Brushfire Games On Their Linux Sales For Shipwreck & Their Thoughts On Linux

Quoting: liamdaweAlso, just to point something out. This is why developers and gamers in general look down on us.

Quoting: aLI think this guy have more misconceptions than real issues..., for example, hes willing to buy an expensive machine just to program in... but not set up a linux environment that can just be installed in a windows fashion (next, next, next) in nearly any pc besides the one they are currently using?

And then they are a line away of having everything installed ( $ sudo whatever install A B C)
It's his platform of choice, as Linux is ours.

Quoting: BeamboomI do not mean this as an insult to anyone, but I seriously thought developers in general were a lot more geeky than this, and didn't really see it as much of a challenge to set up a system and do the required research while doing so.

I mean, I don't doubt this guy, he's very likely right in what he say (it's really well confirmed by other devs by the lack of basic QA testing) but seriously, he sound like your average, low competence consumer with this Mac ease of use attitude.

I just always thought they were more like us...
Again, calling a developer things like this is not helping, especially when they are doing nothing but supporting us. How would you like to be called things like this?

Think about your attitudes people, it's a little sour.

I may run this website, and speak to a lot of developers, but I know jack about things like the command line to the point of disliking it.
I find it a little shocking too. Admittedly I have been out of the industry for awhile but when I was still there everyone stuck me as very talented and highly motivated. Not only were the developers ready and able to deal with considerable intellectual challenges but the artists were pretty geeky too. In my current (non-gaming) shop, the Mac-head had no problem building himself a Linux build machine on his own with little help from IT. He's by no means an ubergeek either (but a competent programmer).

Also with Valve standardizing on Debian/Ubuntu, that's a logical starting point other developers.

Logitech F310 Gamepad Review On Linux
19 May 2015 at 8:03 pm UTC

Quoting: bisbyxI have 2 of these (you can get them dirt cheap!).

I was having kernel freezes playing Shadow Warrior. Someone pointed out that there was an xinput issue with an unofficial patch that fixed it (as the person was having the same issue in Borderlands the Pre-Sequel).

He pointed me to https://steamcommunity.com/app/233130/discussions/0/611702631210587760/ [External Link] which pointed me to http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg31446.html [External Link] "it's a kernel-patch for xpad that is supposed to fix crash that come from too much rumbling-requests." This is from may2014 and was still an issue as of last month, so I can only presume it hasnt been merged anywhere yet. My solution was to unplug my controllers anytime I play a game that doesnt explicitly require them (and as such, I've become less likely to play games that need a controller, because Im lazy).

Great controllers, but be aware that certain games in linux don't mix well with controllers.
Never mind game pads. I use a joystick. It's a cheap thing drop shipped from China with a gazillion buttons but it does the whole "casual" gaming thing very well.

President Of Blizzard Responds To The Linux Petition, Petition Owner Creates Childish Response
11 Mar 2015 at 8:10 pm UTC

I'm kind of indifferent to this little drama as well. Blizzard games are not something that I crave. I can see both sides of it. I can understand the frustration of the petitioner but the reaction from Blizzard was rather predictable.

On the other hand, my most wanted but not yet ported games are from a studio where I know the owner. So I will provide gentle nudges from time to time.

Might even remind him of when he was a mere team lead and was eager to GPL a game when it was only 1 year old. '-)

Tell Blizzard You Want Linux Support In Their Games

Quoting: throghWhy should I support a company to distribute their own proprietary DRM-platform with name "Battle.Net" on Linux?
Could you explain exactly why it is a problem? Because I really don't see the point of the DRM argument.
I'm a gamer, and the way I see it, if some dev makes a game and I like it, I will buy it and play it, like I have been doing with WoW for the past 9 or 10 years.
As long as I am happy with what I am paying for, why should it matter about the DRM?
DRM usually interferes with the gaming experience. In more extreme circumstances, DRM can disable a game once the publisher is no longer interested in selling it anymore. This can also happen due to simple technical glitches.

