Valve announce SteamOS Compatibility ratings, an extension of Steam Deck Verified for more devices

They should do something like ProtonDB. Why not? I've seen a lot of verified games with problems.

Google and The Linux Foundation team up for 'Supporters of Chromium-based Browsers'
11 Jan 2025 at 5:44 am UTC

@G000h
One of the main problems I see with Chromium-based browsers is Google leading the direction of the core programming. Recently, Google turned off Manifest version 2 Browser Extension Support inside Chromium/Chrome, and implemented their Manifest version 3 instead. With Manifest version 2, tracker and advert blocking extensions such as uBlock Origin, Ghostery, PrivacyBadger could work properly and block trackers and adverts. Now that Manifest version 3 is in place, these extensions are practically useless and all the adverts and tracking goes through unimpeded. So long personal privacy!

There are 'solutions' to this Manifest version 3 problem...

Use a Firefox or Firefox-based browser such as LibreWolf, WaterFox, Floorp, Mullvad browser. Use Brave browser which implements some tracker-blocking capabilities as part of the browser (rather than as an extension).

Also using DNS tracker blocking, e.g. NextDNS, Quad-9, Pi-Hole, AdGuard Home (e.g. running on a Raspberry Pi).
You have to remember that Firefox will also implement the Manifest V3 in the future.

I'm with @tuubi ... we all are here because we love and support and use an os that has a tiny market share. So how is firefox any different? I personally love and support and use firefox all day every day.

I REALLY wish this linux foundation would put their resources towards the mozilla foundation, but oh well. Mozilla has been doing some not so great things lately, but I feel like if they had more resources they wouldn't? I don't know.

I just don't want firefox to go away is all.
Well, Linux isn't a niche market for decades now. It has more than 60% of market on servers and if you consider smartphones as well it is the most used (Android).

EA / Respawn now block Apex Legends from running on Linux and Steam Deck

Quoting: jensI think in the long term global matchmaking should be restricted to fully closed systems like consoles and cloud gaming.

PC gaming (Windows and Linux) should only support local multiplayer (separate servers like back in the days or something like friends groups only) where cheating is “banned” by social controls because players knows each other and thus no anti cheat software is needed.
Anti-cheat software is very problematic on Windows. I had to install FC25 on a Windows machine, no fun. Also Windows users don’t deserve this..
The future will be server-side AC and closed OSs, like consoles.

EA / Respawn now block Apex Legends from running on Linux and Steam Deck

Quoting: Talon1024This article serves as a good reminder of a significant reason to avoid multiplayer games.

Still, stuff like this is only going to hurt Linux in the end. Imagine someone wants to switch away from Windows; then they hear they can't use Photoshop Affinity Photo; and they can't play games like League of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, Apex Legends, Valorant, etc.

If we're lucky, Linux users will still be able to play these games via cloud gaming services like GeForce NOW, even if using such services requires a sizable sacrifice in terms of control and privacy.
If you want Linux to be relevant in gaming one day, these are exactly the games that it needs. Multiplayer games are far (I mean, FAR) more popular than any other games combined. It seems that 2023 was the last great year of Linux, unless some server side anti-cheat appears in a few decades.

Valve attempts to deal with jokes, memes and ASCII art reviews on Steam

Quoting: a0kamiI'm way more frustrated by troll/shitpost steam guides than reviews tbh, might have grown too old for the internet already
Those are kinda hidden. The reviews on the other hand show right away when you go to a store page, which was unprofessional from a Valve perspective.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyWhat?! Why would they want that? SteamOS isn't designed to be a general-use PC operating system. Using it that way would require quite a bit of tinkering. If you want an "out of the box" experience on PC, use Mint.
Of course it is. It has everything that 90% of people needs and want on a gaming focused scenario. It is a out of the box experience...
... on Steam Deck.
Yes. And people that are asking for the SteamOS for PC want the same experience on... PC. Valve themselves said that.
This is way, way harder to do for a lot of different PCs. Well, I guess this expectation is the reason for them not to release.
Yep. Too much hardware variety. If they want one day launch a SteamOS for PC like they promised, they have to work with both Nvidia and AMD, because waiting for official drivers is gonna take a long time.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleThese "issues that plague SteamOS" are not issues at all, they're such by design to provide a stable OS for use on appliance-like hardware.
Well, I suppose if you want to both own a Steam Deck and be a tinkerer, they become issues. One use-case's feature is another use-case's bug.
"Tinkerers" are a niche in OSs, that's why Mac and Windows are dominant. Linux will only be popular if everything works out of the box without tinkering, and people that want that will have it in niche external and small distros.
So, did you notice that you're commenting on an article about an external small distro people can use instead of the everything-works-out-of-the-box SteamOS? I'm not sure what your point is here.
And? Most people that use Bazzite want it due to Valve not yet releasing SteamOS for PCs. SteamOS at its core it is a out of the box experience.
