Space combat game 'ASTROKILL' has been patched with improved Linux support

Bought it! Nice game.
It also runs quite nice with my Intel Iris Pro 5200 iGPU (low settings) and Mesa 17.2.0.
Seems like Ureal Engine 4 is getting ready for Linux.

Ryan "Icculus" Gordon is looking for new games to port to Linux, pay not required

Something off topic but interesting...

Icculus did ports for Activition and EA. Read here > Icculus homepage [External Link].
Some Call of Duty series "Server" and Medal of Honor series "Server" for Linux. But he was not contracted to do the Client ports.

No wonder! Windows would not be able to work out the load compared to Linux:D
As always... Linux makes the job but is not allowed/worth it to play:(

Quoting: seamooseThis is exactly what what he/we should be looking out for! Folks who are requesting ports of modern AAA games apparently don't understand the amount of coding effort *and* QA *and* ongoing support required to do this. Some games maybe slightly easier (for example, if they use Unreal 4) but there's also numerous middleware and so on to deal with. Even worse for older AAA games that pretty much everyone has already played under Windows or Wine so not many people would buy if they were ported to Linux. Porting recent and popular smaller or indie titles are the ideal vehicle for increasing the Linux game count with "worthy" (or at least popular) games. It's much better to end up with four smaller ports in a year than one big one - more bang for the buck!

I'll be supporting Ryan on Patreon. I see that his monthly support has already gone up from ~$750 to $950 and rising!
You did absolutely hit the point!!!

I would like to see "Banished" (Shining Rock Software) finished for Linux.
When I'm not totally wrong it's the work from a single developer, who never did a OpenGL port before.
He could need some help from Icculus for sure.

Especially small teams which don't have the manpower/resources to make a linux port come to my mind.
Maybe Liam could help here out with a kind of list.
He contacted so much developers to ask for a port but they sometimes refused because of the lack of manpower or OpenGL knowledge.

Legends of Grimrock 2 for example is one of that.

Quoting: GuestIn the bigger picture, I don't believe Gabe Newell is doing what he's doing out of love for Linux or gamers. If that was so, he'd have put in all these resources years ago. He's doing it because Windows is closing things down and he's worried about his/Steam's future being shaky. All comes down to business and money, including metadata selling, glossed over as 'free/sale/easy quick updates' etc. Linux has always been about freedom, privacy, choice, no drm, foss. He most likely wants to expand the drm/closed client/metadata-mining further across Linux, so his business/income continues, regarding games anyway.
Gabe Newell is in the first place a bussiness man. Ignoring the fact what MS is doing/trying with their own Windows Games Store would show that he is a bad one.
He has to eat, drink and is responsible for all his employers and their families.
I did not oversee the fact that all features in Steam for Linux are always done at last (VR for example) - but they get done.
When selling numbers for Linux games grow, we will get more attention, become more important in the games industry and of cource Steam too.
I don't think Valve is pushing "drm/closed client/metadata-mining". Some people here also mentioned that some games have no DRM and can be started without Steam client - this is true.
It's the publishers decision to use Steams DRM not Valve.
Especially big games/publishers WANT DRM to protect their games from piracy and thats why Steam has buildin DRM to be able to make business with these big publishers.
Here is where the most money comes - new AAA titles you can buy for 50 and more Euros.

Quoting: Avehicle7887One can setup DosBox himself yes but keep in mind that not everyone has the same computer skills, using Linux doesn't automatically make a person a geek
Setting up DosBox is much easier then setting up Wine - it explains itself.
You could also use ScummVM for most DOS-Adventures.

DRM-Free - you said that is not important for you. Again this is just you.
Nothing to answer back here. Simply my position.

You talk so highly about Valve did this, Gabe did that, I'll give credit where its due and yes I fully agree that without Valve Linux gaming wouldn't be the way it is now (although I cannot forget to mention that it was Humble Bundle which pushed Linux at first), but there's one thing you didn't mention - Valve has a much deeper pocket than GOG which means they can afford some ventures, whereas GOG might be a little more restricted.
I could also mention Linus Torvalds. Without him we would not have Linux at all.
Also Bill Gates. I don't like Windows, but he was the one who brought the PC in our homes and has my full respect for fighting cancer nowadays.
And no, it was not Humble Bundle. It was LGP (Linux Game Publishing), Icculus, TTimo, ...
Valve have more manpower/possibilities than GOG - right. But announcing something and simply never speak about it again has nothing to do with a deeper pocket.
A simple "sorry guys we cannot fullfill it" at the right time (not after years) would have shown that they are still serious and did a mistake.

