I used to loath unity, and always use MATE or LXDE, however my gaming rig is on my HDTV in my living room and I think the look of unity suits that more.
Also unity is far better than it used to be.
On laptops I use MATE.

Yeah I gave up on this due to crashes, but it is a really good game.

I only play one windows game: elite dangerous.
As soon as (if) the linux version comes out then I will wipe windows.

I disagree, this was the first AAA title I'd ever played on linux, and that for me was a big thing.
Tweaking the settings and have a powerful Gfx card and machine gave me flawless gameplay.
Yes it would have been nice to be in native OpenGL but it wasn't.
Maybe you need a better graphics card?

I have a GTX 770 and I found witcher 2 performed far better when I turned off the ubersampling option.
I also probably bought at the wrong time, those 9xx cards look great.

I played FF 7 to 13 and they got progressively worse. they peaked around 10, 12 was good but 13 was too dumbed down. FF is over as far as I'm concerned, although square enix have redeemed themselves slightly with the amazing tomb raider reboot.
