We have dedicated ourselves to bringing this remaster to as wide an audience as possible
It's not as wide an audience as possible if the game's exclusive to one store. Particularly if the store you've chosen is a small one.
Exclusive to one Store where you can buy it and then have it forever without any attachment to that store. That's as wide as it gets. Nobody is stopping anybody from just buying it on GOG.

Now if I remember correctly that was never different, even during times when you physically bought games: According to the ToS you always only bought a license, never the game itself.

Realistically of course you had the disc and you could do whatever you wanted to do with it.

It's kinda the same how GOG operates. You only buy a license. But as the installer is not checking your account or anything, you can do what you want with the games once you saved them somewhere, which you should.

Worth mentioning that you can get a steam key of the game by simply donating 20 bucks to a wildlife charity and sending proof to the dev. There's also a completely free version with only ASCII graphics and no sound available. Despite these two things it's the full version of the game.