It serves no value to the user and tends to sabotage the system in some way.

C4 Engine Drops Linux Support, Developer Says Linux Is Inferior

One thing that struck me as interesting is how this thing seems to be targeted at academic sales and includes source code. It almost seems like the perfect situation for end user contributions in the usual manner of Linux and other Free Software.

I find his inability to install Ubuntu disturbing... quite disturbing.

Play Old DOS Games In Your Browser
7 Jan 2015 at 6:06 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestHmm, does not work in my browser. No clear advantage over installing DOSBox Game Launcher [External Link], is it?
OK, I don't have to locate/download the ZIPs - but DBGL runs offline :)
When I saw this I poked around it for a little bit and then went to GOG and snagged myself a copy of the Star Wars flight sims. They have windows installers but they seem to work fine in Linux once you transplant the files. It's all DOSBOX anyways.

As soon as my flight stick arrives from Amazon I will really give X-wing & Tie Fighter a workout...

Porting Civilization: Beyond Earth, Dev Update 6 From Aspyr Media (UPDATED)
5 Dec 2014 at 6:16 pm UTC

Quoting: reference2myselfThis is why I just got a new nvidia card, most games work like crap with ati and intel on linux.
I was a bit shocked when my old Intel Mini was not supported in Civ 5. It really didn't occur to me that a turn based game would require a decent GPU. So I am not really surprised that Linux support for ATI and Intel are lagging.

The state of these drivers is why I have been a long time nvidia user.

Borderlands2 and Borderlands TPS are excellent ports.
I can only speak for BL2 and I must say - from the perspective
of an AMD GPU user - it is NOT a good port.

Performance is abysmal compared to the same computer running BL2 on Win7.
Yes, they stated that at release time and even marked AMD "unsupported".
Still, *I* want an update on that matter. What's the reason for the bad performance?
Is it really just the well known "it's AMD drivers quality and we're waiting for a fix"?
When can we (AMD user) expect an update which *significantly* improves performance?
Go talk to AMD. They LAID off all of their Linux Driver Team in 2010 and expect the community to develop their driver for them. I have bought Nvidia ever since. Yes they are close source driver but guess what, every game I have tried works without issues. Nvidia close source drivers work with every distro so I dont know why people get so upset if its close source. As a gamer all I care is for my games to work on the OS I want to use.
Trolling post is obvious.
Is there are chance we can leave out the FUD from this and try some reasonable discussion?
The reports from actual AMD users seem to be at best "mixed". That's not "FUD". That's just the way it is. That's why I have avoided their kit for years.

I think he kind of misses the point of the whole "open source" thing. If Intel is dropping the ball with their driver with respect to games, then Valve can take care of business. In fact, this is THE classic use case that inspired the creation of the whole "Free Software" thing.

I don't feel "deprived" as a Linux user running Civ 5. I am not sure why I should feel bad about the current state of things.

If some marginal gaming benefit were enough to drive me to Windows, I wouldn't be a Linux user to begin with. I'm not sure how much such marginal advantages will matter once even current Windows users are able to leave that platform behind.

Quoting: GuestI have had these issues while porting a game to Linux and honestly it’s a pain. Now, if a game that needs porting has many wrongly-cased files, I’d probably write a code layer to remove the filesystem’s case-sensivity and be done with it.

I wonder if there is *any* point in having case-sensivity in a file system. I have never needed it and it has always been a nuisance.
Yes I did not see in case sensitive file system any point as only that programmers where lazy implementing it. Because it is much assayer to just compare byte by byte. The idea that you can have two files with same name but different case semis ridiculous to me. And it becomes such a bother when you are working in team and others are working in windows. I always tough that it is one of cons for Linux.
Teams should be a total non issue. As soon as you have Teams involved then there should be coding standards and none of this stuff should rear it's ugly head ever again. It's very much comparable to what is typically imposed on the source code (and someone already brought up that).
