Aspyr Media are reminding Linux gamers not to give up hope on Civilization VI

To be perfectly honest, I was a little shocked at the requirements for Civ5. As a turn based game I expected it to be usable on something with a less than stellar GPU (like those i915 Mac Minis).

Quoting: melkemindI dunno. It seems like the challenges of porting to Linux would be pretty identical to the challenges of porting to MacOS. I would expect all of the same kind of hardware support and driver quality snags. Except it's easier for them to raise the minimum spec on us.Quoting: BTREEdit: Just saw the reddit statement. I don't know what they could possibly be researching at this stage. The OSX port will be using OpenGL so it's not an additional API issue. Besides which, they've had (presumably) several months to look at the game and code. The lack of clarity and wording makes me suspect it's simply a investment/returns for man hours issue. However well rationalized by them, I still feel like I'm being treated like a second class citizen.Hold on a second now. The wording of their statement almost suggests they actually made a Linux port and it sucked, so 2K pulled the plug on it. Why else would they need to research and prove that their port can perform up to standards? Either that or the Mac port was not up to standards so 2K axed the Linux port.

Editorial: I ditched SteamOS in favour of a normal Linux distribution for my gaming

Quoting: dubigrasuWell, I think Valve is more interested in having SteamOS running on their sanctioned Steam Machines rather than the custom ones....which could be nearly anything. Unless Valve has some very Draconian system requirements, what's in random user systems and what's in "sanctioned" Steam Boxes probably overlaps a great deal.
The reset option (like for current consoles) does work if the default installation method is used.
No, Linux is not at 1900 games on Steam, we didn't get 100 games in nine days

Quoting: ThePierrasseSo what's the current amount then? Can't really blame those websites as the Steam games filters are really confusing (sometimes it says that we're at 1913 games and sometimes at 1825...)I don't like these numbers. That just reflects the number of purchasable items I think. I'm not sure it reflects the distinct number of games that are available. I don't like misleading numbers because they could lead to people getting p*ssed off when they realize the number is bogus. I would rather the number reflect something that a consumer would relate to. Expansion packs and whatnot should be labeled as such.
Ars slams SteamOS over issues with a single machine and a 4K monitor

OTOH, TVs are well known for not playing nice. SteamOS definitely needs to have a manual fallback setting for TVs that send bogus EDIDs. I've dealt with this myself with MythTV. Some older HDTVs generated all kinds of gibberish that would confuse a PC video card.
...and some of the MythTV crowd are also playing with 4K and h265. I've been contemplating the nv960 myself because of it's h265 decoder.

Quoting: calexilmy 4k monitor didnt play nice with a gpu that can barely handle 4k:Wasn't this some strange old monitor that had some funky dual cable method of dealing with the 4K signal?
SteamOS is POINTLESS!!!!!!!!
lolwut

...ordered one pretty much as soon as I saw the article on Ars. If nothing else, at $300 it should make an epic HTPC replacement for my aging ION1 machines.

Quoting: NyamiouSeriously WTF? Why do they benchmark with a GTX 660 and a dual core processor at a resolutions of 2560x1600 and 1792x1120? Doesn't that look like they tested all combinations and choose the one that was worst forHow do you even end up with a resolution like that anyways?

Just how many of us here are seriously dedicated to performance anyways? I still haven't gotten myself a "real gaming card". I still have what was at the time the bare minimum card supported for Oil Rush. I'm happy with my 15 pieces of flair.

Quoting: omer666I see two relevant points that are a bit overlooked. First, Brandon Adler is the lead producer, and as such his vision is that of the guy who decides what to invest on and how much. What he sees is "We spent money on Q&A because of Linux".Yes. That's the way it works with cross platform development. Adding another platform WILL expose more bugs. That is not a bad thing. It should improve the overall quality of the code base. It should even improve the code quality on the reference platform.

That's why this site is important. I have bought a number of games after reading about them here.

Quoting: Brian LinuxI remember going to this site in the old days, sad day indeed. Also the one with guy smoking the pipe? Does anyone remember what the name of that site was? IThat was the Linux Game Tome and it provided a very useful database of games. It's something that should be replicated by someone else. Linux Games can suffer from lack of visibility.

Opinion: Can Linux Be A Viable Gaming Platform? Thoughts From A Sympathetic Game Developer

Quoting: throghFrom my point of view a game developed only for "Ubuntu" or "SteamOS" is not the way to go. In fact it is no problem at all to release a working application for more than only one or two platforms. So the user should be capable of knowledge about the platform he / she is using. Only some basic knowledge and the motivation to ask questions at the right places, also having some basic interest about finding information on their own at a concrete point. There is no need for some kind of standardization or certification. What do you want to reach? Another Microsoft, this time only with the penguin on it? No thanks!I take the opposite view and find the notion that Linux represents "a collection of similar OSen" to be absurd. Any Linux is a collection of the same upstream projects as everyone else uses. Thus a binary for one distribution should not be that difficult to re-target for another. The community could even help with that effort. Unix is transparent and any user can see what a Linux binary is linked against. As far as individual APIs, there are obvious choices for some and a small set for others and those can almost always play nice with each other.
For me Linux and Open-Source is about the freedom to choose and not to be regulated by another ruleset and the dictate of some companies / groups which say this has to be the way of some kind of standard.
