AMD could be back in the CPU performance game with Zen
14 March 2016 at 8:53 am UTC

My gaming rig is now 3 years old, but since it still runs a GTX770, I don't have plans to replace it just too soon (most titles run "good enough" for my taste, so I'm planning to give my rig until christmas).

I really hope Zen, new graphics drivers and a now faster evolving mesa will shake it up a bit. Though, I don't get my hopes up too much, but I'm willing to give them a shot again on my next buy if things improve.

Croteam releases Serious Engine version 1.10 as free software

Pretty well structured, porting to SDL2 should be not be too painful (input/sound). For Networking they seem to use normal sockets, as far as I found out now it's just to port in Sources/Engine/GameAgent/GameAgent.cpp (recvfrom) and Sources/Engine/Network/CommunicationInterface.cpp (seems to be the base communication interface implementing windows sockets).

Ubuntu 16.04 dropping the AMD Catalyst/fglrx driver

Sad to say, but AMD presents itself here very badly. Out of support drivers, new ones (open source at least) without good enough support for the hardware.

For others mentioning the intel drivers and "refreshing" kernel approach, it's partly refreshing, partly a pain, especially while they're undergoing heavy changes as they do now with the atomic state handling (for quite some time already) and the legacy code (update/disable hooks). We're talking about a year ago, and it's still not done (yet), and won't be done some time in the future, causing major pain on intel drivers. AMD is undergoing a similar change, basically completely rewriting their drivers, which is most likely what the Intel guys have been doing the past year(s) - or try to do.

The chips are very complicated, and so are the drivers. The base architecture of the drivers sometimes proves to be an issue for future development for modern chips.

Either NVidia had the right driver design, or they put a load on manpower/money on that issue to get it done very early maybe pursuing the goal of providing super computers with nvidia chips. They got themselves quite an advantage over their competitors by that, even only providing proprietary drivers.

IndieGameStand blog post on Steam key reselling, plus my thoughts

Well, I don't use other stores than Steam [at all]. Not because Steam is so cheap, but I like to have my games in one place and support the company and game developers trying hard and investing money to push linux gaming a bit forward.

Well, not saying I never buy on steam sale (some titles are in my feeling too expensive for what I expect of them), but there I'm pretty confident the developers agreed to the sale and at least get the money.

DiRT Rally also looks like it's coming to SteamOS & Linux

GRID is great, but this title would be awsome. I prefer rally titles over "normal" racing games. Sad my wheel turned out to be broken... if this comes to Linux I'll have to get myself a new one.

Nvidia release another new Vulkan beta driver with Linux support

I'm getting more and more confident that they're serious about pushing Vulkan.

I really like their efforts.

Microsoft's latest tactics show Gabe Newell of Valve was right to worry

Well... it could be a reaction on the other ones going for cross-playing (PS4 with streaming, Steam with buy once play everywhere).

But it's for sure they'll make their moves. Step by step, until there is no turning back.

What game would you most like to see on Linux this year?

Valve will be at GDC talking about Practical Development for Vulkan
28 February 2016 at 11:20 pm UTC

Quoting: vulturecolor me blind here, but what is Unity guy doing here talking about practical use?

as far as it was told not so long ago, they haven't even started it. Epic on the other hand is demoing working Vulkan in Unreal for S7

Unity did an Android Vulkan talk a few month back. It was a pretty good one despite the technical issues they obviously had with screening the android device :D. And my guess is a lot of game devs for mobile are looking into Vulkan as Google named it their future API (for "more performance for their games by the engine"). Actually, Unity were one of the first actively trying Vulkan. They didn't announce anything official (to my knowledge) yet, but they're certainly brewing something. Otherwhise they wouldn't have been able to show a live Vulkan a few month ago.

Dean Sekulic | Old Programmer, Croteam

Old programmer? I thought he was doing Engine & Tools for The Talos Principle. And he ain't that old :D... did Dean leave Croteam or is that yet another Croteam-Like joke and it's meant "Senior Programmer" :D.

I'm sure he will laugh about that :D.

Those three guys are for sure a good pick for a talk like this. Looking forward to it. Hoped for some words of Epic about this topic too.... but hey, they probably won't have time to let every engine developer talk about it :D.
