RimWorld alpha 16 'Wanderlust' is a massive update

"Wanderlust" .. always feels awkward to see german words used in other languages that you dont ever hear in germany. Is Wanderlust somehow part of english vocabulary now, like kindergarden?

An interview with Gallium Nine project developer Axel Davy

would be cool if someone writes an article about what to actually install and combine to max out gpu performance for each vendor.
so far all i ever did was a) install the binary if nvidia b) do nothing - aka use radeon - if amd.
and now i always something about mesa and gallium and how they improve this and that without me having any clue about what to do.

GOL Cast: Fragging Bots And Testing New Maps In Xonotic

Quoting: ElectricPrismIThey really should release this on Steam as FreeToPlay, it would significantly help them to have a distribution mechanism keeping all users at the latest version automatically.
they basically said they cant. maybe they will at somepoint but right now its not possible due to ressources to tinker the game into the steam framework and they would have to let go of xenostats in favour of steamstats, which after they put so much effort into it is no good option (plus inferious in their eyes, as far as i understood)

but yes, either this going to steam and building up a community or the game is pretty much at a dead end. it got quite some focus when one of the best movie makers of QL moved over in 2012 and advertised it within the quake community, but its slowly dying ever since.

xonotic (going to steam) or reflex (going for linux native) are pretty much the only hopes for arena shooters on linux right now. i know, i know.. theres unreal tournament. but i hate the clonky movement so ill just pretent it doesnt even exist :D

The Palit GeForce GTX970 Jetstream 4GB Is A Monster

Quoting: BeamboomAlso, a framerate of 160?! What kind of screen have you got to handle that high refresh rate? Or are not refresh rate and fps related?
Yep, they are not related. the refreshrate of your monitor and the frames per seconds your PC can pull oft are 2 entirely different things that by default dont affect each other at all.
Now there is vsync, a GPU feature that delays and caps fps to your monitors hz to force it to display 1 full frame each refresh (the effect that happens without vsync is called tearing). vsync however has major drawbacks - it adds a segnificant amount oft input lag and decreases fps just by itself. Plus if your rig cannot handle a stable 1:1 fps to Hz ratio (120fps in your case) then the input lag gets even worse.

if you own a 120 or 144hz monitor then just disable vsync completly as tearing is not much of an issue on those monitors. also dont cap your fps, as higher fps will always(!) improve your game, even if its just input lag. (and if for some reason you have to cap, pick 120)

Banished Survival & City Building Sim Is Being Ported To Linux
11 Jan 2015 at 4:13 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestLooks (and sounds) really nice, but is there any goal?
no theres not. other than "survive the winter" its more or less sandbox where you just set your goals yourself aka "have more than X people in your village". as a result when playing Banished one is super motivated at first and then looses all of that the moment the basic mechanics (aka how much food do my people need, how fast should population grow) are understood.

its not a bad game at all, but its only good for a couple of hours and after that you will prolly never touch it again. what it really lacks is some kind of story, characters, growing challenges or even combat (wildlife attacking the village or whatever). Banished feels like an extremly solid base for what could be an awesome game but sadly it isnt one by itself.

Legend Of Grimrock 2 On Linux Is Uncertain
23 Nov 2014 at 4:28 pm UTC

loved grimrock, never finished it tho.

why? quite at the end theres a secret that requires you to use multiple items.. some of which you very likely trashed hours earlier (like throwing stones). that single thing made me ragequit the whole game, as i was so upset about the possible loot that i was going to never see - because of the _worst_design_flaw_ever :P