Nowadays however I have much less credibility, almost everything they stood for has been crumbled. The only thing that keeps me there is the DRM-Free, otherwise they would end up the same way Humble Bundle ended for me.
berillions said they are liars - seems he is not completely wrong. He only used the wrong words because he is desperately disappointed like many.

I've heard it many times from Windows users asking me "but is there GTA V, BF4/1 or Overwatch?" and they would stick to Windows the second I say no.
Some day they all will run in Wine flawlessly out of the box.
Vulkan will hopefully win the race and newer games will arrive natively.
We must simply be patient and keep on showing our need for linux games.

GOG Galaxy not releasing for Linux - OK for me.
I did never buy any single game from them or any other store - but Steam/Valve.

Why? This is an easy answer.
No other company (beside Feral, some others) really cares/pushes linux gaming. Selling "only" games means nothing.
Also putting DOSBox infront of "old but great" DOS games does not count for me - I can do this myself.

I also don't care if a game is DRMfree or not - this is not important.

Important for me is that I give my money to people that deserve it... to people that really care about Linux, to people that believe in Linux, to people that spend their money to improve Linux, to people who hire other linux people... to people like VALVE.

We should be thankfull and happy that Gabe Newell took this risky step to push linux gaming, convinced and motivated so much other people to put their affords into linux and don't be sad because GOG galaxy does not come to linux.
We all owe so much to this guy and his team.

To be honest... for me this news is positive. I hope some of you will now buy more games on Steam and support the people that deserve it.
This will raise selling numbers for Linux games on Steam and then we will get 5% market share much faster like when everybody buys here and there.
Only then we linux gamers will get the attention WE DESERVE.
And only then competition in selling linux games gets neccessary!!!

Think about it.

Steam now has over 3,500 games for Linux, with GOG having over 700

Quoting: Mountain ManEven 5-years ago, I honestly never thought we'd see this day and was prepared to content myself with dual-booting and the occasional indie release for Linux.

But even as successful as Linux gaming has been, I'm still somewhat concerned about our minuscule presence and a little afraid, perhaps irrationally, that it could all just suddenly go away.
I'm really happy that Valve are pushing Linux gaming...
Hired LunarG...
Introduced Steam machines...
Raised the need for Vulkan...
Now hiring developers to improve mesa...
...

I think the next step should be to release a "Steam/Linux only" AAA game... Halflife 3 for example.
There are always exclusive titles released for a special platform ported/released later to other platforms.
Hey Valve... how about making a deal with Nintendo and release their games on a buildin dolphin/mupen64 emu inside SteamOS!?
Also think about other emus for Playstation, C64, neogeo..
This would of course raise a huge shitstorm against Valve but it would also bring Valve and linux gaming into the news... lots of people still don't know what Linux is and that you can have it for FREE and also install it BESIDE windows.

All gaming magazines would report about it - maybe also TV.
Windows gamers would give SteamOS a try and maybe would realise how easy and stable Linux is... No more hassle with drivers, etc. Everything is ALREADY installed!!!

This is of course only an idea.

Few things. I find exclusivity approach bad. Put yourself in that situation, and say you like when you are excluded. I.e. for instance when you as Linux user are ignored by Windows only release. Show me one person who thinks that exclusivity is something positive. Surprising thing is, Linux users should probably know this topic in and out already.

Second, I already told Feral about it, so I'm sure they know.
I totally understand you.

But for me GOG and the other stores are no option for me.
Let me explain...
I'm a Linux networkadmin and care alot about security... also private.
I don't do facebook, twitter, ebay, paypal, buy online with creditcard, use smartphones,...
You can find me at different bug-trackers of different opensource projects where I send patches or report bugs - "mesa" for example.

BUT STEAM/VALVE sell gift cards at my gas station - thats why I prefer Steam most.
Steam has enough money/manpower to do this.

So you see... different people/porters have different interests/goals.

Quoting: LeopardNext time , i will to the Feral ' Hey , yo Feral! Shmerl wants you games on GOG , because he is Polish and he has somekind of fanatizm, patriotizm about GOG so he somehow wants you to break main developers or publishers attitude. Don't mind if he is talking about other Drm-free stores ; he only cares about GOG'

Dude , enough of that your GOG loving movements. No matter what we approach you ; you're still trying to blame Feral and somehow Valve itself. Drop it off.

If you are not happy about it ; tell your beloved GOG to care about Linux by porting their titles and Galaxy , not treating us as second class citizens. Maybe after that ; our rising Linux porter Feral can consider that.
Hey Leopard,
Shmerl has an opinion and that is justified.
Please don't blame others for their thoughts/interests - this is really childish - and does not help.
