Valve Are Tracking SteamOS Issues With AMD Graphics

Quoting: dubigrasuI see.
No, I wouldn't recommend SteamOS as a distro for beginners.
Having said that, after setting up the repositories is not much different than a minimal Debian with the SteamOS session on top.
You can treat it like any other Linux.
Yeah, I know that and you know that :)

My point is that if you are able to run it as your main os, you already know you can treat it like any other linux, but you might mislead some rookie steam fan to try it as their main OS and as a first linux contact it might be disapointing :S

Steamos is only optimized to act as a launcher for steam and steam games. Other stuff might or might not work. And is not like my opinion, valve has stated so several times...

Its just debian with some patches here and there. I only use debian as my desktop and at my servers... but I dont recommend it newcomers. Its better to get their feet wet with ubuntu for instance

Quoting: dubigrasuNot sure what you mean by that.
People might think is a normal linux and give their first linux try with steamos. Valve has said is not. Its only optimized for running the games and run steam client...

If somebody want to try linux as a main desktop, they should try ubuntu, or debian and steam will run as smooth

Even if some ppl is able to run it as main OS like you

Quoting: dubigrasuI do have a SteamOS running and in fact is my main distro since it was release.
Please, dont say that kind of things even if is true that you run it as your main distro. I do run debian... Not sure how different from steamos it is... but valve has stated several times is supposed to do good running games. Optimized kernel and such... but no as a main desktop... yet or even at some point...

Yes, it is mainly debian... but in that case I would suggest to people to install debian or even ubuntu as a main desktop... and steamos only if they only intend to play

Quoting: GuestI suspect however that they will either separately or together craft a triple A video game company, and enjoy only needing to do the part of game development they enjoy the most while leaving the rest of the work up to others, be that design, programming or storywriting. That's probably what I'd do if I were a normal person.
If you read the notch post about this, he says he doesnt want to be on the spotlight. He intends to do with the money whatever cool project cross his mind... and that he will stop on sight any project that brings him to the spotlight again.

Garry's Mod Hits the 6 Million Mark!
11 Sep 2014 at 3:29 pm UTC

again with all the hate and profitability... how about a little support and gratitude for a platform, aka linux, that even without huge sales has prevented their own platforms from being locked away and to be decided what enters and what not in their market

Valve was able to see it and only (one big reason) it supports linux is to avoid being locked in... why dont you all developers do the same, even if you dont use it yourself (you dont use it probably coz your dont know better anyway)...

Its a little cost, that prevents apocalipse over your heads... apple (and microsoft now) want to tell you what you can and what cannt sell... support that little guy that by his mere presence prevents it from happening.

dont fool yourself... if ms had no linux alternative, it would had happen long ago...

This should be on the heads of every windows developer out there... even If they are on a thigh budget

Puppy Games Aren't Impressed With Linux Sales (UPDATED)
9 Sep 2014 at 1:09 pm UTC

Its understandable if they dont want to take one for the team

Maybe if mac declined their game on the mac store just because and ms would do something similar, they would start looking into the whole thing of growing the linux market share from a different perspective... But before that happens, their lack of perspective is understandable

Quoting: dimkothe questionnaire is somewhat questionable.
i buy games when I believe they are good. In one month i can buy 5 on another nothing. I don't just buy every crap out there.

Also, about compiling steam machine...
It's sorta weird question. I compile my own PC's, if its better than steam os PC, does it qualify?
Yeah, that question is weird... maybe some I bought 2 humble bundles with 10 games each, 5 in total in linux. How many games did i buy?

About the steam machine I think the question is, do you plan to buy a machine announced as such?

I assemble my own machines as well, but I could upgrade the rig on my tv if the price and specs are good.

Its not usual that you can put money into something marketing linux

Quoting: edgleyDone.

Quoting: Segata SanshiroIt is! It's Debian based. I just listed the main distro families to avoid having to do a massive list. I'll make that clearer in the next one :)
I'd say it was far enough separated from Debian these days to include it as an "Ubuntu-based" option instead.
well, 97% of ubuntu is just debian. That said, looking at both popcons, it has one order of magnitude more users than debian. What of those 2 things grant a separate option is a can of worms i wont bother to open :)
