Oh, and I forgot to mention the whole Witcher 2 situation. :D But I guess nothing needs to be said about that.

I will join the guy who was dissing the XCOM port. The minimum requirements for the XCOM port are significantly higher on the linux version. They did not test (like, at all) the game with graphics cards that fit the windows requirements, leading to the game having a crash to desktop bug on the build facility screen which made it unplayable. When people brought this up after release, they claimed it was due to a driver problem and washed their hands of it, saying we should just wait for a driver update from Nvidia. On Archlinux, the update came months later. People who got this for non-bleeding edge distros and who do not have the technical ability to use ppas to get the latest drivers must not have been very happy... I understand that they can't control Nvidia, but testing the game before release would have brought this to their attention earlier.
To this day, the menus have huge bugs. They are very, very slow, but at least they don't crash to desktop anymore. Except there are other situations which can lead to unavoidable CTD, completely ruining your game unless you can finish your mission in windows... The game also gets massively slower if you have too many save files. And it frequently drops frames.
This is all stuff that's happened to me and to others.
If you had a computer built with the most recent cards, then I guess it was fine. But otherwise, it was not a good port. Certainly not the equal of the windows version, which worked flawlessly on my computer. I was not a happy customer when I bought this. In fact, I think I made my first post here to blast the port. I will be very skeptical of their future ports.
Similarly, it took months before Civ5 got some graphical updates to make it closer to the windows version. At least, it was completely playable before then, so I guess we should give Aspyr credit. Still, it was not as good of an experience as windows.
And let's not forget the articles which demonstrated that pretty much all linux games have lower fps (one of which the blog author links at the beginning of his post).
The whole "valve is dropping steamOS" angle is a bit ridiculous, but otherwise the guy has a point. The big games that have come to linux do not run as well as in windows, that's pretty much unarguable.

We have way too many of these articles these days. I guess we can't blame ourselves for this one since linux gamers were pretty naive still in 2011. :p
We need to establish the first two rules of linux gaming:
Rule 1: You do not buy games before the linux version is out.
Rule 2: You do not buy games before the linux version is out.
That way if we get another one of these articles, we can call out people on not respecting rules 1 and 2. :p

Just a warning people: Risk of Rain seems to be a pretty unstable game. The latest patch claims that it now fully recognizes controllers using xinput, yet my Logitech F710 does not work. Also, I started a game and my character was invisible and always shooting upward. I was incapable of controlling him. Needless to say, that's not a great first impression. If you're buying the bundle for this game, I'd check the steam forums first.

Also, as someone else estimated, it couldn't have taken more than 10000$ to make the linux port happen, unless their code is really terrible. If they started the campaign asking for 150000$ and got much more, surely they could have used some of the extra money for the port rather than adding some new animation somewhere?
It probably shows through my posts but I am deeply suspicious of companies who use kickstarter or steam's early access model. I don't see how it's that different from the pre-order systems that AAA companies use, and that one gets a lot of flak. Cases like this one are why. There haven't been big lawsuits yet on the back of failed kickstarters (to my knowledge), so we're swimming in a sea of uncertainty as to what obligation these developpers actually have to fulfill their promises.
I'll let others fund these projects. If they ask me why, I'll point to this game.

Quoting: TiZFirst of all: the IGG fundraiser was originally going to create content for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The Windows port was paid for by Marvelous AQL through taking cuts of the initial sales (that is, sales outside of the backers for the fundraiser), and they did the port. If they couldn't fund development for Windows through the IGG, then why would they be able to fund development for Linux with it?That's irrelevant. We are not their financial planners. If they didn't have what it takes to make the port, they shouldn't have promised it.

Very interesting how the guy keeps apologizing for the "miscommunication". As others have pointed it, it was 100% clear to everyone else that the linux version was a reward for backing the campaign (and so, would be made possible with that money). Clearly, the inclusion of a linux version was used to generate interest.
If you think literaly everyone else misunderstood you, fine, but now you have to deliver. Even if it weren't your intention to do misleading avertising, that's exactly what you did. I hope you're at least refunding all the people who expected a linux release...
Considering the large surplus the campaign did, you hade ample opportunity to correct your mistake. Whether it was miscommunication or not is irrelevant.
As liam said: this is why you don't part with your money until the linux version is out. Which in this case, is probably a few years from now, if ever.

Mojang Releases Roadmap For Scrolls, Still No Sign Of Linux

I bought CS:GO while it was on sale, expecting it to be ported quickly. Never again. In this case, since it's Valve we are talking about, I'm sure a port will come eventually, but it would have felt much better to buy it as it released. The linux port is bound to release with a sale anyway. That's the issue with Valve's structure: people can do whatever they want. Who's working on that port?
I think the "promised linux port never materialises" issue might be quite a problem with indies. They have lots of priorities and little manpower, so I guess we're easier to put off until later. There is no way that two years wasn't enough to port Scrolls. They just haven't worked on it. Or they've been working on it on and off.
I'm kinda disappointed with the performance of Xcom's port, but still, I think companies who specialize in porting to linux might be our best bet. You know that these guys will be 100% focused on getting the job done.

The last video they showed to compare the graphis really did not make the Redux version look good. It was so much more generic, much less grittier than the original.
