What's the deal with the Metro games? Do they run better with proton or something?

Just over a year after the last main release, Wine 4.0 is officially here

I was going to make a pun, but I thought it would be in pour taste.
It's getting to a point where I read the Wine articles for these puns instead of the development updates.

Valve have detailed some changes coming to Steam in an overview post

Overhaul to library would be great. So easy to forget about games and impossible to keep them organized. It's like the 5th time now that my categories have been wiped, so just given up on that.

The Grim Legends series from Artifex Mundi can now be found on GOG

Quoting: nullzeroI kind of happen to have one of those games lingering on the steam account from a bundle and for the first time, after reading your review Liam, I am actually am tempeted to play it.

Maybe it's one of those "don't judge the book by it's cover" scenarios.

They're really a great deal of fun, they're a guilty pleasure of mine. I pick up a couple whenever they're dirt cheap.

That said, I think you can judge them by their cover because you get pretty much what you expect in terms of quality, though the entertainment value is probably a lot higher than you'd expect. I do find quite a lot of comedic value in some of the cut scenes and voice acting and there's a lot of "drinking game material" (take drink each time you have to collect X amount of objects to open some convoluted lock or have to use smelling salts to wake someone up) but they're fun and you get your money's worth in play time.

There's really a whole cottage industry built around these games, with Artifex Mundi pumping out 4 or so per month through various obscure Polish game studios.

If I could ever be bothered or knew how, I'd livestream playing some of these games because they really deserve some sort of cult following. I already have my own fan theories that these games all take place in the same universe and the female protagonist is actually the same person, possibly a time traveler.

Some thoughts on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s Danger Zone, the new Battle Royale mode

Controversy = views, then everyone else jumps on the bandwagon as they don't want to miss out either. I wasn't even aware this was going on for this game, but I can already imagine it, it's always the same.

Sometimes I think it's a little more nuanced than that though, some of it might be a reaction to decades of media like Gamespot and IGN giving everything 9/10 to keep their press privileges and these independent channels finally provide a countervoice to that hegemony.

There never seems to be much of a meaningful middleground though, either reviewers shower praise on developers so they keep getting their pre-release keys or they just create controversy for the ad revenue. I think GOL is one of few voices out there that give criticism where it's due and call out dubious business practices, but also give neutral opinions irrespective of the background noise.

Editorial: An open letter to Valve on why they should keep on embracing Linux

Quoting: NeoTheFoxThis really is a charming love letter, I'll gladly co-sign it, all points raised are pretty smart.
I agree, great read! You should think about turning it into a petition. I'd add to that 1-2% cut that if all goes well with Linux, that they should really have a proper go at Steam Machines, but make their own hardware this time for the sake of standardisation and lower prices from economies of scale. If they made something decent, they'd really have a shot at taking on the next generation of consoles with a Linux-powered box.

There's really plenty of constructive criticism that can be aimed at Valve at the moment, and I think you covered the bases well. I really hope they make some quite drastic moves, not just for Linux bus in general.

Valve have adjusted their revenue share for bigger titles on Steam

Quoting: MayeulCWhat would be interesting for them is to take a (slightly) lesser cut if the game is cross-platform. Everyone would be happy about this, I think, especially bean counters :)
now that is one of the best ideas i've heard in a while to boost Linux-acceptance among the devs...too bad valve is not looking into this comments xD
Super good idea. It could also be platform-specific incentives as opposed to the whole cake, ie. they take their 25% cut for Windows sales but only 15% or less for Linux. Something like that might actually tip the balance and would cover the port costs presumably.

All in all though, I think this is a great move. I see a lot of developers like Bethesda with their much maligned Fallout 76 and CDProjekt with Gwent just releasing themselves since they make the money lost in sales back from not giving Valve anything. This is a good way of getting them back on Steam.

That said, they might need to think of a way to curb "review bombing" since that's another thing people fear on Steam. Though a lot of the time it's justified and calls certain companies out on anti-consumer bullshit, a lot of the time it could just be the result of some YouTuber anger bandwagon which sees a game panned on mass for being "too politically correct" or some other petty reason.

I think dividing the question with an extra parameter for Steamplay is a good option. The trend shows "wine" usage having increased by 10% over the past few months, when presumably that's almost entirely proton and traditional wine usage has probably dropped as a result.

I've been playing quite a few games through steamplay, but put "over 6 months ago" for wine.

It's a pretty big difference since those are counted as Linux sales in the eyes of the developer, just like any port done with a wine-wrapper.

The protagonist looks like Tommy Wisseau, I'm pretty sure he was hanging out in LA in 1996 too.
