XZ tools and libraries compromised with a critical issue

Quoting: BumadarAmazing how a thread about a backdoor in xz ended up posts about windows 95, the law and killing people.
This kind of underlines the point the limitations of Linear Conversation Threads like this one.

I think nested is better, but I find the whole upvote/downvote system a little nauseating and limited -- nested with reactionary emojis in place of voting like Misskey or something would be my dream go-to.

That way it would be possible to filter threads by light hearted "Funny Votes", "Technical Votes", etc... and have robust discussions while filtering out unwanted content.

It would be sick if private groups could have emojis exclusive to that group -- so Linuxers could have a penguin that we put on posts when we like that content, that would be sick.

Having read and reflected more, I feel like there are at least 2 points to drive home.

1. Why in the hell is anyone still using Github for FOSS? Projects should go independent or literally anywhere else.

2. This really drives home the point that __BINARY CANNOT BE TRUSTED__ -- we really should hammer this idea in HARD.

If you can't see the source, how are you going to verify (I) A Signature, and (II) What the software does and does not do.

I could see it being Legally Mandated that ALL SOFTWARE is required to publish their source code to ensure that malicious foreign actors haven't hidden things in the software.

__BINARY CANNOT BE TRUSTED__ -- of course most of you already know this -- Easy-Anti-Cheat? What does it really do? Denuvo? What does it really do? How do we know that it's safe? How can be verify that software is safe?

Binary Cannot Be Trusted. Fuck GitHub.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualGentoo has gone so far as to downgrade to 5.4.2, which is the last release signed by the previous maintainer.
Thanks for the analysis and scrutiny, I did a read the news announcement on their website, I don't have a developed informed opinion at this time, but it's good to know that using the Arch Linux Archive you can go back to that version like this

pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/x/xz/xz-5.4.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Maybe it's time to get into Gentoo and cut the middle man out.

Edit: There is discussion about whether 5.4.x is old enough and some people suggest going back to 5.3.1 in the thread linked in the comment above.

GitLab takes down Nintendo Switch emulator suyu due to the DMCA

Dear Nintendo:

SELL YOUR GAMES ON STEAM. PIRACY IS A SERVICE PROBLEM. STOP CUTTING OFF YOUR NOSE TO SPITE YOUR FACE FANS.

PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO BUY YOUR STUPID WALLED GARDEN HARDWARE.

That is all.

GOG team up with Amazon Luna for cloud gaming
19 Mar 2024 at 9:15 pm UTC

if you're using a Chrome based browser
Aww, yeaa, nahhh.

But I can see their strategy and wish them well assuming they don't compromise on their integrity to selling DRM-free downloads.

Considering Amazon is planning on building a Nuclear Powered DataCenter, I suppose they will have the niagra-falls of cheap energy to power even the beefiest overclocked GPUs and Cooling Solutions to make this a thing.

And Amazon doesn't have the same track record as killing off things as Google, so I imagine they really mean to carve a niche.

Still, it's not for me. Best of luck, I hope they make a billion dollars and remember their roots and stick to their core values.

CoreCtrl adds AMD RX 7000 series fan curve controls, Intel CPU temperature sensors

I use this on at least 4 computers, my biggest complaints would be that fan speed doesn't adjust unless the app is open all the time, so one of the SFF computers gets really hot, then I notice it or reboot and the fan goes wild.

Another complaint would be that it doesn't always start, AFAIK I symlink the desktop launcher to `~/.config/autostart/` and most of the time it works but some of the time it doesn't.

I'm not sure the status of the program, but it would be really great if the App did all the actions through a Systemd service or Daemon or however that could run all the time in the background and auto-start.

They've done a great job though, and I appreciate their work, and also recently I heard of LACT -- a AMD voltage and sensor control panel -- I could almost see several projects like these combining someday into a more robust solution.

Steam Families announced with parental controls, no more library locking

Quoting: Mountain Manbut I can't imagine developers and publishers are going to be too thrilled about the possibility of this feature cutting into their sales.
The primal human -- using the lower brain functions is definately going to be afraid of "loosing sales".

But kick in higher brain functions & logic and get the opposite result. The more people that play your game the more The Network Effect [External Link] happens and the more sales.

What's worse than people playing your game and talking about it among family? Nobody playing your game and nobody talking about it.

Lower & Higher brain functions can be a funny thing.

Quoting: seamoose"Family Sharing is a feature that developers may opt their games out of for technical or other reasons at any time. Visit the Steam Store to see a list of games that currently support Family Sharing."
The words "at any time" do invoke concern.

Not a fan of that -- if when I purchase a product that feature is included and declared, I think they should only be able to turn it off for new purchases.

A handshake is a handshake.

Currently, with Steam Family Sharing, if one person is playing a game your whole library is locked. You can either boot them off, or wait. Now, that's changed. As long as you're playing different games - it's all good. [...] if other members in your Family Group have a copy, multiple people can play the same game at the same time.
Like it should have been, and I don't even have to come to the comments to ask.

I've purchased 500+ games and the whole -- I can't play a free to play game while a family member is playing some other game I bought is not sensible at all.

Hail Gaben & VOVO -- one of the last companies who truly care about their customers.

This is how Capitalism was supposed to be.

I really don't like companies behelden to Wallstreet Stock Investors. The companies have 2 masters and they always pick their stock holders over their customers -- infact it's legally codified that they are required to otherwise they could be sued for not squeezing every dollar and cent.

That's what the symbolism of the Harkonnen lore in Dune is all about.

Remember when corporations weren't legally considered people?

Quoting: PenglingThis particular one's just an emulated PlayStation title.
That explains so much, thank you :)

Quoting: PenglingAs far as I know, this collection never had it [Denuvo].
I combed the Steam Forums a little couldn't get a "yes" there -- maybe people have been speculating based on the trend to shoe-horn launchers and DRM into games post-launch -- like what happened with the Bioshock series IIUC.

--

Of course, MGS1 can still be bought for PS1 and simply emulated, and I think there may be a team working on a decompiled version of it too -- which honestly would seem to be the real definitive edition.

It's been a long time since I've beat MGS1, but man did I enjoy the story. It's definitely worthy of preservation and upgrades.
