Prefixer is a modern alternative to Protontricks that's faster and simpler

Honestly it's about time, and whomever ends up creating the graphical wrapper of this will be a boon to the community as well. Protontricks/Winetricks is a friction point to the ecosystem just because of their less than intuitive interface and the weird silent pauses and slowdowns that make you wonder if it's working or not. If a game needs tweaks from Winetricks, having something fast and smooth like this is huuuuuge.

Quoting: CyrilWhat is "silly" is what they did to Overwatch (the first one). I think I will never understand that move.
And about Blizzard as a whole, where is Warcraft IV? WoW II? Starcraft III?
You won't be getting a Warcraft IV ever; that's what World of Warcraft was/is.
But... it's not, WoW isn't an RTS and never will. We can't reduce a game solely on its lore, it's bullshit.
Don't you think it's sad?
We shouldn't be able to just reduce a game to its lore, but as is, that's what Blizzard has done. World of Warcraft is doing better than any singular Warcraft game did, so they aren't incentivized to go and do another. And the Warcraft team is basically wholly focused on WoW (and occasionally Hearthstone, but that's firmly intrenched in the "tangentially related" category).

A Starcraft 3 is more likely as an RTS entry, in this day and age. Especially with Microsoft as their overlords and breathing down their necks.

Talking point - what have you been playing lately?

It's been a lot of getting stuff working on my Steam Deck in recent weeks, as my laptop is now on the fritz. So I've got:

* Guild Wars 2
* Serious Sam 2 & 4
* Elite: Dangerous
* X4: Foundations (this one surprised me; the secret is apparently disabling Volumetric Fog?)
* Factorio (I keep bouncing off it and keep trying anyway)
* Stardew Valley
* Starsector

I can't seem to sit on one game for very long at this time of year. But at least they're all working to my liking!

Fedora Linux 43 has officially arrived

And STILL people are freaking out about it. For like... no reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They should be freaking out because we shouldn’t be allowing it at all. Beyond the ethical and legal implications for an open source project, there’s also the outsized environmental impact of every single prompt because of the data centers required to host these LLMs. It’s not good.

I hope Valve are watching closely with Microsoft working towards an Xbox Handheld
12 Mar 2025 at 12:25 pm UTC

This definitely reads as alarmist. Remember that Linux is once again less than 2% of the total userbase on Steam, and yet Valve made a Linux Handheld and continue to invest money into making Linux gaming better. Microsoft making a better Windows handheld experience isn't going to detract from what Valve has already done, or will continue to do, because they aren't trying to win a console war. They don't NEED to, everyone who's PC gaming already has a Steam library. "You can't play your Steam games without additional effort" is friction that's going to make adoption more difficult.

Besides, a partner-launched Windows handheld isn't going to be able to compete with the Deck on price. And it won't until an actual Xbox handheld is launched by Microsoft themselves, where they can hedge the price on getting more games bought on their platform, just like an Xbox.

KDE Plasma 6.3 will have much better fractional scaling

Now if I could just get Nvidia to fix the horrific external monitor performance in Nvidia hybrid laptops, so I can go back to using KDE with Wayland.
