EVERSPACE 2 developer gets a 1.65 million Euro grant from the German federal parliament

I wouldn't mind playing it through Proton, but as I backed a tier that promised to give a key for the final game, I simply can't do that as I didn't receive the key yet.
Yes, there can be all sorts of arguments about what it means to back a kickstarter and so on, but they clearly prioritized acquiring new customers over delivering the product to customers that already paid for it. This might make sense from a business perspective, but it is a really bad practise and I will not support them again in the future because of that.

Quoting: ShmerlSo you bought it a second time? Or you paid extra for the questionable honour of being an alpha tester?Quoting: JuliusHow about finally releasing the game? I am an original Kickstarter funder and still haven't played any of it as they keep milking the early access BS and add various gimmicks that normally would be in post release patches I think.I backed it too, and decided not to wait and just play the current version in Wine. It works OK and the main campaign is interesting enough. The story is not complete though, so keep that in mind.

Maybe worth mentioning that it works in Proton and if you want to play with friends on Windows you have to install the Windows version with Proton.

I am mainly annoyed that they keep postponing the official release date, while pushing out updates that are clearly not essential parts of the the game and are meant to attract new customers as one would expect from post release updates.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyDo you know if the game is still "unfinished" in any playability sort of sense? How much does it matter what they call it? If it's more "finished" than many games given full release, is it a problem that they prefer to call it "early access" still?I don't know, as I am still waiting for my key from the Kickstarter campaign 4 years ago. The reviews make it sound like it is pretty complete, but it has been in "early access" for 2.5 years now and it looks like it will be finally released sometimes Q1 2023 if I am lucky.

If anything this is a typical case of what not to do if you care about releasing a finished game.

Quoting: peta77Well... difficult one... when is it finished? ... is a multimedia system / radio essential to a car? On the other hand, would you buy one without or one where you get it 2 years afterwards? But that is exactly what they did by releasing it under early access and treating it like a normal release, with typical post release additions and all that. The only ones that get shafted here are the original backers that paid the full price for the final release version that gets postponed all the time while they add DLC like features and do sales promotions to attract additional new customers.
So a complete product is not one that only gets the basics right.. And I love to see that there's people / companies out there that still care for that and don't do a release that's rather some kind of public beta.

Quoting: pbWow, first time I heard of this, but it's not too surprising, since I pretty much stopped following open source game releases after the demise of happypenguin.org a.k.a. The Linux Game Tome. :sad:You might be interested following our open-source games planet then: https://planet.freegamedev.net/ [External Link]

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIt's odd . . . I tell myself I care about the gameplay, not the graphics. And I sure enjoyed the heck out of Civ II back in the day, and its graphics were pretty basic. Master of Orion I, too.You might like https://www.remnantsoftheprecursors.com/ [External Link] then. Pretty graphics for an open-source game, but old school MOO gameplay.
But when I tried for instance Free Orion, I found its major lack of pretty made the experience so abstract that I kind of lost immersion--I didn't have this mental/emotional feel for either my bunch or the alien bunches, so instead of playing a faction I just felt like I was moving symbols around a screen, kind of. So I wonder if I've gotten too used to Civ V eye candy to enjoy going back to a more rudimentary look.

Quoting: peta77Sure, but the latest additions seem to be stuff you can do after finishing the game, which you know... is not essential to playing a finished game.Quoting: JuliusHow about finally releasing the game? Intel using DXVK (part of Steam Proton) for their Windows Arc GPU DX 9 drivers

Quoting: ShmerlHigher ups with little technical understanding not informed well about it and engineers don't want it to be seen as "just used a library" by them, seems likely.Quoting: Liam DaweThey include the license as-is, so it's perfectly legal to use the DXVK code like they are AFAIK.At least release notes mention DXVK developers.
But I wonder what's their motivation for such obfuscation in the code in the first place. It's going some extra length for sure.

Really a shame that there aren't more Alyx mods or games re-using the engine / game-play mechanics as it is really among the very best VR games out there.
