Quoting: maodzedunThe only advantage of these Steam Machines is the size and arguably the better case design. The prices however are too high. With smart shopping you can get a much better PC for 460 dollars. For the target audience the form factor is important. As is the fact that SteamOS is pre-installed and ready to go. They also come with a Steam Controller. And due the competition, prices will drop much faster than current crop of consoles.
Quoting: MetallinatusIndeed, investing up front is not something the general public likes to do.Quoting: IlyaSo although the initial prize may be higher, on the long run you're saving money with a Steam box. Plus you can play them on your computer, and on future generations of the "console".Try saying that to their target market who only looks at the price of the hardware....
Quoting: amonobeaxStrange It almost seems like they're not even trying to give it competitiveIt's just not possible to get prices as low as Sony and MS without (mass production & ) subsidising the hardware costs, which requires crippling the device to ensure it's used for gaming.

Best looking Steam Machine since Valves own prototype and in an even smaller form factor. Previous announcement from other manufactures had disappointing. But this is something I'd consider buying for family members.
Quoting: sarmadDoes anyone know what do they mean by "multimedia playback"? I don't find any multimedia playback features in Steam client. Does SteamOS offer more than what Steam client do?Still in the works I believe (your of course free to install Kodi and the like).
Quoting: http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/We’re working with many of the media services you know and love. Soon we will begin bringing them online, allowing you to access your favorite music and video with Steam and SteamOS.The music player [External Link] has already been released/integrated [External Link].

Quoting: PangachatI think it's two unique displays, and must compute two independent images for them. Are far as your video card knows it's a single display (hardware wise it mostly likely is too). Games just needs to render two views side by side and then apply a 2D distortion for the optics.
Quoting: Pangachatmodern "AAA" titles barely can maintain fixed 60 fps even in 1080p.On current gen consoles yes, but dedicated PC gaming hardware has long been running at higher resolutions and frame rates. Don't mistake terrible game optimization/ports for lack of available hardware performance.

It's also a narrower aspect ratio than I'd have expected.

Quoting: liamdaweHere’s a shot of the controller designThat's just a side view of the headset.
Quoting: liamdawe- Refresh rate of 90FPS (do they mean HZ?)Yes, they say 90Hz in the launch video.
Quoting: liamdawe- A nice resolution of 1200x1080 per eyeBut still on the low end — on the plus side current gen video card should be able to handle it. :)
It's also a narrower aspect ratio than I'd have expected.

Quoting: liamdaweI imagine there are some people who steered away for Oculus with the Facebook takeoverWhile I know this is true, I don't understand why? I don't use the Facebook the website (for obvious reasons) but I have not problem with the company. They've relased and contribute to a number of open source projects [External Link].
Quoting: Guesta similar article over at AnandTech pointed out that it doesn't state that any VR demo is open to the public. It may well be only open to publishers and developers. They've already shown off their tech to developers at the last Steam Dev Days [External Link]. But yes the announcement says the scheduled VR demos are for developer or publisher.
Strength Of The SWORD ULTIMATE, Fully Funded & Coming To Linux

Quoting: liamdaweThe game was originally on the Playstation 3 under the name "Strength of the SWORD3", and this looks like an expanded version of it for more platforms and with more content. I did find it odd their Kickstarter doesn't mention this, but it's not a major issue. At the top of the Kickstarter page it says they made Strength of the SWORD 3, going on the explain what it is and what they're adding quite clearly, I thought.
Quoting: Vonreminds me of amazing Blady Symphony which is probably never going to be released on linux. :<Why? It uses the Source engine and in past posts on the forum they had expressed interest in supporting Steam Machines [External Link].
