Quoting: EikeI got severe mouse (and keyboard, it seems) lag. System is strong enough. Tried lower resolution, 60 Hertz, Vsync on and off, fullscreen on and off. Anybody got an idea?
Did you try disabling AA and/or SSAO in game? I remember one or the other resulting in sluggish input in certain Unity games. Although that was back when my system was quite a bit weaker than yours. I guess you could try switching off your compositor as well.

WindowsCodecs and QCap libraries converted to PE.
All of then?
I think this means the Wine implementations of windowscodecs.dll and qcap.dll. Not all codec libraries ever released on Windows, if that's what you're asking.

Quoting: slaapliedjeWith AMD you will always be chasing the latest mesa libs or kernel, because distrubutions don't chase AMD.
That sounds so dramatic, until you realise that on many popular distributions "chasing" means adding a repo and letting your update manager handle the rest. On rolling distros like Arch you're already running the latest and greatest so you're pretty much good to go. I'm on Mint, but I certainly don't spend any more time "chasing libs" than I spent chasing new Nvidia drivers back when I owned their hardware.

Quoting: slaapliedjeThe open source ones tsnd to not perform as well, as noted earlier in this thread.
That's not generally true for AMD these days, according to benchmarks. There are exceptions of course, but gamers are usually better off with Mesa.

Personally I switched from AMD/ATI to Nvidia about 15 years ago, when fglrx was making my life miserable. But I don't see a reason to pick a camp and stick with it. No hardware vendor has earned my undying loyalty.

I've had less issues since I switched back to AMD after a few Nvidia GPUs that mostly just worked and that's enough to keep me here for now. Being dependent on one less proprietary piece of software is also nice.

Quoting: denyasisOn a side note, I'm all for compatibility, even if it is with a platform. I seriously would switch to Linux at my work if I could replace my SQL management programs and our GIS program.
Don't know about your GIS program, but DBeaver [External Link] does the job for me on the SQL front. And I think one co-worker runs HeidiSQL on top of Wine for some reason.

I had to install the newer v4l2loopback packages from Ubuntu 20.10 to fix the dkms build on 5.9 kernels on Mint, but otherwise the driver seems to work without issue. Didn't try OBS though. Just wanted to see if this works.

Quoting: scaineMy Sapphire 5700XT is super quiet.
Thank you very much! May I please ask which Sapphire model that is? I've seen the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5700 XT (as well as the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5700 XT BE version), as well as the Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 5700 XT (also in ... BE and ... SE versions, it seems).
The BE versions seem to be smaller cards with smaller heat sinks and lower boost clocks, so I'd steer clear of those. Nitro+ is the flagship (and the SE is a "special edition" with some fancy RGB leds and higher overclocks), but I'd argue that the Pulse will give you better value for money.

Quoting: LightkeyIf you look at the Phoronix results, you will notice that the Radeon 5700 XT is far slower than it is on Windows, relative to NVidia's cards.
Is it though? Haven't looked into these recently (haven't been on the market for new hardware) but Phoronix tests seemed to put the 5700 XT around the level of an RTX 2070 (non-Super), and seems like reliable testing sites like Tomshardware give it similar relative figures on Windows. This depends on the benchmark of course, as native Linux ports and games running on proton might have different quirks on AMD and Nvidia hardware than they do on Windows. I definitely can't see the "far slower" part.

Quoting: 14I like the MSI coolers though, because the fans turn off when the card is cool enough. My PC is very quiet when I'm not gaming or compiling.
It's not only MSI though. My Sapphire's fans aren't turning right now, and I've seen ASUS advertise the same feature. But yeah, it's nice.
Did you have to do anything special to get it to work, or was that the default behavior? I had to write a script and turn it into a systemd timer for my fans to turn off :(
No, I haven't done anything. This is default hardware behaviour.

The fans seem to start spinning at 60℃, and stop again when GPU temperature falls below 50℃. I can't actually hear the fans starting up from where I normally sit, but I checked using hw sensors. I'm using the default "performance" bios, not the "silent" option.
