ARK: Survival Evolved updated with the latest 'Unreal Rendering code', still terrible on Linux

Quoting: TheRiddickDid the latest UE4 engine update have Vulkan API option?
Yes, latest UE4 has Vulkan.

This is just a situation of hard-love. If we allow our standards to be so low that we accept being treated as sub-equal to Windows, Mac and Consoles -- developers will be conditioned to treat us as so.

There's a time to call a developer out for product defects and a time to say please and thank you, -- they're all part of the same balance -- everything in its right proportion -- I'm glad to see this article in my feed today.

ARK: Survival Evolved updated with the latest 'Unreal Rendering code', still terrible on Linux

I play this with my girl on Linux sometimes.

On a i7-6700k GTX 970 with SSD it takes probably 30 seconds to get to the loading screen which lags to all hell.

Then launching the server takes about 4-6 minuets while locking up the computer (No alt tabbing or you'll be sorry)

Then you better pray there wasn't a patch and it doesn't have to update your data files or you're out a few more minuets.

Then connecting the second Linux Gaming PC #2 has to be done within the first 60 seconds or else the server on Linux Gaming PC #1 has to be restarted to fix some rediculous broadcast issue.

Oh and did I mention when loading the server list you have to ninja type in your friends server name or the client will explode will downloading the data.

I seriously xkill Ark so many times.

All in all: It takes a good 20 minuets just to login to start to play. I don't know who programmed their menu or thought it would be a good idea to have a lag-fest when loading a server list instead of seperating client and server model and using a fucking asynchronous data call to get data and having a seperate Draw() or fucking UpdateTheFuckingList() function -- but nope -- I guess going with the whole freeze your client to shit method was the way to go.

The water has been broken for about 2 - 4 months, it's a joke.

Maybe it's called "Survival Evolved" because the user needs to survive the evolving shitfest that is the client.

AMD RX Vega GPUs released along with a new AMDGPU-PRO Driver

If I didn't have other expenditures I would gladly make the jump from RX 480 to VEGA, AMD has been a great ride this last year.

I think these cards could get good juice and at the right price I'd be down.

Then the other direction pulls me to look for the smallest, coolest card available for Mini ITX builds like the RX 470 Mini.

Pretty hard pick IMO. Nvidia is out of the question with their closed drivers.

I solved the camping issue in my game by calculating if enemies were within X range of the randomized spawn point in the spawn point array.

5 lines of code outta do it.

Looks like the RPG 'GOKEN' really will be coming to Linux, after user requests

A lot of my Linux crew hace commented on the art being really well done in tha trailer.

I hope the story, mechanics and level design are equally amazing.

Stardew Valley to get multiplayer beta by the end of the year

Quoting: Sir_DiealotThis year is the year of the Linux Desktop, next year is the year of Stardew Valley multiplayer.
Pretty sure the `Year of the Linux Desktop` has already come. For most of us it was the Year in which we switched to Linux full-time.

Quoting: WorMzyI am still not convinced that this game needs MP... still, it should appease the people who have demanded it since day one.

I'll give it a go with my girlfriend when it drops, and maybe I'll have a change of heart.
"Need?" Not really.

But for some demographics like couples it'll be a home run. I know so many couples who are excited to play SDV.

Hollow Knight adds free content alongside update

If only they would fix the saves being spaced out wrong around 20 hours in.

I cant believe the map was designed on paper and never reworked. Running back and forth is such a waste of time never part of Super Metroid series due to tge elevators and proper map spacing of saves. Buying maps is lame too.

Linux game sales statistics from multiple developers, part 5

Another metric I would be interested in is calculating sales numbers vs total linux steam gamers, to know what percent of the market bought.

Quoting: scaineYou only have to look at the Leaving Lindow developer to realise that we're lucky to have games like Ark and Rust at all!

This situation boils down to the harsh reality of trying to make money - their priority will always be their largest customer base. But yeah, I'd like a bit of consideration as a paying customer. Right now, it can feel pretty unfair at times.
I disagree with that first statement. Grossly oversimplifying the past 6 years of hundreds of thousands of people's efforts to make linux emerge as a gaming platform was not luck.

If you recall, Microsoft made poor decisions with Windows 8 which caused Gabe Newell to become distressed and invest in Linux to secure Valve's future. Also people like Liam Dawe have spent thousands of hours writing articles and spearheading the news efforts of gaming on Linux. And finally others have spent countless hours improving MESA, convincing game developers we're worth it, and buying and playing, and creating Linux Steam Groups, etc...

I'm sorry I just really resent calling all of our collective efforts "Luck", It wasn't easy for me to convince Black Mesa devs and other game devs that Linux is worth the time. It took a lot of calculated and reasonable conversations which lasted for days and days each.

I'm not mad I just hope that that sediment that "we're lucky" dies. Cold hard investment of money, time, resources, etc... has made gaming on Linux what it is today.

Additionally, Ark is on Linux because Unreal Engine is on Linux because Unreal devs were also concerned about Windows 8 invasion of privacy and locking down apps to Windows Store & Microsoft Signature Required to distribute and install. Again - not luck at all.

( I used to spend hours a day for probably 4+ years on the linux & gaming community, I fundamentally believe that open source is required for the prosperity of the future and a world without it would be a very sad and terrible place. )
