2D racer 'Race Online' to get dedicated servers and release date announced

The familiar set of cars, custom tracks, a Finnish developer... Okay this is basically Slicks & Slide online, down to the last detail. And that's awesome! I spent so much time playing Slicks & Slide with my friends back in high school. Can't believe that was twenty plus years ago. :dizzy:

I hope this is half as fun as good old Slicks, and if it is, that GOL dedicated server would be awesome!

Just in case you're serious, all of the "pro-windows" commenters in this thread are joking.

Quoting: Guest"why one should buy one of that games, when he can play tons of similar abandonware."
Really, should i?
You never buy games that are similar in style to ones you've played and liked before?

Quoting: LinasIt's been a while since I bought a PC, but most shops would gladly assemble the machine for you.
I see people say stuff like this a lot. I have lived all over the US and I have never once seen any specialty store that sells components. My options are always big box stores like Best Buy or online shopping. Where do you people live that has stores dedicated to building machines?
We've got a few smaller stores in even my tiny home town in Finland that sell both components and brandname computers. Most of them will assemble your box and even install your OS (well, Windows) for a fee of about 40-50 euros max. And even our largest national on-line retailers will assemble your machine and deliver it that way if you pay for the service. I know this is true in many other European countries as well.

I guess US consumers might be more used to buying branded computers, which might explain why Apple does so much better there. Or maybe it's the other way around.

Quoting: tmtvlI should get myself a gaming rig, but it's hard to find Linux machines with a decent AMD GPU. I can't put one together myself, 'cause I always mess up putting the CPU on the motherboard and end up wrecking everything.
Can you get one without a dedicated gpu? Then you'd only need to install the gpu yourself.

Quoting: tommystig21It would be cool to have an option for a second or third PC, like myself i have my desktop system with solus and another different desktop with steamOS, not counting various laptops.
AFAICT the point of the survey is to gather data about our primary Linux gaming machines. Just pick the Linux setup you mostly play your games on. The others are not important in this context. Feel free to brag about them in the forums though. :)

Seriously? And here I was wondering if I should wishlist the game or not due to the generated levels. Silly me, of course I will!

AMD have announced 'Anvil', an MIT-licensed wrapper library for Vulkan

Quoting: giamicDoes this mean that programming with Vulkan + anvil will reintroduce some of the overhead that one abandons when dropping openGL?
Not really. Anvil is not a higher level API that completely abstracts away Vulkan, but basically a set of tools and helpers that make debugging easier and reduce the need to write your own boilerplate. Using AMD's Anvil or Nvidia's VkHLF or indeed any of the available helper libraries [External Link] will still allow you to thread your workloads effectively and do all kinds of things OpenGL makes difficult.

Also keep in mind that it's entirely possible to write Vulkan code that performs worse than OpenGL. Vulkan is hard. These libraries make it more accessible.

EDIT: I tried to resist fixing that minor typo but I'm weak.
