The Steam Hardware Survey had some flaw causing cyber cafes to be over-counting users

Quoting: g000hI've suspected inaccuracies in the Steam counts, for a long time. One other Windows versus other OS thing that I've noticed is the fact that Steam auto-starts on Windows when you log on to Windows. With my Linux desktops, Steam only logs on, when I launch the client myself.
Steam works the exact same way in Windows as Linux, you decide whether you want it to start with the OS or not, mine starts when I say it starts not when Windows starts, never let anything auto-start with the OS, especially Windows as that's a surefire way to get your system infected.

ps. we've been telling Valve for years their survey was screwed, it's not tinfoil hats cutting off oxygen to our brains.

Feral Interactive have released an open source tool that’ll help get the most performance out of Linux games

Quoting: mt7479Didn't have much luck with 16.04 but on 18.04 it seems to do what it is supposed to:
I couldn't even get it to install on 16.04, it works perfectly on 17.10 & 18.04, it just means I can be lazy & not bother to switch the governor myself, which is a task of seconds. :D

Quoting: m2mg2Game locks up with black screen. Tried with 390.48 and 396 Beta drivers. Tried with gamemode enabled and disabled. Started on Fedora 26 and upgraded to 27. Tried with SELINUX in permissive mode. No real useful crash info, just segmentation fault 11.
It seems that the game was developed for Ubuntu 17.10 in mind... I have 14.04.5 LTS and I have the same segmentation fault 11.
I'm gonna experiment with Xubuntu 18.04 and see what happen-
I had the same segmentation fault crash on Ubuntu 16.04 with the 396 beta drivers, I'm now using Ubuntu 18.04 with the 390.48 drivers, Rise is rock solid & I've managed to get 70% of the way through the main storyline with no crashes, the 396 Beta drivers give me the segmentation fault crash even with 18.04.

Even Ubuntu 17.10 with the 396 drivers was a crash fest for Rise, avoid those drivers for the moment, they're obviously broken.

Since switching to Ubuntu 17.10 with the 390.48 drivers I've only had a single segfault crash, before that with 16.04.4 & 396.18 it was crashing every 5 minutes.

Quoting: jensDid you noticed any difference except stability between both driver versions, like something visual or performance? I'm using 390.48 without any apparent issue too. I'm wondering why Feral states the beta drivers is the minimum requirement.
I'm not too sure, the beta drivers don't give me enough time to stop & look around before crashing to desktop, I did notice a random momentary freeze on the menu every time there's lightning with the beta drivers that's not happening on the earlier drivers.

Quoting: lucifertdarkI went from unsupported distro & supported drivers to supported on both & the crashing problem has increased in speed, going from every 5 minutes to every 2 minutes. While it works it looks amazing though.
Their support is usually excellent, especially once you are using their supported distributions and drivers. Please raise a support ticket.
I think I'm going to hold off pestering their support for the moment, after downgrading to the 390 drivers the crash has gone & I've just spent over an hour running round the Croft Manor without a single crash or hiccup with the graphics set to Medium.

Quoting: iplaygameswearingatuxAnyone else getting segfaults every 5 minutes?
Yes, I'm so glad it's not just me, every 5 minutes on the dot, apart from the OS I'm using (Ubuntu 16.04) my machine easily meets the minimum to run the game, I'm hoping they have a fix soon as I REALLY want to play it.
