Nvidia release Linux beta driver with Vulkan
16 Feb 2016 at 11:31 pm UTC

Quoting: TealIt's very simple. They forked the driver at 355 and implemented Vulkan in the splintered fork, probably beginning with that months ago. Then, 358 and 361 happened independently on that, but they haven't yet bothered with porting the changes over to the new versions of the driver.

Long story short, yes, you have to downgrade your driver to get Vulkan support right now, and considering there's only one single application on Linux capable of utilizing it outside of the SDK, unless you really feel the need to be among the first to test Talos principle, or (actually nevermind, Talos principle beta only runs on Windows for now. There's currently ZERO Vulkan capable Linux apps outside of the samples and the SDK) unless you are a developer who's about to leap into Vulkan development themselves, just wait till Vulkan makes it up into the main branch, you aren't missing out for now.
yeah i understand what's going on but it would seemingly make more sense with the 361 series to beta test since it's already a "beta" driver anyway. but whichever... nvidia has their reasons I'm sure. i don't mind having to downgrade though to test things out when the games start to show support.

Quoting: leillo1975I ser that the Vulkan beta driver is 355.00. I have installed in my system 361.28. Are my driver Vulkan ready or only the driver 355 are capable?
You have to install Vulkan beta driver 355.00. It seems Vulkan API Is just added to older version of driver as it is for testing. When it will be OKed by QA, they will add it to latest driver release.
the thing is we have versions 355, 358 and 361 available in beta forms as well. so the questions still remains is it just the 355 or will the other newer versions receive the update? I'd assume yes... but I've learned to never assume anything because it's not always the case.

my thoughts exactly, i was kind of confused on the version number myself.

Nvidia releases an open-source Vulkan C++ API, it's now on github

oh my :),this should help with Mir and Wayland when it comes to Nvidia support. it is a basic low level API. but can be expanded on. at least it's on github so more can contribute to it's code.

Street Fighter V will release on Linux & SteamOS this Spring time

looks like the reviews so far indicate SF5 being a real flop. seems like nothing works even on windows... kind of reminds me of the latest Batman game. Game companies releasing way to early and then on top of that charge full MSRP for subpar quality plus release DLCs for the full game. the state of gaming in the AAA market is nutts to put it lightly.
I'll just have to wait for the super mega - all included deal for $30 after everything is fixed :P
Seriously though, no arcade mode? no trial mode... then the online multiplayer network is having lots of issues. ( that is absolutely no way to release a game) Capcom is about as bad as EA at this point.

Tomb Raider really does look like it's coming to Linux & SteamOS

The talk about Vulkan at FOSDEM by Jason Ekstrand from Intel now has a video up

that makes a lot more sense now, so Vulkan can use multiple different types of drivers at the same time without any extra overhead like it is for bumblebee. that's going to be a big deal with laptops and could be a big benefit to desktops as well, because in fact we will be able to use multiple GPUs from different manufacturers at the same time.

Quoting: SabunMaybe it's just me, but you'd think they'd have this working before SteamOS's debut. I'd figure it would have been a boon to say "Hey, look! We've made the Linux numbers go up!" on media sites.

It worries me a little, maybe their anticipation was that it wasn't going to improve the Linux adoption rate or that the numbers wouldn't look as good as hoped.
There's so many things Valve could do/should do, but it takes them a long time. Look at how long it took them to fix the upcoming filter for SteamOS/Linux...
Valve seems to understand that there's not going to be a major shift overnight. it's going to take them time to work out the kinks because this is probably fairly new territory for them. as far as the whole idea of a gaming OS tailored by them. And i'm pretty sure a lot of their marketing plan has to do with Vulkan and it's overall development. because it's going to take a bit of time before more companies are using it as the "new standard". once that is all in place then they can go full steam... ahead. (pun intended) :P

The final results of the Linux GRID Autosport tournament
6 Feb 2016 at 5:12 pm UTC

that looked like a lot of fun :) i haven't been playing Grid that much lately, seems to much like a racing sim, although I was getting a bit better the last time i played. would be nice to catch up to you guys and give it a go sometime. I'm surprised you guys just don't play Dirt Showdown :P I'm actually pretty decent at that.

Batman: Arkham Knight for Linux & SteamOS cancelled

If Feral gave up on it then it just goes to show how crappy of a game it really is. So no real loss honestly. I had my doubts about this port. but I was also curious to see what Feral could do with a already bad windows title.
