Apogee Entertainment surprise releases Secret Agent HD, a remaster of the 90s classic
28 Aug 2021 at 8:14 pm UTC
"Works on: Windows (7, 8, 10), Linux (Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04)"
They used to be on GOG.com, but they were removed ages ago... If you had already purchased them (as I did), they're still in your library; if not, you miss out. Apparently they're not on Steam anymore, either.
F#%k Gearbox, they're like a slightly less-evil version of EA.

My experiences of Valve's VR on Linux
28 Jul 2021 at 10:00 am UTC Likes: 3
Until a little over a year ago, I worked in the largest family entertainment center ("arcade") in the Southern Hemisphere and approximately 80% of their machines - including their ~AU$150,000 VR systems (they had two different systems, from two unrelated companies, during my tenure) - ran a Linux-based operating system... It was almost always Ubuntu, though occasionally you'd see Red Hat, Linux Mint or Debian.
On a side note, even Microsoft's "Halo" arcade machine ran a Linux-based operating system... It runs Ubuntu, I'm not even kidding! Looking back, I wish to god I had recorded footage of the boot-up proving this on my iPhone, because this is one of those facts that people would hear and be like "There's no way that's true!"

Quoting: bekoAnd VR on Linux is a niche in a niche. Not really. At least in the commercial space.

Seems like game store GOG is doing well overall in their new figures with revenue up 114%

Since that time, 90% of the "new" Linux titles are "shovelware" and probably one out of every ten "new" Linux games is actually worth buying... If that were not enough, they refuse to make even most of their own titles available to Linux users (such as Cyberpunk 2077).
As they say, "No Tux, no bucks".
If The people want a "Galaxy" client, give it to them (especially since GOG have repeatedly promised that it's coming) - but I absolutely don't want it if it's going to become mandatory at some point, which is what I suspect will happen... I prefer to install my games manually, not with a custom front-end.
You get people comfortable with something like that, and it'll be much easier to completely "lock" people to a platform like they do with Google's Android and Apple's iOS / iPadOS / macOS / tvOS / watchOS (and Microsoft I suppose - they have an app store in Windows, don't they?)...

Quoting: kon14Couldn't care less. I lost all interest in CDPR and GOG after the TW3 and Galaxy linux releases were both silently dropped. My gripe with them is that a couple of years back, they made this big song-and-dance about how they were going to have this big push into the Linux Community... And for a brief period of time, that was true - we ended up with quite a few high-quality Linux titles almost overnight.
I'd rather buy (possibly) drm'd games from Steam and support Valve's efforts in revolutionizing the platform rather than pay a single cent to a company that treats me like a second class citizen even though I'm paying just as much as everyone else.
They literally redesigned Galaxy and still ignored Linux, thus I'll ignore them, at least until they fix their mess and start supporting us properly.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceTo all those who refuse to buy Linux games from GOG due to them not releasing Linux versions of their client or newer games: do you buy Windows games on Steam ? Just a curiousity........Nope.
As they say, "No Tux, no bucks".
Quoting: GuestFor myself, the convenience of GOG is that it doesn't require some extra client to download the games - I can grab them directly from the website and use stand-alone installers. I prefer this personally, where available.This.
Actually I would really rather there not be a GOG Galaxy client if it meant that games started to require it. I would also much rather an open source client as well.

Quoting: GuestThe only upside of GOG.com is the DRM-free installers, and they already started to hide these in favour of their Galaxy malware. And this is quite literally the only reason I shop at GOG over other stores, where ever possible...
Quoting: GuestThe lack of a Linux build of Galaxy is the only thing preventing them to add DRM-gated features to the Linux games they sell. This is what I fear - that "Galaxy" is a discreet way to move people towards a "controlled" installation... Granted "Galaxy" is not DRM in the traditional sense, but like with Steam, it gives GOG a way to "control" installations and indirectly "secure" games (to a point).
You get people comfortable with something like that, and it'll be much easier to completely "lock" people to a platform like they do with Google's Android and Apple's iOS / iPadOS / macOS / tvOS / watchOS (and Microsoft I suppose - they have an app store in Windows, don't they?)...
Humble Bundle replacing purchase sliders with less generous options

Just strip the DRM from your "Kindle" eBooks or ComiXology comics... It's easy enough to do, and takes just seconds.
*Cough cough*

Quoting: ProtektorI don't even buy ebooks from Humble because there are so many places these days to get DRM free books. DriveThru RPG has tons of DRM free gaming books and even some free books. Kobo and Baen Books have tons of DRM free ebooks and even free books with no DRM. There is Comixology has free comics and DRM free comics and there is also DriveThru Comics as well with DRM free comics.*Cough cough*

Admittedly, I still buy most of my games from GOG.com, but occasionally I will make the purchase via Patreon... Haven't really looked into itch.io, but I probably should, because people are always going on about it.

Quoting: GuestHumble used to be something quite different, and I stopped being terribly interested in it quite a while ago. Sure I've made the odd purchase, but rarely for games and instead ebooks.This.
Equally I'm not jumping up & down about it. It once was something I liked, now it's not, and that's really about it. Meh.
I much prefer to use patreon, itch.io, and purchases directly from developers these days.

