to have backed this one on Kickstarter and to have helped Revival get their initial Linux builds tested!

The new cutscenes and voice overs in the release build are adding a lot more to the game/atmosphere than I expected :D

I have too long a backlog, but this definitely looks like it will scratch the Elite Dangerous flying itch I've been having... Anyone played both Elite Dangerous and this? Specifically the flying, how does it compare?
Everspace is more a FPS than a spaceship simulator when it comes to the "flying system" (keyboard inputs are more than less similar to those of a classic FPS, and that's why mouse + keyboard is more recommended than a controller) which may be disturbing if you expect "realism". :)
Yeah. It's definitely more Descent than Freespace. The mouse cursor aiming mechanic reminds me of Freelancer a little but, but you've still got 6DOF controls without inertia being particularly important (FWIW, I play with cockpit view and the cursor locked to the centre of the screen and find that a bit more enjoyable).
