Steam Play Proton 4.11-3 is out, big changes for gamepads and new D9VK
27 Aug 2019 at 10:41 am UTC Likes: 5

Nice, I grew tired updating the prefixes manually with -master versions of D9VK since the last release was quite some time ago and there were a lot of improvements in D9VK.

Didn't expect Valve to push a new release out that fast. But well - it's probably why there was a D9VK release just in time before the new Proton release.

Quoting: ShmerlSo when is it going to be merged back into dxvk?
Will be done. There have been discussions on that already. I think once they consider D9VK feature complete that's when it will happen. It's not feature complete yet.

Yey, my 3 repoted bugs (ground texture, fixed fog functions and dirty distance view) made it in there! Very pleased! Besides some lightning issues we (he) solved. I just reported :-).

Grats Josh, impressive work as always!

Strength Of The SWORD ULTIMATE no longer coming to Linux after the successful Kickstarter

I'm surprised they released at all. Congrats for that to them.

They're not the only one who miscalculate, and even with way larger teams that happens. Shouldn't happen, but happens.

I've funded them with 10 $, which isn't too much afterall. I'll try to get it running on wine/dxvk (currently boreked according to protondb, which isn't really surprising since they use a home grown engine), and if I get it working properly won't refund.

I'm not really somebody who requires a native version, but it would have been nice to have it tested/working with wine. Afterall, I am spending quite some time playing with wine, even some games which do have native versions since they just run better in wine with dxvk/d9vk than the native versions do.

Loved that Game back in the game. Would have loved if they released both, Commandos 1 + addon and Commandos 2

KDE has an unpatched security issue that's been made public

Hmh, not a bug, a design flaw. Things like that happen, they implemented some requirement for running shell extensions and forgot the possible security implication if it runs unnoticed.

I remember a similar discussion by the KDE team actually in another topic, where they caught that thing before they released it and changed it before.

Things like that happen, and it will be fixed in no time, of that I'm sure.

A three-way look at Rocket League on Linux, with D9VK versus Linux Native

I reported a bug for WoW 1.12 client recently on D9VK. Took the devs less than 20 days to fix it, which was very unexpected that they'll get that done in such a little time frame. And the communication was very pleasant, they got a good team up there.

That said, I had to drop to gallium nine for that one before, "native" wine just couldn't handle the performance. That said, D9VK actually outperforms gallium nine by leagues.

Not all seems to be yet implemented (lightning stuff seems to be still work in progress), but it's very damn promising, even if they still have quite some way to go.

I think with D9VK, DXVK, VKD3D and Wine/Proton really pushing forward there, we're looking in a better future. Yes, it's not native, but if the result is that good and it gives a cheaper way porting over, why not? They can even bundle that up.

Lately ran into an issue with Far Cry 3, but that was fixed with DXVK 1.3.x too.

I'm amazed by the recent improvements on all the wine / proton / dxvk / d9vk side. Where I had trouble getting a lot of the games just running, going out of my way to patch up wine prefixes etc., it now just works for a lot of those (a lot of games still face issues in wine and proton though, but then, wine / proton are showing a good pace and a lot of bugs fixed every few weeks).

I was always a person not wanting to use wine for gaming, since performance issues and having to basically fix up every game to get it properly running was annoying. Happy to see that becoming better and with all the technological advances the experience is a lot better now.

Steam Play Proton 4.11 released, a pretty huge release pulling in D9VK and a replacement for esync

Funding D9VK was a logical step considering the progress done, and DXVK devs actually participating already hinted to an increased involvement / checking project viability. I'm happy for Josh, not knowing about contract details I hope he finishes his education and has this as a summer job.

I'm sure that guy will make his way, which ever path he chooses, but finishing education certainly wouldn't hurt. Very skilled youth with a lot of passion.

He deserves it. More than that, I appreciate the work he does, and I appreciate Valve for recognizing that his work is worth funding. We all knew that for quite some time. I hope they understand his age and keep a balance with his education and work.

Thanks Josh first of all, incredible things you've done, can't thank you enough, and thanks Valve for recognizing and funding.

Ubisoft and Epic Games are now supporting Blender development
22 Jul 2019 at 11:26 pm UTC Likes: 3

Quoting: WendigoI wish they'd use the money for the new game engine. (just dreaming)
No, we have a very good open source game engine.

The money is placed where it should be. Blender is an excellent free 3D animation project, and funding to improve it is exactly where the money should land. I'm glad the two companies, even though I can't find a reason and it's very unexpected, I appreciate the support those Ubisoft and Epic are showing.

I'm sure there is interest behind that and not just gratitude, but that said - the more sponsoring we can get for projects like this, making and keeping the tooling for game development free, the better. There is some interest behind that, but it could be as little as making tooling more accessible to startup game studios. We don't know. It does not matter. We got funding for a great project (which I personally never donated to - not a designer :p).

Congrats, Blender!

Interesting, Philip Rebohle apparently is starting to do some work on d9vk on the performance side of things. That's new (to me).
