The HDMI Forum rejected AMD's open source HDMI 2.1 implementation

Quoting: F.UltraAFAIK their closed drivers supports HDMI2.1
They don't, you can see my post above about it. They can't since even their proprietary drivers are based on the open AMDGPU in the kernel.

Quoting: maddovrAre you sure you're getting 10-bit and 4:4:4 subsampling?
I don't have the card. I just checked under WAYLAND when I did and the display information app which I've forgotten the name of, said 10-bit colorspace!
Check your output information and paste them to see if there is any subsampling going on or not, it varies between compositors so I can't provide any command unless I know what yours is, but this is still very strange.

Quoting: Marlockwhat happens if i get an amd gpu that supports hdmi 2.1, an hdmi 2.1 cable, and an hdmi 2.1 monitor and plug them together, then boot up linux?

"no signal"? black screen? or does this setup fallback to an hdmi 2.0 featureset and i'm just limited some feature or another?

what does hdmi 2.1 do that hdmi 2.0 doesn't?
The higher bandwidth (18 vs 48Gbps), VRR (hdmi2.0 doesn't support ver, tho Nvidia and and have working code on windows to somehow support it in a hacky way, only for windows though) and DSC for going beyond the supposed limit of the bandwidth. If you use hdmi2.1 without the proper driver you'll be limited to sorta hdmi2.0 feature set.

Quoting: Marlockwhat does hdmi 2.1 do that hdmi 2.0 doesn't?
For the most part HDMI2.1 is 48Gbps bandwidth so can support higher hz with HDR and all that.

However HDMI2.0 with DSC can hit 4k 120hz 10bit just fine I believe.

When I had my 7900XTX, wayland was happy setting 4k 120hz and according to display data it was 10bit, so maybe also work with HDR?
This is very strange, DSC was implemented as part of the HDMI 2.1 spec, and the only way to get to 4k@120Hz with HDMI 2.0 is through 8-bit bit and subsampling to 4:2:0, instead of the full 4:4:4. Are you sure you're getting 10-bit and 4:4:4 subsampling?

Quoting: F.UltraSave your money, you have no legal standing and your case would be thrown out of court.
There could possibly be a case against AMD however. I'm not in the legal field of studies, but AMD is advertising HDMI 2.1 on their RX 6000 and 7000 cards even on linux when that is not the case. So maybe...

Quoting: alka.setzerI think, and may be wrong, that this only applies to the open source AMD stack, the closed source driver may not be subject to this limitation.
It does, unfortunately. Both mesa (gpu open drivers including amd's) and AMDGPU-PRO (amd's proprietary drivers) rely on the open source AMDGPU (part of the linux kernel), and this implementation was part of the kernel driver (and can't be anywhere but the kernel). So the HDMI forum rejecting this basically closed off hdmi 2.1 on amd for at least the existing gpus. It may yet be possible for next gpus to support hdmi 2.1 on linux by relying on a firmware level driver (like nvidia does) or on an internal chip that converts displayport signal to hdmi signal (like intel does).

Steam Deck SteamOS 3.5.16 Preview improves Persona 3 Reload performance

Quoting: PhlebiacReviews are overwhelmingly positive, so clearly the game has something going for it. But I just can't tell what based on the screenshots and video; it looks like a visual novel crossed with Final Fantasy style combat (hence the JRPG part, I guess).

Anyone who played it that can speak to the wide appeal?
It's difficult to compare persona to anything else. It blends a turn-based jrpg, with pretty normal mechanics (not much dissimilar to how pokémon works, except you can fuse Persona together to get completely different ones) and a graphical adventure where you actually NEED to cultivate relationships with other characters (called social links), which in turn are able to boost your abilities and grant your persona a few bonuses (and also several fusions require you to reach a certain (usually max) rank with a social link to unlock). All of this is combined with dungeon exploration experience which is very tasteful. And that's just the game, I left the best for last: the story. The story is phenomenal for each persona game (except, arguably, the first) and the characters, especially those with social links, feel alive (as they're living their story while the plot advances). This one isn't the great masterpiece Persona 5 Royal was, but then again this is a remaster of a game that is nearly two decades old. I highly recommend all the saga, you can play whichever you want first, as the stories are not connected to each other, be warned however that they're very long titles even if you play just the main story, and they all have multiple endings (p3r is 80 or so hours long, p4g is around 100, p5r 120 or so).
