GOG now ask for donations when you buy games

@rustynail

Did a little bit of digging this morning because I had the time. Based off the most recent active feature list, I have to assume that GOG Achievements are still in the experimental phase. Heroic is using Comet to interface with the GOG Galaxy Communication Service.

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/08/heroic-games-launcher-v215-has-expanded-gog-support-ea-games-from-epic-store-support/

At this point, Heroic Games Launcher appears to be the closest to the goal. Comet has listed Heroic as "experimental", Lutris as "planned", and MiniGalaxy as "unknown".

https://github.com/imLinguin/comet

Personally, I think this is a good idea. Rather than duplicate the effort, GOG could team up with the community to deliver an open-source solution for their Linux client. Heroic is the current front-liner, but there is no reason they could not work with multiple options and include Lutris, MiniGalaxy and others in delivering a Linux client solution as well.

I have to admit, it would be a bold move on GOG's part if they chose to do this.

@kaiman
I first read the article headline "GOG now ask for donations when you buy games" and I am like "Hell no! Raise your prices if you don't make enough money!". But then the article states that it is for the game preservation program, and I think that's a legitimate cause.
I agree. The headline is misleading. I have no problem with GOG fundraising to support their Game Preservation project. These things cost money. If it is okay for game developers to fundraise through crowdfunding, why shouldn't it also be okay for game maintainers to do the same? It is a worthy project!

I wonder if it is possible to donate to the project without purchasing something?

@Eike
It is wrong to say "Steam is DRM".
I don't want to start into this argument again... Technically, you are right in saying the Steam client is not DRM. I think @Lib-Inst was simply referring to the fact that the Steam client is initially required to install the game whereas the offline installers are self-contained. So, more of a "you cannot install a game bought on Steam without the Steam client" or "installation requires the Steam client" kind of complaint.

Steam gets a new Steam Deck-like Performance Monitor now in Beta replacing the FPS counter

Umm ... MSI Afterburner?

After all, this is the Windows-based tool that MangoHUD is reportedly based on.

Personally, though, I found that MangoHUD is more intuitive and easier to configure. I was also a little startled when Mod Organizer 2 popped complaining of incompatibilities with Afterburner and recommended disabling it.

I like the idea of Valve adding more MangoHUD-like features to the Steam overlay.

Or have I missed that time when he offered the modding community the opportunity to take over the site and have it managed by a non-profit?
Why didn't Robin do this?

I mentioned this article to my wife this morning. Her response startled me but I should have thought of it myself. To her, it sounded like, after 24 years, Robin decided he wanted to retire, found someone that willing to pay the amount he wanted for that retirement, and sold it to obtain those retirement funds.

We have been seeing that happen a lot around here, with businesses that were often a mainstay of the community collapsing and disappearing after the original owner removed themselves from the picture.

Sometimes the new owner just seems to see the purchase as an investment that is supposed to generate returns without hands-on involvement. The business inevitably fails and a great community asset is lost.

A game engine built in another game engine. Kinda bizarre ... Well, at least they're using Godot.

FPS: Can't do 'em, so nope.

Multiple DRM: Even if FPS games didn't give me severe vertigo, this would become the other reason to give this one a pass.

- Survival cooking gameplay with a pressure-based stress system.
- Unpredictable customers with weird requests and weirder appearances.
I did this for real. Can't imagine why I would want to simulate it virtually ...

Still, for those that have never experienced professional cooking or who might thrive under that kind of pressure, it sounds like it might be fun ...

Demo doesn't launch in Proton on my system. Some sort of Unity engine error. Can't be bothered to troubleshoot the problem. Uninstalled.

Is the picture a screenshot from a game? If so, does anyone know which game?