Discord has reportedly ended talks with Microsoft to remain independent

Also, I was not of the impression that Discord track all that much, which is the exact opposite of Microsoft, who infamously track virtually everything you do on "your" computer... Am I wrong?
You do realize that Google infamously harvests waaaaaaaaay more data than what Apple has ever harvested, right? And pretty much all of their (Google's) stuff can be replaced with privacy-friendly alternatives that are just as good - if not better - than what Google currently offer...
Like you though, I have taken steps to gain more control over my stuff... Most of my online stuff is run via my own domains on shared hosting, I don't have social media accounts (I have a Discord account, but don't really use it) and there's not a whole lot of forums I use.
Someday, I'd like to move to fully self-hosting everything, though I probably wouldn't have said server located in Australia, because we're basically China of the Western World (i.e. a "surveillance state").
There's a whole lotta people making the jump to Odysee these days, too... Mostly people that cross-post (i.e. post their content to both Odysee and YouTube), but still, it's a step in the right direction.

Quoting: scaineFor me, MS and Apple are a hard no. Amazon is an avoid if possible (which is hard) and Google is an air of resignation - I'm too invested in their infrastructure now, so I accept it for convenience sake. If they ever cross a line, I'll reconsider, but it would difficult to give up... well, nearly everything - Gmail, Calendar, Android, Youtube mainly, but a host of other services too, like Calendar, some light Drive use, even DNS on my router. Google are everywhere.Apple is a hard "no", but Google is okay?

Quoting: GuestYes, that’s meI'd do this if I had the money and infrastructure to do so... But I'm in Australia and we use the NBN, which is slow and unreliable at the best of times, not to mention the cost involved in such a goal.
Outside of a couple small scale forums and IRC channels, most of my communication means are self-hosted. On a server that is physically under my full control.

Quoting: GuestI think YouTube is the only Google service I use. And since it is only to follow a couple low-activity channels, I do not go there every day.But you don't even need an account for this... I mostly use Odysee - which is fantastic, by the way - but I do use YouTube for a few channels (mostly when watching something on GamingonLinux or on the TV whilst eating dinner), without a Google account.

Radeon Software for Linux 21.10 brings Vulkan Ray Tracing in preview

Do the NVIDIA drivers support ray-tracing yet?
I nearly bought a version of my existing laptop with a ray-tracing graphics card, but the price-jump was pretty big over what I have now, so I put it off until I upgrade next... I haven't looked into ray-tracing too much, in part because I'm lazy and do most of my gaming on my Sony PlayStation 4 Pro / Nintendo Switch, but from what I understand, it makes quite a big difference.

System76 announce COSMIC, their own GNOME-based desktop environment for Pop!_OS
15 Apr 2021 at 5:49 am UTC
I probably wouldn't make the jump on my "daily driver" until the next LTS release if I was impressed by it, but I'll definitely consider putting it on my Surface GO, because the video I watched reckons KDE is pretty customizable and despite what most people seem to think, GNOME is garbage on a touchscreen (at least in my opinion).
15 Apr 2021 at 5:49 am UTC
Quoting: CatKillerI'm not sure what you mean by this. Kubuntu [External Link] and KDE Neon [External Link] are both prominent Ubuntu-based distros that use KDE. Kubuntu is one of the Ubuntu flavours, so it follows Ubuntu's release model, and KDE Neon is from the KDE project, putting the latest KDE release on an LTS Ubuntu base. It's easy enough to fire up a live USB of either to see if it's the kind of thing you might be interested in.I forgot about Kubuntu and with regards to the latter, I was confusing it with Plasma... #ThatGuy

System76 announce COSMIC, their own GNOME-based desktop environment for Pop!_OS

And have you used Pop!_OS?
I haven't used it since the very first (stable) version and having just installed it on my Microsoft Surface GO the other day, I was pleasantly surprised... Next to "vanilla" Ubuntu (which I use on my "daily driver"), Pop!_OS is prettier, it seems to have slightly better performance and just seems to be a more "refined" Ubuntu in all the right ways.
The only reason I gave away Pop!_OS before was because it was basically just a "reskinned" Ubuntu - that doesn't seem to be the case anymore, and there's a good chance I'll make the change on my "daily driver" with the next LTS release... I plan to take it for a "proper" spin on a "spare computer tomorrow (my Surface GO is mostly for reading eBooks, eComics and eMagazines).
I hate GNOME, but it "just works"... So I'll stick with it, for now. lol

Quoting: KohlyKohlThey should just switch to KDE and provide their own theme...It's funny you say this, because I just watched a video on LBRY / Odysee about KDE, and the content producer spoke pretty highly of KDE... I haven't used KDE since back when Red Hat Linux was still a thing (outside of the corporate world) and I'd be willing to give it a whirl - but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of "mainstream" distros using it (particularly in the Debian / Ubuntu-based world), and I'm too lazy to muck around with it too much.
